We first stayed at Enagron last year for a week and loved it so much that we returned there this year for the last four days of our two weeks trip around the island. This is just a perfect place to stay if you want to be surrounded by mountains and countryside away from the more typical places you usually find on the island.

Our room was fantastic - a light, airy, spacious and comfortable bedroom, and a very comfortable living space with the added bonus of being able to prepare food ourselves when we so wished. The balcony had a lovely view over the gorge and was perfect for sitting on in the evening playing backgammon as the sun set, and enjoying a glass of raki from the complimentary decanter provided with the room.

The food in the resturaunt was traditional Greek dishes - simple food but perfectly cooked. My partner absolutely loved the Apaki - a pork dish marinated in vinegar and smoked with herbs - we watched them smoking it in the outside oven chimney. I loved the aubergines with tomatoes and cheese which just melted in the mouth - absolutely divine.

The pool is fantastically set looking out over the gorge - where we were lucky enough to see nesting Cretan vultures - very rare - nesting in the opposite cliff face. It was a lovely relaxing place to soothe our aching legs in the water after doing the Samaria gorge walk the previous day.

The staff are fantastic, warm and friendly. Aphrodite who is in charge of the restaurant is a lovely person and made us feel very special - she remembered us from our previous visit last year and gave us complimentary wine on our first night - she is a very warm and generous hostess and we remember her with fondness.

All in all, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Far enough in the mountains of Crete to be away from it all, but certainly in drivable distance of towns and the coast when you want a change of scenery. A perfect holiday destination.

Room Tip: On our first stay we had a room with a mezzanine sleeping area, but there wasn't a huge amount o...

We stayed at Enagron for three nights in Aug 2012 with our toddler. The place is truly amazing: the accommodation is stunning, rustic and luxurious at the same time. The service is friendly and professional. The main building, lounge etc is big, tastefully decorated and very cosy. The pool is perfect (although the children's pool is too deep for toddlers + no steps etc). We went to see the goats and we had a go at milking them, which was utterly fantastic. Food: mix reviews: breakfast is fantastic (homemade, authentic, fresh fruit, bread etc). Lunch + dinner: aside from the most amazing greek salads and homemade breads we had (with their own olive oil), the a la carte menu wasn't impressive. Why not introduce a daily menu with a vegetarian option?
The meat (two separate pork dishes) was very dry and very tough, quite disappointing. The spinach and baked feta was absolutely delicious but we asked for a little pasta dish for our toddler (as on the menu)and it was plain spaggheti and grated cheese on top! ineddible, and she didn't touch it, despite the fact that she is a very good eater. The lamb with seasonal veg came without veg as they didn't find veg (in August??), just fried potatoes. The lamb was very soft and ok, but tasted very "goaty", it must have been hogget or mutton as it was very strong (a little too strong in fact, although we like mutton). Overall, we had a great experience, though and would definetely come back, without a doubt. I just wanted to write a very honest review.

We stayed at Enagron Farm for 3 nights. It was superb, excellent food and lovely professional lady in charge (lots of herbs and vegetables from the property). We also discovered the area on foot with a donkey and a poney to carry the children, it worked out perfectly. The staff was kind and helpful. It is a quiet genuine destination away from the mass and luxurious destinations on the North clear of Crete.

We spent three nigths in Enagron and the beginning of our stay in Crete and find it very pleasant. The location is great, nice swimming pool , outdoor games for children, and also we found that people were very nice. Mary is very welcoming, and makes the stay vvery pelasant, some activities are organized every day. We did some excursion with donkeys (great for children that can go on the donkey).
The other positiv point is that the food is very good, only products from their garden, fresh and bio. You can also assist to cooking lesson (moussaka , hum!!!)

We stayed at Enagron with my family for over a week. The cottages are gorgeous with real atmosphere. The food was divine and the cooking class lots of fun. The location is great if you are into hiking. Mary and Fanny have made the stay even better with their superb tips and the complimentary raki,
You must go!

We stayed three nights in these cottages last July. The surroundings are beautiful, nice walks if you go early morning or late afternoon when less hot.The accommodation was good but in our cottage the bed was under the roof (mezanine) and the air conditioning was not working properly to make it cool enough to sleep comfortably. Sitting on the balcony watching birds of prey hovering over the valley and cliffs was magic. The silence is very nice as are the sounds of nature(rodents?). It is quite remote so you have to love that to enjoy staying there. When we were there there was not much activity going on such as lessons etc... which was a pity. We also felt a bit sorry for the horses in the animal paddock which was a bit sparse in the heat of summer.( it resembled more a building plot than a paddock). There is a small pool but it is quickly too crowded .Very friendly and helpful staff.

We stayed 3 days in Enagron in early April'12 when most of Crete was still preparing for the season. We loved our stay in Enagron. It is clean (rooms, sheets, etc. were spotless), quiet (in the outskirts of a mountain), distinctive (agro-tourism, village life, farm, donkeys, ponies, turkeys, etc.), geniuine (true Cretan hospitality as demonstrated by Mary - more on Mary later) and with excellent food.

Even though it was virtually empty (only 2-3 rooms with guests), we never felt disadvantaged. Breakfasts were local and special. In the morning lunch and dinner in the morning and food was custom made for us. And amazingly tasty and fresh food it was with huge portions. Cretan food is excellent if you like Med food.

We borrowed one of the donkeys and toured the vicinity for 3 hours. Our girls (3.5 and 9) loved it. We also toured the area by car in light of Mary's recommendations.

Now about Mary; Enagron is a great facility but equally important is the difference Mary makes on top. She is one of the most friendly and geniune people I have ever met in the hospitality business. We felt like we were her personal guests rather than staying at a hotel. Our kids still talk about how friendly Mary was. There was also a Cretan food course that our daughter happily joined (we slept after over-tiring ourselves during the donkey ride). They cooked mousakka and we happily ate it in the evening around the stove in the main dining room. At night, Mary gave us firewood for the fireplace and we had fun around the fire.

This was the first time we did something different than a Club Med type holiday with kids and they simply loved it. We would love to go back again some day. And we strongly recommend it for people who want to try something different, experiencing true Crete.
