Myself and my 20 year old son and 17 year old daughter have just returned from a lovely one week holiday (17th to 23rd July 2014) at the Alykanas Beach Hotel on the Island of Zakynthos. This is a self catering hotel and all the rooms are off passageways that are open to outside at both ends so there is a lovely breeze and all the room doors are like front doors to a house. For the Brits Thomas Cook have a monopoly on it but do not confuse it with the next door hotel which is Thomsons and is called the Alykanas Village. The main difference between the two is that the Alykanas Village has a kids' club and daytime activities and three are 3 large pools for these water activities, whereas the Alykanas Beach is a little quieter and only has evening entertainment and one large pool, but you can always nip next door, as we did, to play volleyball and water polo. The evening entertainment is mostly karaoke, which can be funny depending who has a go but there is also Elvis and Greek dancing which weren't bad, although the bbq on the greek night was not very good, very little meat. All 3 courses were already plated up (it was not serve yourself) and put in front of you and the presentation was very messy. The best thing about the Alykanas Beach is it is right on the beach with beautiful clear waters that stay shallow for a long way out with sand banks, so very suitable for young children. The beach itself has been eroded and is quite a narrow strip but the hotel has grass right up to the beach so you can have a sunbed and parasol free of charge and it is only 4 steps down to the sand. A little further up the beach is wider but you have to pay 7 euros for 2 beds and a parasol. The hotel is absolutely spotless and the air conditioning is excellent, it is remote controlled and very quiet but you have to pay 45 euros a week. This is well worth it because otherwise you have to leave the balcony doors open and you will be bitten by mosquitoes. The balconies are large with a table and two chairs and a washing line although no pegs, which you need because it is windy. The breeze usually starts in the afternoon and is lovely, it is idyllic to sit on the edge of the grass looking out across the sea to Kefalonia, sipping a cocktail and watching the sun go down. The hotel also has two eating areas right by the beach so you can sit in the shade if you prefer and eat your meal with the beautiful view. The food available at the hotel is okay and only slightly more expensive than elsewhere, although we only ate there once. The self catering facilities are very basic, two electric rings, a kettle and a toaster. This was fine for us as we only prepared breakfast and lunch there but ate out every evening. The rooms are large and there is plenty of room for three but the bathroom is tiny. There is no bath just a shower tray and a hand held shower that you can hang up. The shower is surprisingly powerful and is only surrounded by a shower curtain that sticks to you and does not stop the bathroom becoming flooded. We used our towels to mop up all the water every day but the hotel only supplies a change of towels twice a week so we had to ask for new ones but this didn't seem to be a problem. I feel the hotel would save a lot of money in washing towels and refurbishing bathrooms if they invested in shower doors. The shower is why I did not give this hotel five stars. The staff are very helpful and friendly and all the shops and tavernas in Alykanas are staffed with Greek people which is great. We recommend the Lemon Tree restaurant and have the catch of the day - fantastic. The Apollon is great for a laugh the staff are very entertaining and remembered my son and daughter's names and said hi to us every evening and had a chat whenever they saw us. Also the Paradosiako you have to book as it gets very busy and Vrisaki which the Geeks themselves like. Generally the restaurants all serve the same things beef or lamb stew (Stifado or Kleftiko) with salad and roast potatoes, chips or rice or the catch of the day, or steaks, or moussaka or pasta. My children did not like the pastas because they put cinnamon in them but we enjoyed everything else. For a main course, dessert and a glass of wine it will cost approx. 15 euros. Tipping is not expected as it is often included or it is in the cover charge with the bread and butter but it is up to you of course. If you want an even cheaper evening out you can have a gyro or kebab and cross the road to the ice cream parlour which has lots of delicious flavours. Would recommend the shipwreck tour and the turtle tour but choose the local tour company just up the road from the hotel on the right hand side if you want to support the local economy, most of them are English ladies married to a Greek and lovely people who know everything about the island. Also my children get sea sick but the local tour crossed the island by coach and then put us on the boat for the shipwreck so you are not on it for too long otherwise it is a full day on the boat with Thomas Cook. Unfortunately we could not get off onto the beach because the water was too choppy but it was still stunning. I am ex airline and thus well travelled and I have never seen water this colour, it looked as if it had been painted absolutely beautiful. The same for the turtle trip we went by coach to Laganas and then got on the boat, saw lots of turtles even though other boats made so much noise that they were afraid to come to the surface but our boat hung around until most of the other boats had gone and we then saw loads. All in all we had a great week, Alykanas and Alykes (next village) are lovely resorts.

Room Tip: Ask for sea and mountain view then you won't be too near the bar which might go on until 2am but...

We stayed here 17th - 24th July with our 16 year old daughter. We had a studio which was very spacious, a kingsize bed and single sofa bed, both were really comfortable.Kitchen area was basic but served us well for what we needed. We had with the most stunning inland and sea view from the spacious balcony, which I had requested directly with the hotel, considering we only booked 1 week before, they managed to accommodate us with this stunning view, room 356 to be precise! The pool area and bar were brilliant, as were the staff, who were all really friendly and welcoming. Food was really good, we tended to eat there at lunchtime under the shaded area looking out to sea, what more could you ask for! Proximity to the beach was second to none......you couldn't actually get any closer, truly amazing.
The town was nice with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. Alykes, about a 10 minute walk away is maybe a little nicer but that's my opinion, again, lots of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Negative points.......not really negative but need mentioning.

Bathrooms and kitchen areas could do with updating but work well and as they should do.

Sunbeds as every holiday destination are always an issue, people put towels down and do not return for hours....annoying as always!!!

I would recommend this place without a doubt. In fact, we are already planning to return, which is a first for us....Wish we were still there now!!

Stayed at the alikanas beach hotel in May 2014 . Second time there and it certainly did not let itself down . Hotel staff were very friendly and polite and the room was cleaned daily . Large swimming pool and loads of sun beds and the beach right at the poolside. No noise at night , slept like a log and already booked for two weeks next year . Can't wait to return and have lovely food in the local restaurants .

We have just returned home from 2 fabulous weeks at the Abh. As a family party of 11 we had 3 x 2bed apartments. These were huge, each bedroom having its own balcony . The only negative being that the bathrooms could do with updating aa they are a little dingy. The hotel is situated perfectly, right on the beach which is shallow and warm. Would not think twice about returning to the alykanas beach hotel. Infact we all wish we were still there.

Great location, but is let down by a lack of sun beds with not a single spare bed available after 8:45 in the morning during the peak weeks we stopped, which considering they have the space is very poor. Other than that critical point the hotel is good.

Alykanas Beach Hotel is where families go to not only have a great holiday with their children, they are there making memories for then.

The staff are always very friendly and welcome to see you. It is clean and well kept. The cleaners work hard to keep every thing ship shape. it is the one place you will want to come back to.

Room Tip: rooms on the same side of the reception area are quite and cooler in the evening
