We have just spent a wonderful week at the Skiathos Palace Hotel. It sits high above the resort Koukounaries and offers a commanding view of the bay and across the Agean sea to mainland Greece. It is a well-run and friendly hotel with up to date facilities (our room had been recently updated). The pool and bar area are surrounded by a magnificent view and it’s a great place to spend time relaxing.

You can have either a bed and breakfast or half-board package. We took bed and breakfast and the breakfast was an excellent buffet with many options including a vast array of different cuisines including freshly cooked omelettes and other cooked foods such as fried eggs (with beautiful bright yokes) and sausages (with frankfurters and English style to choose from). I think I would have considered the half-board option in hindsight because eating out every evening on the island can get expensive and if the quality of the breakfast is anything to go by, I expect the evening buffet is very good.

The hotel is a great base from which to either use the local beaches or explore the island. It is around 6 miles from Skiathos town which can be reached by local buses or (one way) via a courtesy bus run by the hotel. The local Koukounaries resort has a number of bars and restaurants and is about a ½ a mile walk away.

Our room had almost everything you would expect in a modern 4-star hotel including a modern flat-screen TV (which we never turned on) and a very good shower. A minor point is that there are very few power points in the room, one for the TV and one each for bedside lamps so to plug your own things in you have to unplug one of these. There is a fridge containing a mini-bar from which you can purchase a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The little bottles of drinking water from the mini bar cost €1 each and there is a prohibition of putting your own stuff in the fridge which we thought was a little mean. It would have been a nice touch either to make the water complementary or simply to let guests buy and store their own water in the fridge. There weren’t any tea/coffee making facilities in the room.

Please don’t visit this hotel if you have any difficulty using steps. The hotel is on a total of 6 levels yet doesn’t have a lift. To reach the beaches you have to navigate some very tricky steps or make your way up/down the steep drive. The Hotel offers a courtesy bus down to Koukounaries beach which is only a few hundred metres away as the crow flies which says it all. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a problem for us but we are fit and mobile.

The Hotel also offers a free bus into Skiathos several times a day. However, this is a one-way service and the public buses back can get crowded at peak times. We were refused entry on one public bus because it was full. While I appreciate this is difficult, it would transform the service if the hotel could work out a system for return trips (the outgoing is pre-book only so I would have thought you could do a similar thing on the return trip).

The hotel has a tennis court and we used this on a couple of occasions. It cost €15 for a one-hour session including rackets and balls. We enjoyed the opportunity to play tennis but I have to say that the courts could do with some maintenance.

Despite the above honest suggestions, staying in this hotel was a wonderful experience for us. The location is truly magnificent and it sits by the best beaches on the island. It also gives access to a network of tracks up into the hills which can be explored either on foot or on two or four wheels. Skiathos is a beautiful green forested island with stunning views from up in the hills and because the island is so small, you are never far from help if you were to need it. At Koukounaries there is a beautiful nature reserve including a little lagoon just behind the beach and if you are lucky you can see rabbits playing as you walk around.

Great location and spectacular views. Nice team. Stunning beaches within walking distance. The public areas are beautiful, refurbished, clean and spacious. Nice pool but no lifeguard. There are upgraded rooms at an additional price with sea view, but not necessarily pleasant or cleaner. On the first floors there is a smell of mold ...
Old rooms, not well maintained, no
Always clean. Old beds and uncomfortable ... Old, worn towels... There is no elevator and you have to go up / down stairs to the restaurant and pool. There are rooms that are very far away and are at the end of the corridor. There is a small jimbore for children.
Those who come with family and children or young people -its nice. Not for those who come looking for pampering and comfort.
The price accordingly

We were only in Skiathos for one week and will definitely be going back as such a gorgeous island with so much more to explore. The skiathos palace hotel was lovely in such a perfect setting and the most beautiful views. The food was amazing and the staff so friendly and helpful. Looking forward to our next visit.

It is a 3 star hotel and nothing more.
The positive:
Beautiful setting on top of the hill. Excellent a la carte restaurant with excellent service.
Nice bar on the roof also with fantastic views and excellent service.
The negative:
Receptionists do not seem to understand and know about things and do not get things done.
The rooms - with an extra charge of 116£ for sea view - have limited sea views because of trees and bushes. We asked immediately if we could change room and were told to come back again and again but finally got a bit better view after 48 hours.
The 2 rooms we had were dirty, dusty and dirty not-washed floors. The second room had carpet, also dirty and quit a few ants lived in it which were crawling on the bedside tables and other places in the room.
The bathroom was not clean and neither was the balcony. We did not want to walk barefooted there.
The electricity went 3 mornings in a row so no shaving or drying hair.
No hairdryer (only from reception for a deposit) or make-up mirror.
The restaurant chairs are fallen apart and we had to swop them before sitting down. Wobbly tables. Chairs and tables should be replaced.
For a 5 star hotel you would expect orange juice and not squash for breakfast.
We didn't use the pool as there were babies in there with no nappies.
Nice private beach but you had to pay for sunchairs.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea views have limited views due to trees

From the minute we stepped out of the cab we immediately felt so welcome at this wonderful hotel and the welcoming atmosphere continued all week. Stunning sea views, great food, fantastic staff, an all round amazing holiday location! We are certainly planning a return trip next year!

Room Tip: All rooms have a lovely view, but if you want the stunning sea view you need to be sure to book this.
