“Very nice place, but you can't use it like it can be used.”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

The place is amazing and it has all the fascilities you need. The rooms are nice, but the beds where we were sleeping were uncomfortable. The pool area is very good with sunbeds and umbrellas. The problem is that you can use the pool just to 19 o'clock, after that is forbbiden to get in the pool, and the sun is up there till 21 o clock. The personal is ok they are polite, but they are all the time looking to find a way to get more money from you. They are wery greedy for money. When we just arrived, we hadn'd even look for the apartment to see if it is ok ,but they immediatly ask from us to pay. Also is forbiden to take a drink from your appartment and drink it near the pool area or the bar. That is a way just to drink in their bar, and spend your money there. All in all we had nice holliday there, but it could be more better if the personal was more hospitable and less greedy for money.

Stayed a week at the Margarita Apartments last week of June with my sister. We were only looking for somewhere lovely to relax and chill out away from hectic London life.We certainly picked the right place .As most other reviews will say, the views were stunning, the apartment basic but thats all we wanted and needed. We made our own breakfasts and lunches with the supplies from the shop up the hill, and ate at the bar/restaurant every evening. The prices reasonable and we came home with euros! The service was good and the food enjoyable. The pool was fantastic and very clean, the maid came every day to empty bins etc. All in all a fantasic relaxing break. Will definately come back again. Many thanks to Dimitri & Tracey,Chris and Dora and the very friendly Kate who made every trip to the bar/restaurant a good experience.

Margarita Apartments in Ipsos is a lovely place to stay if you want to spend quiet and peaceful time away from the busy and hectic city life. Very relaxing, beautiful view, fresh air and great atmosphere are guaranteed during the stay. Spacious pool area; large, clean pool, clean area around buildings, green and bushy.

Customer service is of high quality, friendly, helpful, unintrusive (taking customer service in Britain as a standard to compare with). Prices at the bar/restaurant are reasonable in comparison with other restaurants and taverns (cash only is accepted, no cards).

Rooms: We stayed (there were two of us) in a studio apartment on the ground floor. We did not have aircon (it was not necessary - it was cool during hot days and warm during nights) but rooms above us had aircons. The room has very basic facilities - 2 beds, a mirror, a wardrobe, 2 stools, a little table, a little kitchenette with a fridge, a little electric cooker, a sink, basic cutlery/ crockery for self-catering; shower/toilet with hot/cold water. All of it are not of "a first use" condition. I mention that specifically for those who are from London and those cities where in/out facilities and equipment are regularly renewed, replaced. If the rooms are booked through travel companies visitors will not get extra services such as regular towel and bed linen replacements. But the rooms are cleaned daily, rubbish removed daily and general cleanliness are of a good level. No TV/Wi-Fi in the room, no radio (they were not in ours).

Outside and entertainment: Margaritas apartments are located on a side of a mountain (as the most of the apartments and villas are - Corfu is an island of hills and mountains mainly). It is about 1 km away from the beach.
There are lots of restaurants and taverns at the beach, a night club, one supermarket (size of Local Tesco/Sainsburys ) with two floors, umbrellas and deck chairs can be rented at the beach (dont know the price as we did not use them). The beach is with pebbles as the most of the Corfu's coast is and not sandy. There are few shops that sell swimming and sunbathing gear so there is no problem in getting smth in case of loosing or forgetting to take with you. The beach is located along the main road and has a beautiful sea and mountain view. There is a city bus service available on the main road for those who wants to explore nearby towns or make a trip to Corfu's main city - Kerkira (it's worth going there). Kerkira city itself has a chain of city and intercity buses for those who wants to explore the island in a cost effective way (all buses have aircons).

Now the main point of interest - the money. How much money to take and how much things cost. I will start with that most places(bars, taverns, restaurants) have cash only policy. There are probably places that accept cards (shops in the city), but cash is mainly desirable way of payment. The Supermarket at the Ipsos beach accepts cash and credit cards only. So if you travel the best thing is to take cash, a debit card and a credit card with you. You may not need to take a lot of cash as there are cash machines available along the beach road where you can easily withdraw cash from you British bank account. The prices in Corfu and that includes small towns and villages are at the level of London prices and even Central London. It is not cheap there particularly during tourist seasons. So if you travel you will probably need to have 150 pounds for spending minimum for two people per day. This amount is sufficient to keep you fed during the day, to have some drinks (coffee, soft drinks, alcohol drinks) and treats, to move around by buses, to try water entertainments, to rent deckchairs and umbrellas at the basic level.

The tricky bit about self-catering is that you are limited in what you cook (you can either boil things or fry; the electric cooker in the apartments is small so you have a small frying pan and a medium size boiling bowl - its enough for 2 people, but if you are a family of 4 you may need to cook things twice depending on how much and what everyone eats). Also on the first day when we arrived we had to spend more then on average on: washing up liquid and sponge, washing powder for washing clothes, shower gel, soap, shampoo, suncream, aftersun gel plus chopping board (we did not have one in the room) and food itself, plus smoke if anyone smokes (unless you bring all these with you from abroad, but it means extra luggage, extra weight, extra time for checking-in and collecting bags at the airport) - all that costed us around 50 euro for 2 people. Plus take into consideration that it's very hot in Corfu and you are very tired after swimming and sunbathing, also if you do a bit of walking, a bit of clothes washing (there are no washing machines at the resort unless you come down to the main road and use laundry service) - all that will affect your desire to actually cook at the end of the day. By the middle of our stay we found easiest way was to eat outside - either in the restaurant on the premises or in the town.

