My husband, little boy and I have just returned from a lovely holiday at The Kontokali Bay and I would thoroughly recommend the hotel to anyone looking for peace and quiet and for an amazing view. The setting is absolutely beautiful and the staff were extremely helpful and kind and were especially lovely to our little boy.

We stayed in a family room with a garden view with far reaching views of the very pretty Gouvia Marina and it was comfortable and a decent size. The only negatives were that the bathroom was on the small size and the built in hair dryer was pretty useless. It took me about 20 minutes to dry mid length hair, so I would suggest bringing your own. There also wasn't an iron in the room, although there is an ironing service but it is quite pricey. The last niggle was that room service wasn't available and I think the hotel are really missing a trick here.

We stayed on a half board basis and could either have breakfast and lunch or breakfast and dinner and all the food was fresh and tasty and the choice was excellent. The desserts were amazing and we are missing them already although our waistline's aren't.

The amenities were great and the beaches, restaurants and common areas were spotless. We heard rave reviews from other guests about the Spa but didn't get the chance to try it out. The gym was well equipped and we were given a key to access it at our convenience.

Our little boy had a terrific time and was able to use the children's pool and the adult infinity pool which was fabulous. He also went to the children's club which was really sweet and had great art activities and toys to keep him amused. There weren't that many other children there but that may of had something to do with the time of year in relation to school term times.

All things considered, we had a great time. The only major downside was that some of the guests were sour faced and glum and needed an major injection of joy. Many of them were middle aged, middle class and German, so take from that what you will. We can report that the practice of "reserving" the best sunbeds with towels at the crack of dawn is alive and well and incredibly annoying!

That said, nothing should be taken away from the wonderful aesthetics of the grounds of the hotel and the magnificant staff.

The hotel is impressive to look at and we were very excited when we arrived. We soon found, however, that the experience did not live up to the fancy facade. First off, meal time is like a cattle call. My new husband and I compared it to eating at an IKEA, except we prefer the meatballs at IKEA. Very impersonal, get um in, get um out dinning. They actually had the nerve to turn out the lights on us while we were still drinking a bottle of wine - it was 10:30 pm! You get the feeling like they want your money and really don't care who you are or what you need. Couple examples: we wanted a rental car, and so the man at the front desk gave us a pamphlet. When we asked if we could drop the car off at the airport, he curtly replied that he didn't know and we needed to work that out with the company. Not the response I would expect from a 5 star hotel. Also, we needed a razor. We were told that we needed to purchase one from the store, which had closed. Also, not what I would expect from a so called 5 star hotel.

We do casual weekend getaways all the time in and around Seattle. We would say that every place we have stayed locally is better than this hotel. Also, every place we stayed in Greece was better, because we felt like "guests" and not a number. Also, we were on our Honeymoon. Every hotel we stayed at, my husband notified of this and each hotel had some wine or flowers in the room and a little card. Well, we had wine in the room (we paid for, which is fine) and a blank card - and that sums up the stay....... Just enough effort to get you in and nothing to back it up. Hotel grounds were average.

We stayed at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel in Paleokastritsa a few days later. We had considered this resort and I am dumbfounded why we chose Kontokali instead - maybe better internet pictures? Akrotiri was the total opposite of Kontokali. We had stunning views of the bay from our room, could walk to town, had NICE staff, had local entertainment and dancing (Kontokali had a magic show - are you kidding me?!) If you want a super fancy building, you may be a tiny bit disappointed, but for us, we wished we would have stayed here for our entire visit to Corfu. The charm was awesome, building beautiful and why we came to Greece in the first place.

Just a note - we like fancy and we like charm - we stayed at the Four Seasons in Seattle, just prior to leaving for Greece. Kontokali was not fancy and more importantly not charming. We left feeling unsatisfied.

