This is a typical greek hotel but with superb views and extremely friendly owners. Costas is a gent and his staff hard-working and amiable.....the place is kept immaculately and you can choose from a vast array of drinks at the pool bar.....did you know their are thirteen different types of Bacardi?

We were right at the top of the hotel, so had the most fantastic views of Golden Beach from our balcony. We hired a car from Potos Cars at the bottom of the infamous 'hill' where Pauline and Martin were so helpful to us and gave us tips on where to go. Thus we were able to drive up the 'hill' and park right outside the door to our room....extremely convenient!

Thassos island is great if you have transport of some kind....lots of fantastic beaches....Aliki, Psilli Ammos, Paradise......to mention just a few. Limenas, the capital is lively and interesting with a archeological museum and an ancient theatre....lots of shops too! You can also get a ferry from Skala Prinos to Kavala on the mainland for 5 Euros each....great shops, cafés and a fascinating, cobbled old-town to explore.

Of the inland Thassian towns Theologus (near Potos) was worth a visit and also Panagia (just above Golden Beach) was pretty, once you get off the main road. Skala Potamia (far end of Golden Beach) was just opening up so not all shops and restaurants were available but it is still a lovely walk there from the hotel....and the beach is wonderful.

We found great food all over the island but the best was in Finikas restaurant, Golden Beach.....also recommend the Lamb Kleftico in Captain Restaurant, Golden Beach as the best I've ever had!

One tip......we arrived early May and though weather was hot in the day it was cold at night....so ask for extra blankets and take fleecy PJ's......though by the end of May I suspect it's probably scorching!

All in all this was a great value holiday!

Yes this is a budget hotel, but it has all the basic facilities you need to have a wonderful time. The best bit is the view over the bay which all the rooms have. The pool is small, true, but the sea is very big and there is some good swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing to be had. The rooms are basic and you need to be able to cook on a single electric ring in one pan, but we had plenty of wonderful meals doing just that with some pasta, meat and local veg, also a greek salad every night. We also had three meals out which were lovely. The hotel owners are friendly and we ended all of our evenings with a drink by the pool at the friendly bar. Thomson organise the holidays here very well and the rep was one of the best I've had on a package holiday.

We stayed here as part of a Thompson holiday, for one week we had amazing views and felt a little out the way on golden beach which is exactly what we wanted.
there were only other couples bobbing about so no screaming kids by the pool!
golden beach was ok, although not much going on their it provides a good base to see the rest of the island, as the beach is its main attraction it is consistently rammed, and hiring a quad is a very pleasant experience to get you out and around seeing all the history.
it was my partners birthday while we were away so the owner Costas was very keen to organize a little something even offering to nip into town to get cake.
we were made to feel very welcome indeed and really enjoyed our stay...
we are not really into returning to the same place over and over however we feel we would certainly return here just to relax and feel thoroughly welcome!

Room Tip: try to get a room on 1st or 2nd floor to get the best views

We visited the Emerald in June 2013. On arrival we were met by the owners Costas and Katerina, who were very friendly helpful, even telling us that we would not need to purchase air con as the weather was not going to be too hot. On entering our studio I was wowed by the view, it really was amazing. The studios are very clean and very well appointed. Yes the hill to the studios is rather steep, but the views compensate, and within 5 mins you are at the beautiful sandy beach. We used The Fedra restaurant sunbeds and if you buy drinks or food the beds are free.
The best restaurant is La Terrasse at the Envalion Hotel, you need to book this restaurant but you wont be disappointed. We also enjoyed Zigli .
Will definitely be booking the Emerald again. What a lovely place with amazing views

I booked the Emerald again with Costas & Katerina as have been coming back here for many years now.

They booked my favourite room for me again with spectacular views (all have a view of the bay/sea etc) and welcomed me with open arms and treated me as one of the family again. This is a very special place to visit and I just love spending days by the pool & bar where they do lovely cool drinks, coffees/frappes (the best on the island!!!), toasties, ice creams etc. Just what you want when you are sunbathing, reading your book and wanting a nice relaxing holiday. Nine times out of ten I had the pool to myself so it was just so lovely - I want to go back there now! The beach is a 5-10 minute walk down the hill and there are local tavernas and bars to choose from for lunch or dinner. 2 x supermarkets in either direction down the hill, again about 10 minutes walk away. Potos car rental at the bottom of the hill - great deals to be had and worth hiring for a trip or two around the island to see the sights.

The ground of the hotel are so pretty with all the marble footpaths, olive trees and flowers - great care is given to the gardens and upkeep. I love seeing all the veggies they are growing too!

This is the perfect place to stay whether you are a couple, family, group of friends or a single traveller like me. I'll be booking again as soon as I possibly can so that I can have another 2 weeks with my lovely friends at the Emerald Hotel in Golden Beach.

We decided to stay at Smaragdi 2 instead of the Emerald which we stayed at in 2011. The Studios were a typical Greek "basic" as we expected, very clean and well maintained and yet again a superb view!! Costas and Katerina the owners again met us with a very warm welcome. Yes there is a hill to the apartments, but it is short and you can be down to the lovely golden sands of golden sands beach in 5 minutes. We did find that although going a week later this time round, one the weather was more changeable and 2 it was so quiet. This was such a shame especially for the lovely people of thassos as everywhere around the island we went they said, it was a slow start and they were looking forward to seeing the tourists. We don't normally visit the same place twice but decided to go back to try things we couldn't on first trip. Would highly recommend the Zeus boat trip on Friday at Golden Beach 10am, the owner is vey hospitable, we got a lovely coffee on stepping onto the boat, stopped to try some fishing, went to a lovely cove to swim and then a massive bbq!! then we went to a wonderful little beach only access by boat unless your a local and know it is there! If you havent been yet do go and visit golden beach if you want a relaxing holiday with lovely friendly locals and the food and drink is so cheap here. Enjoy

Room Tip: All romms have a great view, higher the better

stayed here for 2 weeks in may 2013. I e mailed the hotel in advance and asked for a top floor room in the corner if possible....and that's exactly what I got...excellent.the owners are great./..very welcoming and friendly. the room are typically greek studios. kettle...2 ring electric cooker...basic pots/pans/utensils etc.. sheets and towels changed twice a week. room is clean and shower was good. no compalints at all...just whay I expected.
but the hill up to the hotel is a real killer...but the reward is the stunning view you get of the bay.

Room Tip: any room is good