In Margarita's restaurant we were spending around 15-20 euros for breakfast and drinks and 25-35 euros for dinner and drinks for two people a day (plate of breakfast - 5-6 euro, cola- 1,5 euro/glass, glass of house wine - 1,5 euro, glass of cocktail - 4 euro, salad 3-5 euro/plate, pasta-greek specialties - 6-10 euro per plate, per person, frappe - 2 euro/glass, 1 l of water - 1 euro, desserts - 2-4 euro per portion). You will probably need to buy bottles of water regularly for drinking or making tea/coffee in the room as the tap water smells of chlorine. Another small detail in respect to self-catering at Margarita appts: its about 1 km (20-30 min walk depends how fast) away from the main beach down the hill or 10-15 min walk to the little village shop with basics up the hill - when you buy food in the shops you have to walk with bags 10-15 min down the hill or 20-30 min up the hill unless you hire a car (200-400 euros for 7 days plus 1.80 per liter for unleaded petrol), a little motorbike (60-150 euro depending on strength and how badly used), a quadro-motorbike (cannot tell the price - we did not use them...I am guessing could be around 150 euro, may be even more for a week plus fuel) or a taxi - 8-10 euro for one ride up to the apartment (multiply that by number of day you stay or number of trips).

Your daily food shopping in Corfu will cost you an average daily food shopping in South-East London plus 10-20% on the top just to be on the safe side. Bus travel from Ipsos to Kirkira city - 2 euro/person/one trip, daily bus pass - 5 euro. Intercity bus service price starts at 2,30-2,60 euro and up depends on what town you are going (44 euro per person, per trip is the price to go to Athens). To go from Isos to Kirkira city by taxi/privet car - 35-40 euro one way. A boat trip - 10 euro per person/30 min but may vary depends on the town, distance and views to see. Renting 1 umbrella and 2 deck chairs - 8 euro a day but again depends on town and beach popularity. Cigarettes- pk20 Marlboro light - 3.90 euro

Costs of eating in restaurants and taverns are between 50-60 euro for 2 people/one time (plate of salad - 6-8 euro, plate of main food - 8-18 euro depends on what you are ordering, glass of frappe 2,50 euro, soft drinks - 1,50 - 3 euro/glass, starters - 5-7 euro/portion plus alcohol - 3-10 euro depends on what you are ordering ).

One thing to mention for travelers from Western Europe: be prepared for disturbing sights of sick, suffering, starving cats there and then. Me and my partner are not faint-hearted people, but the look of hungry, sick, damaged (rotten ear, bleeding head, swollen eyeball), in pain cats from time to time made us stomach sick and upset. The disturbing part is that there is no animal rescue service to call for help; these cats often sit opposite a restaurant or tavern people eat in or on the roads to the villas and get no help from restaurant/villa owners at all, not even bowls with drinking water. We saw only two places in Kerkira city that had donation boxes for animals on their premises to help them with food and it was great and warming feeling to see that after all we saw. We even had to buy tinned cat food for cats in Margarita apartments when food shopping as we could not watch skinny weak cats wondering around the area. The animal ignorance is a norm on the island so be prepared and don't get upset....and if you can, please help cats with food and water (one tin of cat food costs 90 cents in the shop) - if the most residents (not all of them though) of the island do nothing, at least visitors can cut animal suffering to a certain level.

For young people: every year there is a Helios (Sun) Festival takes place in Summer (it was 4-5 of July in 2014). Its massive youth gathering in Ipsos from all Europe with lots of club music, drinks and fun. Its very loud, very lively and fantastic time and opportunity to get relaxed. Dont miss it, however check dates of the Festival before travel.

Overall both of us had a very nice time at Margarita apartments. It was very lovely and relaxing. We had a good rest and "recharged our batteries" until the next holiday time. I rated as "average" because there is no "good" option available to mark. Margarita apartments are good place to stay with excellent customer service.

Wishing good time to those who are about to travel to Corfu.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have easy access, no aircon is needed, flowers in front, nice top mountain and sk...

I can only echo what has been written by those who have gone before me. The Margarita Apartments although basic is one of the best friendliest places I have ever stayed. The rooms are very clean and cater for your basic self-catering needs. The staff are excellent, very accommodating and friendly, nothing is too much and the food is a match for anywhere else in the local area.