“Dear JDBSeattle,

In response to your comments posted on TripAdvisor, I would like to comment as follows:
- You …..fail to mention that instead of a sea front Superior Room we upgrade you to a sea front - Junior Suite with private pool (3 times up the daily rate).
- Upon arrival we had flowers, fruit and wine in your Jr. Suite.
- Your description of ‘meal time’ is absolutely false and mean. We have an excellent buffet for Breakfast and Dinner. I urge you to check all previous reviews to attest the “truth”.
- Our main restaurant closes at 21.45h. We cleared, set the dining room for breakfast and all employees left. The lights were turned off at 22.35 by the waiter of the A la Carte Restaurant (outside restaurant). In your way out of the restaurant, the waiter apologized for it as he did not see you sitting there.
- Contrary to your description (car rental) that you did not have the proper attention from the front desk agent; he did assist you in filling up (in front of the reception) the contract with the car rental employee. He could not confirm the “drop off” at the airport himself as this had to be confirmed by the employee of the car company.
- We do not provide a razor (during the day) if you requested it. As a result of your inquiry, we will extend this service to 24h as only our Night Manager provides this service to the guests for late arrivals, early c/outs etc.
- Hotel grounds are average? No comments (See other guests’ evaluation-opinion!)
- It is not appropriate of me to comment when you compare Kontokali Bay Resort and Spa to another property, I leave up to reviewers to “judge it”.

Hiding behind anonymity (JDBSeattle) you have the right to be heard; however it does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously. One should judge a hotel for its “value for money” and overall the services it offers and not focusing only on the small-incident-perceptions of what is “proper” and blow it out of proportions.

You are looking for hotels that are fancy and full of charm. We, at Kontokali Bay Resort and Spa are not trying to be fancy or full of charm. We provide quality services and true-hospitality and we do that with flair by meeting or even exceeding our guests’ expectations and paying attention to details. Furthermore, we are very straight forward in admitting our “failures” If for some reason we do not meet the expectations of our guests and we apologize and correct the problem, so it won’t occur again in the future. However, in your case while you stayed with us only for 2 nights, and the description of “your-problems”, I have difficulties in doing it.

Thank you for visiting Greece and particularly Corfu and you are ABSOLUTELY WRONG of your “perception” of Kontokali Bay Resort and Spa.

Wishing you much happiness with the …..new husband.

We have just returned from a truly fantastic holiday at the Kontokali Bay Hotel. We have been visiting the hotel since 1984 and have never been disappointed.

The attention to detail was remarkable. Everywhere was scrupulously clean and well maintained. Everything possible was done to ensure that the requirements of guests were well met. Nothing was too much trouble as the staff worked hard to maintain an exceptionally high standard. Every member af staff was polite, helpful, friendly and efficient. The Maitre d' Hotel, the pool bar staff, Mairie ( Reception) and Nelly ( Guest relations) were particularly outstanding.

The Hotel Spa was a truly wondrous place. It was here that stress just seemed to float away and exhausted bodies gradually became re-vitalised.

The wide range of activities ensured that there was provision for guests of all ages.

The entire ethos of the hotel was such that guests felt relaxed and well cared for.

We would certainly recommend the Kontokali Bay Hotel and will definitely return in the future.

We have just returned as a family of five plus a grandparent from another wonderful weeks holiday at Kontokali Bay - our fifth visit in the last 6 years - and it would appear we are certainly not alone in coming back - the hotel seems to thrive on repeat visitors - one family we spoke to have been twice a year for the last 14 years! - some we heard of had been visiting for over 20 years.

This is testimony to the efforts that the management and staff put in to welcoming guests and delivering a first class service. Compare the other reviews and the way in which Alex the general manager is grateful for praise and gives an apology or explanation if things haven't quite gone right.

In terms of location we find it ideal - usually booking direct with the hotel (Elpida in reservations is always most helpful either on the phone or in emails) we jump in a taxi from the airport at around 15 minutes and 20 euros later you arrive at the Kontokali Bay. It is true that there is not much in terms of local character and greek life in the immediate vicinity, but Corfu town is a 3 euro return trip away and the bus stop is only a few hundred metres from the hotel entrance - and with free parking and car hire facilities it seems a good base for touring the island.

The hotel welcomes children of all ages and although there can be a lot of children at times I would not let this put you off if you are not travelling with kids as they appear to be generally of the well behaved variety. There is no piped music and forced aerobics around the pool, but there is plenty for kids to do - volleyball, table tennis, tennis, games room, internet terminal - as well as a small supervised mini - club in the gardens.

The hotel is not part of a big chain and is closed for 5 months of the year - it seems that they make good use of the closed periods to make sure that the property is well maintained, improvements such as the recently built spa, harbour side a'la carte lunchtime restaurant and room upgrades seem to have taken place each time we visit. Although it is true that the 1970's architecture is not wonderfully attractive, and some of the rooms are approaching the time when an upgrade will be due soon, but the established and well tended landscaping, and high standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel more than make up for this.

