Just returned from Skiathos which is a beautiful, green, and unique Greek island. We stayed at Muses Hotel for a week in the end of August 2012. We didn't expect the luxury as after spending fortune in June in Santorini where we got married, this time we went for a budget hotel. And we weren't disappointed at all! This is not the first time where we stayed at a three star Greek hotel so we knew what to expect. The room was very basic but there was everything what you need while you are on holiday. The only downside was the very tiny bathroom. The toilet seat is just next to a very tiny shower. We are both quite slim but sometimes we struggled with the space. The room is fitted with a fridge and air con. However it's not for free (a fridge €3 per day; air con €5 per day). Frankly speaking, the a/c should be for free as in winter we don't charge tourists for the heating (or maybe I'm wrong). The room was cleaned every day and the sheets/towels changed twice during our stay. The area around the hotel was nice and cleaned as well. The breakfast was very basic and we were quite disappointed that we couldn't get typical Greek breakfast. I mean fresh vegetables, fruits, olives or Greek cheeses. We go to Greece twice a year and we visit different islands, and every time there is a good choice of Greek food. Anyway, like some of the other guests, we brought our own tomatoes or fruits for breakfast and we were content:)
Having read some of the reviews I was concerned about mosquitoes. But luckily, I was only bitten three times while we were dining out! There were no mosquitoes in our room and to be honest with you, I didn't spot even one! I don't do creams or lotions against mosquitoes so even without that protection I wasn't bitten. My advice is to keep the windows closed while the light is on at night.
The beaches were the most beautiful I've ever seen! Shining golden sand, clear like crystal sea, and pine trees in the background...Amazing!
We visited Skaithos town very often by bus as the public transport was excellent and really cheap (€4 return per person).
We went twice for a boat trip to Skopelos and Alonisos (one with Nicholas and another one with Kasandra). Skopelos is a beautiful island that's why we visited it twice as two hours is not enough for exploring its beauty. Both trips were cheap (€10 and €15) and well recommended.
Dining out - the best food is served at Hera Taverna at Muses Hotel. We dined there 5 times and every time we were absolutely delighted! The chef is just marvellous! Whatever we had it was so tasty and fresh. Prices are reasonable as well although you have to be aware that Skiathos is a very expensive place comparing to other islands (even Santorini!). The staff was always friendly and smiled although they work very hard. For a change, twice we had dinner in Skathos town but we were let down. The food was tasteless.
Overall, we had a fabulous holiday and we are looking forward to coming back to Greece again!

Second time at the Muses. Staff friendly, accommodation clean and the island as a whole still a lovely place to visit. Restaurant is comparable to others and the pool bar is friendly. Ideally located for all the marvellous beaches within a short walk. Despite asking in advance we got one of the smaller rooms at the back of the complex again and without getting too personal you cannot sit on the loo without hitting the sink or tripping over the raised shower surround! The breakfasts unfortunately were monotonous with no imagination. If you need it there is wi-fi available if you ask for the password. My advice would be to contact the hotel direct before going to request a family room or one near the front of the complex. Contact details are;
E-Mail maria.karoumpa@hotmail.com
Phone 0030 24270 49438
We will book Skiathos again but most likely look elswhere to stay.

Room Tip: Contact the hotel direct.

I am very sorry to see that this lovely hotel has had it's great reputation sabotaged by 3 idiots (Tomx_55, Zivaki & evianamou). I doubt very much if they've ever actually stayed there! Last September (2011) we had our first holiday in Skiathos and stayed at The Muses. Koukounaries is beautiful and The Muses was everything we could have asked of it and more. It was just about the best holiday we have ever had (despite the first few days being wet!) Marula, Sophia and the rest of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very clean and are kept that way by the cleaners. Breakfast is continental (not traditional English...!) and is very good. PLEASE READ THE OTHER REVIEWS (AS THESE SEEM MORE GENUINE) BEFORE FORMING AN OPINION. We are actually going back to The Muses in 3 weeks time and cannot wait. If you want 5 star you should pay for it. If you want really great value for money you will not be disappointed with The Muses Hotel. We will write another review when we return at the end of September.

