Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso

Reviewed 25 August 2014

On arrival we were impressed but soon came back down to earth when shown to our room. Rooms were very basic and not very comfy at all, sheets were always covered in sand even when we hadn't been to the beech!
This was the first year that Thompson have travelled here on an all inclusive basis. We travel at least 3-4 times a year with Thompson and this is by far the worst interpretation of 'all-inclusive' we have ever had. We were made to feel like second class citizens to the paying guests.
Although the food in the buffet restaurant was good most of the time there was a number of times when we had pork and turkey that was raw. We spoke to other guest who also disappointed in the food and hygiene standards. The staff in the buffet restaurant were very helpful.
The pool bar menu had a list of 4 baguettes which were for 'all inclusive' and loads of others but you had to pay for these. The rep Julie knew little about the hotel or the 'all inclusive' she actually commented "well how many baguettes do you need" to which a reply came surely all inclusive means you can choose from anything on the menu. The sea dunes restaurant was fantastic and well worth the visit, this also had a different menu for paying guests!!
The entertainment was a tad boring and repeated on a weekly basis so in the second week there was nothing to do in the evening.
The entertainment staff did little to entertain the teenagers so if your thinking of taking 13-17year olds take a friend to keep them company as there is nothing for them to do in the evenings at all and day time entertainment is 'as and when they can be bothered'.
Maybe in a few years this hotel will be ready for the all inclusive standard we are used to from Thompson but as it stands if it wasn't for the location and the weather i think we would of come home early.

Dear Laura E

Even though the Grecotel group of hotels has worked with Thomson for 30 years, this is the first year that we have welcomed Thomson guests to our hotel and it appears that we need to improve the description of our “Premium Plus” inclusive package in the tour operator descriptions. We offer the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso with different board options mostly Half Board and “Premium Plus”, but not as an “all-inclusive” hotel. The Premium Plus option includes breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a range of exclusive food and drinks at the restaurants and bars and it is not an ‘ultra-all inclusive’ resort where all items are included. As a 5 star hotel bookable with different board options we have to offer also additional and more exclusive food & drinks options that as you can understand cannot be included at the Premium Plus package.
Please rest assured that the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso has been certified with the World Health Organisation’s HACCP Codex Alimentarus for Food Safety Management Systems from the reception of food onto the premises to the service to our guests.
The neighboring Grecotel Olympia Oasis is an all-inclusive resort where all food & drinks are included plus sports.
We’re sorry that you felt that there were no activities for your children as from mid-June to mid-September we offer the GrecoTeens program including Discovery Adventures, sports, water sports, evening get-togethers. Knowing that this age group does not like being ‘organised’, they meet the teen coordinator every day and plan their own activities.
As the Grecotel group has 20 delightful hotels around Greece, I’d be delighted to suggest a suitable destination for your next holiday so that we can show you the standards of warm Greek hospitality and high standards for which we have become known.

Recommend to everyone! Nice hotel with an amazing service in one amazing beach. Everyone is very attentive and caring to whatever you need. The food is delicious and is located direct on the beach. Plenty activities for my kids and a huge SPA! So go ahead and you won't regret it! )

We had a very nice and relaxing holiday again. It is our 3rd visit to the Olympia Riviera and mostly we enjoyed the beautiful sunset overlooking the sea between the islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia at the balcony of the Lobby Bar, simply amazing. The sandy beach is maybe one of the best in Greece and perfect if you like to walk long distances. We had a room in the main building, which are nice and clean, main colors blue and white with a beautiful sea view, almost from every corner of the hotel you can see the sea. The staff is very friendly and helpful, whenever we asked for something we got immediate attention. The food is excellent, tip: try the a la carte dinner at the Sea Dunes Restaurant and the show cooking in the center of the main restaurant. We will visit this hotel definitely again next summer.

