“Charming hotel plus stunning beach = beautiful memories!”
Reviewed 14 September 2013

I was very surprised to read the review posted on 8th September. Judging by the date of posting, we must have stayed at Le Duc at exactly the same time and yet we had a fantastic stay there and a very different experience!

We were holidaying with another family - both parties had terrific, spacious rooms with character overlooking the beautiful gardens. We were not bothered at all by pool cleaning or external builders and the piped music referred to was incredibly subtle – only just audible and was quite pleasant as background music when you were sitting in the bar area in particular.

The staff could not have been friendlier or more accommodating – we all found it a perfect place to relax! And it did have ‘special character’ which will single it out in our memories in years to come.

Yes, the price tag is a hefty one, but I think that is often to be expected from holidays on small, exotic islands – there is always a price to pay for shipping in everything expected by the modern and often demanding traveller these days. And island life can often have its idiosyncracies (like the occasional dip in water pressure). I think you need to take this place for what it is - it’s not a glitz and glamour 5 star hotel (of the type you’d find in Dubai or Abu Dhabi) that is almost clinically perfect…instead, its charm is in its setting, character and atmosphere, ie subtlety over largesse!

Certainly, the food at the Café des Arts was absolutely superb and – for the 8 people in our party – we found the breakfasts and dinners to be very enjoyable.

Agreed – the internet access was a little unreliable from time to time, but I’m not sure you can blame the hotel for that.

We will remember Le Duc for its stunning beachfront (we have travelled extensively and this has to be one of the most stunning in our opinion)….the character of the hotel and grounds….and the warm welcome from the staff. We were sad to leave and would gladly return!

Baffled by all the rave reviews on TA for this one. In our experience, this was more of a 3-star hotel with a 5-star price tag.

The hotel gardens are lovely and the location in a relatively 'busy' part of Praslin is good. It's not easy to relax at the hotel itself due to noise from pool cleaning, external builders and the 90s pop music soundtrack that plays all day in the restaurant/pool/bar area. All rooms are centred around this area and lack soundproofing.

Despite the USD400 per night price tag, the hotel offers no complimentary bottled water, one hour of free internet a day (that may or may not work), only basic toiletries, and a breakfast that is mediocre for this price level.

The deceptively named honeymoon 'suite' is not a suite. There is no separate living area that would justify calling it a suite. It is basically a bedroom with a large bathroom and outdoor shower. It's not that different to a superior room. Rooms are comfortable and clean, but not luxurious.

Overall, Le Duc is overrated and overpriced. We did not experience the exceptional service other reviewers mention. Staff are a mixed bag (some wonderful, others horrible). Le Duc is not a bad hotel but it does lack that special something to justify the high rates. Wouldn't stay here again.

Room Tip: Stick to a superior room rather than a honeymoon suite.

We stayed here only for 2 nights and we loved it! We arrived quite early in the morning from Jo'burg and they kind enough to check us in right away. The room was huge and the bathroom had a wonderful bath tub. The breakfast in the morning was good too. The beach was just a 2-minute walk from the hotel and was spectacular. Definitely what I imagined Seychelles to look like!

The staff was extremely helpful and were always smiling and giving us great tips whenever we asked them. They even arranged us a private boat tour to Curieuse island where we saw giant tortoises! Overall, a great stay and excellent value for money!

Room Tip: None of the rooms have view, so any room is good!

Location: this beautiful hotel is situated at the Anse Volbert beach on the north of the island Praslin. You can reach the hotel by car - it´s around 15 minutes by drive from the airport, or by taxi.

Hotel: small, nice, romantic, pleasant, calm and really beautiful with amazing garden and pool. It has 28 rooms. Even if the hotel was fully booked (we were there during the Easter), it didn´t feel crowded.

Surroundings: hotel is located in a beautiful tropical garden, just 2 minutes from the Anse Volbert beach and Cafe des Arts restaurant. The centre of Anse Volbert is 5 minutes by foot and you can find there shops, restaurants, bank and a few ATM.