With young children (our youngest was only 8 weeks old when she first visited) we have previously opted for the bungalow rooms. These are separate from the main hotel building set in established gardens, some with views across the lawn to the beach. These are ideal for families with children who want the convenience of a hotel but with some informal open space to play on rather than a balcony, The "bungalows" are effectively standard hotel rooms in small blocks - although some have been enlarged and upgraded with private plunge pools and separate living areas. However, this time we opted for the main hotel building - the only disadvantage to this was that it was slightly noisier - particularly as doors had a tendency to slam shut in the wind if the balcony door was also open.

We opted for a bay view room - with views across to Gouvia Marina - in some ways given that you might spend all day looking out to sea from the beach, the marina view was more interesting. There is a good range of room availablity including suites and family rooms - the hotel website has some good photographs and a rate card for price comparison. The standard room is adequate in size - we used the sofa bed in each of the rooms as a childs bed - if only two adults were sharing the room would probably appear more spacious. the balcony was a good size with tow chairs, a table and a drying rack.

The staff and management culture are strong points of the hotel - many of the staff seem familiar from our first visit and all seem to work well as a team and take a pride in giving a good service. As stated above the whole hotel is very clean, no sticky tables or grubby corners - tables are cleared promptly at all meals and in the bars. We are greeted like old friends by Vasilli the maitre d'hotel and Kostas his deputy who were always on hand at mealtimes to ensure the staff were working as they should and guests were looked after. The room was cleaned well with fresh towels and sheets keeping the room feeling fresh. A complimentary bottle of wine, water and fruit basket was left in the room.

The food is a good standard with freshly prepared buffet breakfasts kept well stocked throughout the service. Lots of fresh fruit, pastries, yoghurt, cereal, cheeses and meats as well as the normal cooked fare allowed you to eat a variety at breakfast time.

Lunchtime is in the seafront taverna with a good selection of grilled meats and fish, backed up by giros, and other more traditional greek dishes, salads and fresh fruit. Whilst service was open for a good few hours all dishes were refreshed regularly. If on full board the evening meal could be switched for lunch. If you only have a small appetite at lunchtime you can have a small salad with feta and bread for under 5 euros or ask for half portions.

Our youngest daughter has some food allergies and Vasilli was always on hand to ensure that she had a special meal prepared if there was nothing suitable on the buffet. Nice touches from the senior members of the staff, like a plate of fresh fruit or ice creams for the kids makes you feel valued as a guest.

The evening meal on half board is again a buffet with an extensive salad bar, soup and a good variety of meat and fish dishes. Vegetarians are catered for better each time we visit, although it is not always clear what is vegetarian and what is not - some simple "V" labelling would be useful. Lots of fresh fruit and ice cream for desserts.

For a change an upgrade to the a la carte dining outside beneath the gazebo with views over the pool and out to sea is a worthwhile experience - al fresco dining with food of a high standard and attentive service.

For relaxing in the sun there is a great variety of locations ranging from around the sea water pool at the upper level or beneath the trees on the terrace, on one of the two beaches, on the lawns in front of the bungalows or on the boardwalk fronting the taverna or around the harbour. The pool and beach areas were always clean and litter free.

The 2 beaches never got overcrowded, and sunbeds were always available. the beach runs into the sea at a shallow angle and you can walk out a good 15 metres without getting out of your depth. One of the beaches has a floating pontoon that you can swim out to and sunbathe. The blue flag beach is accessible to the public who come especially at the weekend, but this wasn't a problem to us.

There is a variety of water sport but it is a bit expensive. We always opt to take out a motor boat from the harbour for half a day for around 100 euros for 4 hours including fuel - highly recommended.

Leave some room after breakfast for the doughnut man with his trays of warm vanilla, chocolate or plain doughnuts - you will hear him coming!

Finally the spa - adults only - provides a break from the beach. This is free to all guests and includes a fully equipped gym, sauna, steam room and large jacuzzi area with water massage - as well as an indoor pool - there are treatments available if you have 90 euros spare for a facial or 500 euros for a 3 or 4 day course of treatments!

Overall for a relaxing stress free holiday I can think of very few places better to spend a holiday and we will certainly be going back.

If there was one thing I could change - it would be for the hotel to stay open a week longer in October to capture the English half term school holidays so we could slip in a quick trip before winter sets in.