I just returned from this wonderful hotel that we spend a few days with my family. All i can say is that it was one of the best holidays in my life! The location of the hotel is brilliant and it is right on the beach. The staff were all very friendly and they catered for all of our needs with a smile. The food in the hotel was really good and i really enjoyed it . The evening buffet is just amaizing. We spent most of our time on this ideal beach for children. My kids enjoyed the water slides and the children program that they have in their 2 mini clubs.I would diffidently recommend this Hotel! You will love it and for sure you are going to relax. Keep up the good work.

I am a 5* traveler 10 years now. I stayed in this hotel a few years ago and I really enjoyed it.

Unfortunately this year my decision to stay here was a huge mistake.

First of all the hotel is in decline. Like it was never maintained the last few years! If you are searching for an elegant feeling, a luxury experience you will definitely NOT find it here.

Please excuse me if I sound overweening but the worst is that this hotel provided cheap touristic packages so the people visiting it were mostly from low class. This brought a crowd, everyone fighting to get the food from the buffet (there was no need for rush since it was plenty) and in general there was a cheap feeling around and in the same time the hotel trying to overcharge you everything extra to stabilize the loss from the cheap packages. You will feel likecattle ready for the butcher.

About the room:

Water in the bathroom would come one time extremely cold one time extremely hot. Faucet needed change.

View was not there since palm trees were.

Curtains, chairs, sheets and so on were dirty.

Table on the balcony was unstable due to bad maintenance. A minor non important issue you would say but not if wine would be all over the place due to this problem.

Bathrobes were extremely low quality (I wonder why NEF NEF provided this bad quality products with its brand on) and fibers would be all over your hair trying to remove them later.

You will NEVER find sun beds in the swimming pools since there were not enough. (ok they put a sign saying the opposite but sunbeds were not available constantly hahaha!)

I can keep going on and on but I believe you get the feeling.

In general:

Stuff were trying to be helpful. I can not say they did not try. Unfortunately by speaking Greek myself, I really did not like gossiping the visitors or answering like they are not a five star hotel. For example we wanted to book horse riding and the receptionist was screaming to another guy "eeeee can you book the horses", "ok we will do it". It just does not provide a 5* feeling.

I feel that its not stuff's problem but top management's lack on training them properly since they did have the appetite to serve but not the training or skills.

Rooms were not particularly clean. There was sand in the sheets and sheets were not changed everyday. You will have to ask the hotel to change them.

Really awful was that we bought a bottle of water and after cleaning the room it was stolen from the mini bar. I informed the receptionist (Katerina if I recall correctly), she was shocked and replaced as the bottle but is not about the bottle of water but about thinking you can not leave your stuff in the room after. Also the safe is not suitable for laptops so don't bring it with you there.

The food from the inclusive package was plenty and tasted really good. The price for a bottle of water was ridiculous. 1 liter for 3,60€. One 200ml cola for 3,30€.

Really good experience was the restaurant inside the hotel named Sea Dunes. Tastes were awesome and prices were reasonable. Congratulations to the Chef who came to ask us about our experience. Service was impeccable.

Spa was nice but overpriced. Nothing special.

Location of the hotel is good but there are a lot of hotels there (some from the same company group). Beach is awesome but it is the same beach with the rest of the hotels and for free if you wish as well. Nothing extra actually provided by the hotel besides the sun beds and umbrellas.

All in all I strongly propose you to avoid this hotel if you are looking for a luxury / 5* experience. Value for money is really bad and the hotel does not provide a good experience.

Room Tip: Try to take a room in a high floor if you want to have sea view.

