“Relaxing week”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2013

The two of us work pretty bonkers city jobs and we realised that we both had a chance for a week off with a weeks notice. The only aim was to chill out for a few days and we plumped for Coriva beach which in the end fitted us really well. We grabbed a rental from Heraklion and just drove down, it took a few hours but is a nice drive.

The accomodation is clean and comfortable, but I would say basic/not fancy. The food was very simple stuff but left me feeling pretty healthy. Breakfast was continental buffet style, evening we went off the menu which meant fish/greek salads/lamb chops. On the whole the hotel was very comfortable and the staff are really friendly.

We really used it as a base and drove out every day to to something (historic, beach, town, mountain etc..). For nights out (there is not much local life) the bus into Ierapetra was a few Eur and very good and a taxi back was super easy (~25Eur?).

I liked that we could have breakfast (basic but decent continental buffet) and then run down for a swim in the sea before the days outing and then similarly, jump out of the car in the evening, get a swim & a beer as the sun went down. Some people might not like the pebbly beach but it didn't make a lot of difference to me. Nice sandy ones are a short drive away (Green beach, go East :) ).

When we went, the place seemed to be very full of ageing Germans. They were a pretty friendly bunch, seemed to drink a lot of raki and grin and wave a lot. They were all asleep by 11.30.

I would go back, it was a relaxing, very easy holiday. Personally, I would not do it without a car.

I went at the beginning of May after searching for hours for hotels to stay in on Crete. Within 5 minutes of finding Coriva we booked the room because the photos are amazing but they don't do it justice it's so much better when you get there! Everyone is exceptionally friendly and the taverna on the beach fed us very well each night. I've got so many memories I will cherish for years to come and I thank the staff for making them possible. I will certainly be going back!

Great location, isolated from routists and noise, fantastic staff, right on a beutiful super crystal clear black pebble beach. The restaurant they own had excellent food. Highly recommended, would easily stay again when in south crete.

We have stayed in Coriva beach for a week in late september(warm sea, less tourists). The position of the hotel is very good, nice well-kept garden, pool and access to the beach (which is beautiful). Rooms are quite spacioius, cleaned every day, our room smelled of cigarettes a little bit. Rooms in the main building on the opposite side are facing a fairly busy road. Breakfast was also very good, one can take whatever he/she wants from varied menu. (nice view from the terrace). Dinners were a little bit worse than breakfasts and quite monothematic.
Koutsounari is a romantic village. Once you there I definitely advise to visit local waterfalls and surrounding hills (10km trip). I can also recommend Taverna Asteria (almost the highest point of the village) for its good and cheap souvlaki, magnificent view and hospitable owner.
It is also necessary to rent a car because thist part of Crete is the prettiest. You can rent a car from nearby Jiannis, but send your girl first :-) he would make a discount.
Overall very good location and hotel, but do not stay the whole time at one place.

Room Tip: In the main bulding - seaview.

Very beautiful, Cretan style, with air-conditioning, near a lovely clean and quite beach. Being there can be compared to staying with friends, who do their best to make you fill yourself at home. . There is also a tavern right in front of it at the beach, with home-made food and very nice personel. The best place for quiet rest and family vacation.

I spent the most amazing fortnight in early August at this lovely hotel and its amazing location on the beachfront. The staff of the hotel was very friendly and caring and they satisfied all my needs. Last but not least, the Greek tavern which serves traditional Cretan specialities and belongs to the hotel was excellent, both in service and quality of food. The location of the tavern provides breathtaking scenery as it is located on one of Europe's best rated beaches on the Libyan sea. I would happily recommend this to all my friends and relatives.

I went to that hotel based on the revews of Tripadvisor but it is the first time I feel missinformed. I also believe that some enthousiastic reviews are suspicious!
The hotel is in a good location, but the main building of the hotel is old without any serious renovations just "puches". For example, the WC door was broken and couldn't be closed! The room although is clean with daily service is not worth the 79 euros per night they charge! Also breakfast was poor.
The access to the sea is not suitable for handicaped people or strollers if you have baby, because there are stairs. The beach Taverna Pelagos although conveniently located by the sea is good only for soft drinks. We had dinner there and the food quality was so poor (even dangerous for consumption) we ate nothing.
On the other hand I must mention that all the stuff I met in the hotel were very friendly and nice people always trying to help. Overall, the hotel needs serious renovation in order to stay competitive with other newer hotels. Until then is not recommended.

TZORTZAKIELENI, Owner at Coriva Beach Hotel, responded to this review, 15 August 2012
Dear Guest,

To begin with, we would like to thank you for your presence at our hotel as well as for your time spent to comment on the hotel’s services.

Our guests’ comments are valuable tools that enable us to ameliorate our services. It is obvious, nonetheless, that the immediate reference of any problem directly to the hotel’s responsible personnel will facilitate its immediate solution, to the extent possible (e.g. a non-properly working door can be fixed by our 24-hour maintenance service within 5 min., at a time convenient to our guests).

Moreover, we believe, in general and based on other guests’ comments, that our hotel provides clean and comfortable rooms (many of them already renovated and others under renovation), a pleasant stay, breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffees or drinks at any time, free and direct access to one of the cleanest beaches in Europe, awarded with the 2nd gold European prize in 2012 (Quality Coast Award), access to ramps for the disabled everywhere (even at the beach, except from one spot where, unfortunately, it is not possible because of different height levels. There are, however, six rooms available with direct access to the beach situated at the side of our hotel with no steps required to reach them). Furthermore, our hotel is situated at close distance to the town of Ierapetra (only 9 Km) and provides a peaceful and family-friendly environment. Bearing all the above in mind, we consider the quality of services offered at the specific rate is really reasonable.

Despite the fact that we fully respect the subjective nature of any review on all other issues, one comment though took us by surprise in an unpleasant way, i.e. the comment concerning the quality of food in Pelagos Tavern, an indispensable part of our hotel unit. Having in mind all positive reviews made by our guests as well as the fact that so far there was no negative comment nor any complaint (either verbal or written), it is very surprising and we cannot help wondering what was the base for the comment “dangerous for consumption food ” and even in case a problem existed, why such problem was not reported at that time to any of our employees or to the manager of the restaurant, so an immediate explanation, apology or even a refund could be provided, according to the hotel’s policy.

To conclude with, it must be noted that every review on our efforts, either positive or non-positive, is the result of one’s own initiative, as in the present case.

Being the ambition of our firm the continuous improvement of both the hotel’s infrastructure and our services, we are confident that with your support we shall succeed.