Renting a car: The best way how to discover the island is by the car. You can rent the car at the airport. We rented car from the Century Cars - you can find it directly at the airport near domestic flights arrivals. Really kind woman Eugenia helped us with everything. Moreover her brother Felix has a taxi, so he took us to the jetty and also to the airport. We rented a car for 3 days and we paied 45 eur/day. Definitely, if you decided to rent the car, choose one with authomatic transmission.

Accomodation: is nice, clean, pleasant, elegant. We had superior room with beutiful balcony and garden/pool view.

Breakfast: buffet style. There´s cold buffet wit cereals, cheese, ham, fresh fruits and juices and also hot buffet with eggs, bacon, etc.

Food: in this hotel, you have several choices. There´s restaurant with buffet dinne, but every evening you have thematic food - seafood, BBQ, menu, etc. But the best option in our opinion is to visit Cafe des Arts restaurant. We had 2 dinners there and it was the best food which we had in all Seychelles. You can find more information in our review of Cafe des Arts restaurant.

Drinks: you can have drinks in the bar. The bar is very nice and pleasant.

Service: really good everywhere and without any problems

Staff: very nice and helpful, especially the girls at the reception (by name we remember only Cynthia), all staff in the restaurant and Robert - owner of the hotel.

Advantages of this hotel:
- beautiful hotel with romantic and calm atmosphere
- comfortable and nice accomodation
- very good service and attitude of the staff
- romantic and quite hotel/location without crowds
- very nice bar and restaurant
- nice swimmingpool
- good and calm location
- very good food in the hotel and a few restaurants in surrounding
- free parking

Disadvantages of this hotel:
- prices are higher, like everywhere in Seychelles, but we think the quality was more then adequate
- not directly on the beach, but it is 2 minutes walk, so not a real issue

What you can do there:
- swimming in the pool or in the ocean
- there´s a turtle farm near the hotel
- trips around the island
- trips on the other islands - we were at Curieuse island

Our opinion: this was really good hotel in Seychelles with very good staff, services and with the best restaurant in all Seychelles - Cafe des Arts. We truly recommend.

What you should know:
- the best choice is to rent the car directly at the airport
- hotel is around 15 minutes by car fromt the airport
- hotel is directly in the village Anse Volbert, but roads on the island are very narrow so it´s a little bit dangerous to walk somewhere by foot or by bike

We stayed in le Duc during our honeymoon for 5 days and were incredibly satisfied. Upon arrival we were upgraded to a beautiful 'honeymoon suite' bungalow with beautiful decor, huge bathtub and shower, a nice veranda, and even an outdoor shower in the back yard. The room was gorgeous. I really enjoyed using the pool as well, and was glad that the beach and dive shop were a 5 minute walk away.

But the best part was by far and away the staff and service. They went far beyond the call of duty to make our stay exceptional, and were extremely friendly and helpful in every way. The hotel is owned by a Seychellian, and the local pride that his staff embodies is really inspiring. Apart from the dinners which we found a bit expensive for the quality, I would recommend this place hands down.

I think it's always difficult to share an holiday/trip experience, everybody have their taste and different expectations according to the age and character.
Having said that: my wife and I spent 12 days in this fantastic boutique, family running Hotel.
The Superior Room was comfortable and spacious, the garden quiet and always well kept, but what I will remenber for the rest of my life is the quality of the dinners we had; I can say that I never had in the same place and for so many days a different high grade menù, just great!
And if you want have also a romantic and elegant spot on the beach, try the opposite restaurant Cafe des Arts, the apotheosis of haute cuisine!
Everything thanks to the Director Mr. Robert Payet, his Family and all the Staff 100% Seychellois, all always present and friendly.
For surely, if we will the chance to come back to Seychelles, we will come back straight to "Le Duc".
Ciao Robert