I fully recommend this accommodation to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday, in a prime location with excellent customer service. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dimitri, Tracey, Chris, Dora, & Kate for making our short break one of the most memorable holidays my wife and I have had in a long time

Room Tip: Book early to avoid disappointment

just returned from a beautiful but short stay at the Margarita Apts,
I can only reiterate what others have said, If you are looking for complete R&R, in an idyllic location then this is the place for you.
Apartments are of a good size ,although the bathroom is a little snug (well it was in ours) & shower was amazing, & always had hot water.
Facilities limited if you want to do the full self catering thing..........but why bother, the restaurant is excellent very reasonably priced & generally cheaper than the other local restaurants,
everything was spotlessly clean & maintained.
Nothing was ever too much for them.
location is good but walking back from town is not for those with limited mobility, a very hilly location so be prepared, flat shoes etc,
Ipsos itself is a mile long strip with bars/cafes & a smattering of shops, beautiful views with a thin strip of shingle beach, (sea is sandy once you get over the pebbles).
Corfu town is a must see, NO.7 bus (blue) alleyways little nooks & crannys. If you are savvy you can get the 2.30 bus back & instead of the uphill walk back it stops in the little village of Kayo Katorinia which is only 5 mins downhill.
A massive thanks to Dimitri, Tracey, Chris & Dora, & big hugs to Stephi & little Chris, also cant forget Kate who worked tirelessly all week.
We have never felt so welcome on a holiday, they all work so hard & make you feel like one of the family. Never been to Greece before but already viewing flights for next year.

Room Tip: High floors have great views.

We stayed here from 28/05/2014 to 12/06/2014 and paid £580 (for 2) which included airfares, luggage and transfers. We had a basic apartment on the ground floor without A/C.
Great welcome and quick "check in". We found our room by ourselves without any problems. There are steps to get to any room. Key operated door. Room was nicely prepared with extra pillows and blankets. No freebies. Good kettle in room. No hairdryer in shower but plenty of hot water. Nice towels, 2 bath and 2 hand both good sized. ( look after them by putting them on the external airer after use as they are only changed twice a week).
Be warned that the apartments are in the middle of a heavily wooded area and insects abound. Put on insect repellent as soon as possible and plug in your mosquitoe devices immediately. There is limited drawer space and only a small wardrobe. Beds are firm but we found them comfortable. As the weather was still comparitively cool I used the extra blankets and did not find it necessary to ask for any more cooling. In July and August I think that it would be essential to have a room with A/C. For a 3* S/C apartment we found it fitted our requirements.
The bar sells a good selection of drinks at fair prices and wine and food at fair prices ( a large glass on local wine is 1.5E) the meals are of a decent quality and size and are quite varied in there variety. The menu goes from baked potatoes to good steaks and salads. Some of the items seem to be sourced from the freezer or are prepared in advance. But as the restaurant is really an extended snack bar that is to be expected. Service was good and quite rapid. An evening meal for 2 with a jug of wine 500ml came to about 15 to20E.
The apartments are set about a quarter of the way up a hill and therefore get quite a breeze. The distance to Ipsos is about a kilometre and takes about 20mins to walk ( we did walk as well ) and it costs 10E by taxi. The 2 inclines are short and not very steep.
Distance to the village is about 800mters and is all uphill. There is a shop that sells everything in the village center. Local wine is 2.5E for 1.5Ltrs (white, rose and red(.The village has several restaurants and cafes.
We ate at the "Select" and "Limeri" both were well worth a visit.
The cliental at the Margarita were mainly British with a few Dutch. There is free Wi-Fi around the bar. There is a good library of English books in the bar. Smoking is allowed everywhere. We used water straight from the tap without problems but others bought bottled. We ran up a daily bill and paid each morning. Came to 30 - 40 euros ( we drink a lot ). As for the lack of kitchen implements we bought a set from "Poundland" to take and just left them there on leaving. The linen was changed just twice during our stay and towels 4 times. A maid cleaned to a limited but reasonable standard each day.
The problem with our basic room was that it had little ventilation at the far end away from the entrance and so the shower floor never dried and frequently smelt musty. Our apartments were known as "the caves".
Apart from the restaurants in the village we also ate at Dominoes" and "The Squirrel" both well recommended. As we did not have a car we walked to them taking about 12-15 mins to each. I am writing separately about the 4 restaurants we ate at:-
The Select.
Dominoes.
Squirrels.
Limeri.
All worth a visit.
The attitude of the staff was impeccable and so welcoming but do remember it is a business and extras have to be paid for. Well done to all of the staff. Well Chris, Dimitri and Kate.

Just back from 12 nights in this amazing complex and would highly recommend it as somewhere to stay Everyone who works there is friendly, the food is wonderful and very reasonably priced, Our appartment was very comfortable with everything we needed in it and was very clean. We also had a distant view to Albania from our private balcony. The appartments are close to a local shop, the beach and several authentic Greek tavernas - if you want to venture out - and are located in a lovely quiet hill village which is only a walk away from the busier beach area of Ipsos where you can find more lively nightlife. There is a good sized pool which was well maintained and very clean and a fantastic bar/restaurant serving homemade Greek and English dishes.and which has a great atmosphere. Thank you Chris, Dora, Dimitris, Tracy and Kate we had the best time at The Margarita and will definately come back. Beautiful place