Dear Traceratio

Firstly, may I start by thanking you for returning to the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso after your previous enjoyable stay.
We sincerely regret that this time you felt that we did not rise to the high standards set not only by our company, but more importantly by our guests. I have initiated an inquiry into all the matters you raised and thank you for bringing them to our attention.
All the staff undergo thorough training programs both at a local level and together with their colleagues from other Grecotels in Greece.
The Grecotel Olympia Riviera Resort comprises 3 seafront properties, the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso, the Mandola Rosa, Grecotel Exclusive Resort and the Grecotel Olympia Oasis. All of our guests have access to the 2km hotel area of the 10km sandy beach which has two Blue Flags. In addition to the sunbeds and umbrellas, we offer free beach towels, showers, toilets, and for guests at the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso and Mandola Rosa, Grecotel Exclusive Resort we provide beach service from the beach bar. I’d like to add that the ratio or sunbeds per guest is 2:1 and we try our best to administer this fairly and to dissuade some residents who ‘reserve’ beds at each pool and on the beach even when they are elsewhere.
As you so rightly say, the main restaurant buffet is plentiful and constantly refreshed. Despite our attempts to assure our guests that there is adequate food from the time the buffet opens to closing time, some who have not experienced a Grecotel before are worried they may miss something! Ilias, the Executive Chef, is delighted that you enjoyed your experience at the Sea Dunes restaurant.
We sincerely hope that you will give us the opportunity of proving that the luxury you seek still exists at the Grecotel Olympia Riviera Thalasso and I’d be delighted if you would contact me personally to make a reservation either with us or at any other Grecotel in Greece.

Just a week ago returned from a fortnight at this Hotel, and would give anything to go back! This really is a five star hotel- everything is served for you in glasses (including drinks by the pool), you can easily get a sunbed, your suitcases are delivered to your room for you and you are even greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine. Whether you prefer the pool or the beach, you can always get a sunbed by either (the sunbeds on the beach are free) ! The food is really nice, with a very wide selection, and the staff are extremely friendly and cannot do enough for you. The pools are lovely, my personal favourite was the infinity pool, where the nicest sunbeds are, and you can relax in peace and quiet! The worst thing for mw was the wifi, however this was not a big deal as you could always get it in the lobby. The area of Kyllini is really beautiful, and the beach is wonderful, especially for people with young kids as the sea is very shallow, even far out. Whilst staying, me and my family visited Olympia. This really is a worthwhile trip, however the thomson trip is ridiculously expensive. If this is something you are interested in doing, you are much better off hiring a car (you can do this through the hotel) - it is much cheaper, and allows you to take your time going around the ruins. The one thing I would say is if you are thinking of booking this hotel, make sure you go all inclusive. There are not many places near by the eat (The village is very small and there isn't really a lot there) and the hotel bars are very pricey. The all inclusive package is really worth it, I think it would've have cost us more if we had gone half board! Overall it is a fantastic hotel, and we are hoping to return soon! If you're undecided, I would definitely recommend you to book this hotel, you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Ask for one of rooms 1350-1359- These are on the ground floor and central to everything - the pools...

The management of this hotel commits a crime under the beautiful scenery and sunset of Kylini area. Although the service is relatively good; there is an atmosphere of overcharging among visitors. This is a big complex with three hotels of the same group next to each other. The prices are nothing like Greek cost of life and as a guest this feels sour even if you can afford it. Small mischieves constantly happened during our stay: The air-conditioning stopped working right on time for the closing time of the buffet lunch, we were overcharged wine delivered with room service and was corrected only after we asked the question and many other smaller ones. Plus the hotel website features a kids swimming pool with sliders but when you arrive you are told that those belong to the other hotel and not the one you booked. The hotel offers free wifi but only works at the reception!! The crime is clearly committed against such a beautiful and prospective area of Greece…

Room Tip: If you are booking a suite for more than 2 people, make sure you clarify how many rooms the suite is...

Dear Constantinos 22

For many years, it has been our aim to fulfill our guests’ holiday dreams and when we do not manage to do this, it saddens us yet it makes us try even harder to correct any imperfections.
In answer to your comments, please allow me to point out that the prices are according to 5* hotel standards and everywhere in the world, these differ from say supermarket or local bar prices. The availability of Wi-Fi is limited by our supplier and the infrastructure in this area of the Peloponnese. We are trying to upgrade this as demand is constantly increasing now that virtually all guests carry mobile equipment. Within the last few weeks, we managed to improve the network in speed and range.
May I reassure you that the water-slide pool is situated at the Grecotel Olympia Oasis of the resort and available to all guests as mentioned on our web pages.
We hope that you will give us a chance to show you our genuine concern and hospitality either when you re-visit us in Kyllini or at one of the other Grecotel Hotels & Resorts around Greece.