Just had a week in Muses Hotel and had a great time.
Downsides first
Breakfast was simple and the same everyday but ok for me , wife said maybe fresh tomatoes should be available. If you want a full English dont go to Greece stay at home or go to an English resort .Also the road outside can be noisy with mopeds going to and from the beaches
.
Upsides . We thought the staff were fantastic, a special mention to Sophia and Leah at the pool bar, pleasant hard working and made feel like friends and most importantly made feel like we were on holiday
Our room (108) was fine for us nice balcony and very clean. If you know what to expect in Greece you have no worries. We did take a mosquito plug in for the room and had no problems with them.

The restaurant was great and reasonable in price, and you can see the chefs working in the grill. If you go make sure you try the oven potatoes, so tasty.
Koukounaries beach can be busy , we walked to Maratha beach just around the next bay and it was wonderful. Walk to the far end away from the beach hut and meet the "Captain" sorting the sunbeds out( 7 euro for the day).
The Augustera Bar along the road is ok at night , playing music requests on the big screen

Just returned from my vacation and the experience we had from this hotel is the worst. The only good that this hotel have is the location. Other than that, they have terrible service, but manners (especially the owners) and terrible breakfast. I mean come on : 'boiled eggs every day?'

Never trust your vacation to this hotel...There is not welcome atmosphere, you have to carry your bags to your room when you arrive and when you live the hotel. To get to your room where you will have to pay 5 euros per day in order yo use the ac and plus 3 euros to use the small refrigerator.

Towels are changed every three days. Everyday we had to put the sheets on our beds, the cleaner did not have the time to do that??

Please pick a different hotel for your vacation guys..

I have never visited such a hotel.i am very dissapointed.first of all i have never faced worst behaviour ever.the owner is a stubit person.he made us feel anwelcome and he was very agressive to us with no reason.i have visited many hotels better than that and i have never faced anyrlthing like that.second the breakfast was terrible every day we had boiled eggs and the staff was not helpful.the most important for me is the good behaviour and they lacked.i strongly recommemd everyone not to visit this hotel ever.

Just back from a week at this dump. Let's be honest if it wasn't next to the best beach on the island this place would never survive as a business.

Concern first night when the Fire Alarm went off, NOBODY, STAFF nor guests moved for 10 minutes before someone wondered over, put a key in the alarm and turned if off, no invstigation, nothing!!!! hmmm

Was on a B & B package and the breakfasts were not fit to be fed to a dog. Bread stale as cardboard, tea was disgusting, and fruit was massive lumps of green watermelon, and Greek Yoghurt was actually tinned 'fromage fres,' dreadful!

In my view place should be named 'Mossies' as instead of homage to the nine Muses it was more like home to 9 million mosquitoes, courtesy of the lagoon just opposite.

Not sure which smelled worse, the lagoon or the toilets which smelled like only Greek toilets can smell, chalet maids did not appear to have been supplied with any disinfectant!!

On recommendation from fellow guests we ate one evening in the restaurant, assurred it was a different 'chef' from the breakfast cook.

I chose a simple Greek dish from the menu which appearred to have been cooked in a microwave. When I asked the waitress if it had been cooked in a microwave I suppose the only way to describe her reaction was to say,'she went off on one!!' I have visited many Greek islands eaten in many hotels restaurants, I love Greece and the Greek people but this reaction was outrageous, never experienced such rudeness.

Not surprisingly I suppose the two 'lattes' we orderred to finish the meal came us as expressos smelling like washing up water, hmmmmmmm

Strengths of the place were that there was an excellent bar in walking distance which served breakfast and lattes made with milk! Super beach a stroll away. If you are going to this place take a travel kettle for a decent cuppa, eat out, there are lovely restaurants close by and don't dare to ask any questions of the staff. Take a Fire Extinguisher just in case and plenty of Mosuito Repellent, oh and a peg for your nose if you want top use the toilets whilst staying there!

Sorry, I certainly won't be returning to this place.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in a different hotel
