We've just returned from a fortnight at the Aeolian Village and I was crying over our last delicious breakfast, never done that before! Lesvos is a beautiful island, the hotel very clean and well run in line with all Neilsons centres, the food very good indeed. We loved our spacious room, kept clean with the minimum of intrusion by the staff. The Waterski and Wakeboard team were fantastic and improved my previously minimal skills tremendously giving me the confidence and encouragement to try new things.

So our first trip to Lesvos, not sure what to expect. I heard it said that The Aeolian Village was the best hotel on the island! Well I don't know about the rest, but I think this hotel is truly special. Great facilities, wonderful food and very helpful and thoughtful staff. We planned this as a birding holiday and so we were amazed at all the sporting facilities on offer, sadly due to the birds and our senior years we only managed an afternoon on a kayak, but it was obvious that others were making full use of all on offer.
Special thanks must go to the Head Chef and his staff for the amazing selection of beautifully prepared food and to Marie in the dining area.
The rooms were well equipped with good size beds, fridge and TV and well designed so your balcony had a view of the pool or the sea.
Were there any negatives - well yes. Using the shower over the bath was a little claustrophobic, low ceilings and a narrow bath made me think I might fall over at any minute. Also the wi-fi was very intermittent.

Oh and one last thing - it is very difficult to serve yourself asparagus using a spoon. >:P ;^)

Would we go again? ---------------- OH YES!

I had a fanastic week with Neilson, the furnishings in the room were of a high standard and comfortable but on the whole I did not spend much time in the rooms as the weather was good and there were plenty of activities including in the holiday.
the staff were excellent, the food variety was good, the local village was a treat having a really greek island feel as all the beach fronted resturants extended over the beach on stilts. we eat out twice - really good value and quality of food. the transfer was long and might be hard for those with children being almost 2 hours and twisting roads rather like an alps transfer, but this is probably why the village is so traditional and untouched..

Just returned from Aeolian Vilage a few days ago - What a fantastic overall holiday. Great Beach and activities, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, wakeboarding, water skiing, paddle boarding with excellent well trained staff throughout and excellent safety boats on standby to help you out if needed, which some of us needed quite a bit when the wind dropped :o) Excellent food, so much choice and so much of it, far exceeded our expectations and excellent value for money. As you can see, we have had a fantastic holiday and already looking at going back this september. We were part of a group of eight, the general conversation about the whole holiday was excellent, even when we talked to other guests, all thought the same - long may it continue.
Only downside is the tedious journey from the airport to the Aeolian Village, about 2 hours by coach on many switchbacks, but its worth it.
The location is great, ALL the staff are very well trained and it shows.
Cant wait to go back.

Just returned from a wonderful week on the beautiful island of Lesvos. The Aeolian Village certainly met our expectations. Despite it being so early in the season, and obviously the staff all being new, we were not disappointed. The room was clean and a decent size, the restaurant staff were polite and the food was nice, but what really made the holiday so wonderful for me was the sailing. I'd been very nervous about it as I'd never sailed before but our instructor, Hogan, was patient, friendly and really gorgeous too with the most wonderful hair! so massive thanks to Hogan for helping me learn to sail and to the rest of the beach team too for all the help

The hotel is in a great location with an amazing beach and sailing area. Being able to kayak into the nearby village was great. The mountain bikes were all in great condition and the routes provided were also well thought out and easily followed. The 50k to the monastery and back is a killer but worth the views. The food was great for all meals of the day, with great options to dine on the nights out of resort in the near by village. Boats were all in average condition, our damage bill to boats was reasonably high (or maybe we were pushing it abit much) but abit more love and attention wouldn't go a miss.
So at the moment you are thinking why is this review only average?

Well - the main downside were the staff - (although the only person i don't have qualms about is Tommy the entertainment man who is fantastic).
The general attitude of the staff was poor, in comparison to Sunsail, Mark Warner etc, where the staff are attentive and always ensure you have a boat or are waiting to help you as you come ashore. Here - the staff were unattentive, lazy, and showed no willingness to get wet. For example, there was no help in getting a windsurfer together to head out, and i even rigged my own laser as i couldn't be bothered to wait for the chatting staff standing at the beach tower.
At dinner, many staff are allowed to eat in the hotel - therefore the queues mainly made up of staff were of most annoyance. Again comparable to other similar companies/resorts, staff would let you through or atleast wait until most of the guests had eaten.
Post dinner, retreating to the bar for a quiet drink or game of ping pong was more like heading out to Mahikis. The music was obviously chosen by the staff and for the staff, often discouraging the older members of our party from coming to the bar, and when they did, it was on so loud you could hardly speak or hear each other.
Often waiting for the bar took along time - this is obviously normal at most bars, except when you are waiting for staff or off duty staff to be served before you and not guests. Which again featured highly throughout the week, and the bar was often over populated by staff getting well oiled.

So overall, i feel if Sunsail or Mark warner ran this place, it would have been an extremely good beach resort. However, the poor human resource management approach let down this resort greatly. It almost felt as if our holiday and being there got in the way of many of the staffs social lives.

Anyway - rant over.

On the plus side this resort is well located in that it has a nice beach (for Greece) and is close to a beautiful village where tavernas directly over-look the sea... a real highlight of our holiday. The food is excellent and the staff and service are very good. Sailing is good due to good winds and enough kit to go around. Kids clubs for 4 year old and 7 year old were good - but no sailing tuition whatsoever for them. Lots of good activities for adults.

On the down-side the beach is across the road from the resort meaning that you cant over-look the sea from the restaurant or the bar... a personal negative for me. The rooms are small and sparse and the bathrooms very small - and lacking some essentials such as a shelf to put things on.

We went in the school holidays and there were very few babies and young children and loads of teenagers. The result of this was that we got some negative vibes from other holiday makers who had passed the baby stage and didnt really like seeing them in the dining room! As we had chosen to go at an expensive time of year the resort seemed to attract a certain type of clientele - those very OK with putting their needs before the needs of the others around them. As an example - on the bus from the resort to the airport my husband needed a seat, so he asked a passenger whether the seat next to her was taken (the only one left on the bus). She said it was (when it wasn't) as she wanted somewhere to rest her bag meaning that he would have to catch the next bus leaving me and our 3 children (including a baby) on the bus. Luckily a really lovely passenger gave up his seat and went on the next bus - a complete star! Of course, no one took the seat next to her so she caused disruption to another family purely for selfish reasons. This was not the only example of inconsiderateness that we had on the holiday.

Another real negative for us was the fact that we needed to collect our baby from childcare at lunchtime for 2 hours, which meant the day was chopped in half. On our sunsail holiday the year before - we could have had full day baby care.

All in all if we were to go on holiday again in peak season I would probably choose sunsail due to the nicer customers and better baby-care hours and because they actually taught my 7 year old to sail (Neilson did not do this at all - you had to be a 'hot shot' to learn to sail).
