“Julie, Solihull. Beautiful location for exploring Bath”
Reviewed 20 November 2012

This hotel was booked as a surprise birthday treat for myself and three friends. The location was absolutely perfect with stunning views over the River Avon. We were staying in the "lodges" which were located just outside the main hotel building but these were clean, comfortable and had all the facilities we needed. The bathrooms had all been refurbished to a very high standard. The evening meal we had in the restaurant on the Saturday was delicious with plenty of choice and again, breakfast was of good quality and plenty to choose from. The staff were lovely and all very friendly. Would definately stay here again to explore more of the beautiful spa town.

We booked this hotel only the day before visit so got a very good rate. Our room was very small but overlooked the fields so view was lovely. We did have trouble with the patio door lock. The bathroom had been refurbished and we had plenty of soft white towels. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant, no complaints at all. Yes, the hotel does have a tired look about it and we didn't see the 'lodges' so can't comment on them. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice and freshly cooked (much better than some of the more expensive hotels that offer a buffet style breakfast). Overall, for what we paid, we were pleased with our visit. Do remember folks, this doesn't profess to be a five star hotel.

Room Tip: Judging by other comments, do not book a 'lodge' room.

Having just enjoyed a 2-day break in Bath, the Old Mill Hotel and Lodge provided a good and convenient place to stay, being situated just a few minutes drive east of the city centre.Bath is a fascinating place to visit, the whole city being a world heritage site. The architecture is stunning and the free walking tours offered from the Abbey square are fantastic.
Location and views were significant factors in choosing this particular hotel and these did not disappoint. Standing adjacent to a small toll bridge and being on the river bank, the place is peaceful and very picturesque. The former water wheel makes for a very attractive photo, the riverside gardens would be a lovely place in which to sit on fine days.
In writing this review I am conscious that my wife and I booked a very cheap deal, paying just £138 for 2 nights bed and breakfast. At less than £70 per night for 2 people the stay was excellent value for money. Any observations made about the hotel should take the price into consideration, this being similar to the rates charged by the budget chains for room only.
Our deal was for a 'superior' room with seating area. I guess the term is relative when set against the portacabin style lodge occupying the end of the car park. Indeed, the room fittings and furnishings were of an excellent standard and investment had clearly been made to try and create the impression of quality throughout. This would be fine were it not for the dimensions of the room. Put simply, it was tiny and quite cramped. The distance between the bed and the wall was about 12 inches on one side of the bed, with a gap of about 9 inches on the other corner. Fortunately, my wife and I are slim. People of larger build would find navigating the bedroom and finding room to dress and change a formidable challenge!
The 'superior' room was also advertised as having a seating area. This comprised one armchair at the foot of the bed with just about sufficient legroom for one person to sit. The description was accurate, so long as we were happy to take turns. The room looked out,as promised, on the river. It was, indeed, a lovely view. Had the weather been a little kinder we could have opened the patio doors and sat outside on the veranda or the decking area using the garden chairs provided. So summer stays would be rewarded with a lovely view and very pleasant seating. Other good points included a bathroom with modern fittings and separate shower, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryer, iron and ironing board and fully stocked mini bar and fridge. Drawer and cupboard space was good and even a trouser press was provided.
The breakfast (included in the price) was excellent. Cereals and dried fruit, yoghurt and fruit juice, plentiful toast and a good selection of hot food which was cooked to order, all made for a great start to the day. One morning I chose the smoked salmon and scrambled egg and was surprised at the quantity of salmon served - absolutely delightful!
The restaurant serves evening meals at its 'Il Mulino' restaurant. We did not eat in so cannot comment on the quality but the menu offered is varied and prices reasonable - although I question why it is necessary to add a £2.10 cover charge - this smacks of fleecing customers somewhat. Similarly, whilst wifi Internet access is available this is not provided free of charge and the hourly rate seems quite high.
The room was cleaned while we were out during the day and towels changed daily.
Throughout Bath car parking is clearly a challenge so the on site car parking s a real bonus. The parking area might be tight for navigating but remember this is a city in which many hotels will have no off street parking at all.
For the price paid, we felt our stay was good value for money and we would be very happy to visit again - particularly if we could visit in summer and make the most of the lovely garden and river views. We would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a convenient base for a short stay in the lovely city of Bath but if you are making a booking please do not expect 'superior' to mean 'spacious'.

A hotel right on the River Avon next to a Toll Bridge and Weir, with fantastic views. Ten minutes drive to Bath. Cannot get much better location wise. We requested a river view room and were obliged. Hotel was fine albeit looking a little tired in places. The exterior looked in need a of a bit of a tidy and the reception, lounge and restaurant areas needed refreshing or refurbishing. Rooms in the hotel itself, clearly had been recently refurbished and were excellent. Whilst not experiencing the interiors of the rooms in the annex / lodge they did not look particularly appealing perhaps a good move to pay the extra for a superior room which, was very well appointed. Breakfast was good with plenty of options. The general standards of service were adequate, however the couple of staff who were cheerful stood out!. The hotel location and room were both excellent but the place seems to be failing to fulfill its potential and could be so much better.

Room Tip: Go for a room in the main hotel. The higher graded rooms are a must. Request for a river view

Thank you for your kind words and I shall make sure all of my team read them.
We have many satisfied customers and its a shame that they all don't take a leaf out of your book and put their views on tripadvisor.
I promise I will get some Grappa in for when you next stay with us.

Where do I start! I have stayed here on business a few times over the last year and always encountered problems however this latest stay has to be the worst and as such I shall never be returning! The manager of this hotel should not be allowed to manage anything! His incompetence and attitude is shocking and with the exception of the young lady at reception I am unimpressed by most of the staff! The rooms in the lodge which are outside are so small you have to climb the bed to get from one side to another! The heating is in on full or doesn't work, the windows don't have locks and was very unsecure and anyone could have got in. The bed was old uncomfortable and bedding was as bad! The restaurant is shocking when it comes to service! My colleague ordered risotto with chicken! She had a huge piece of gristle in there and couldn't eat it. When this was pointed out to the waitress the response was " sorry that's how we serves it!" " but can I get you a desert instead?"! We had warm bread instead of toast for breakfast and it was an I convenience to change this for them! The most infuriating part is when we raised this on departure the young lady clearly wanted to help but the manager basically told us "not to stay again!l"
To be clear anyone who may think I am someone who expects too much, please read my other reviews! I can 100% assure you I would never write a negative review without absolute grounds to do so!!! An for those of you have enjoyed your stay at his hotel with no issues!! You are very lucky indeed!

This hotel is shocking! When we arrived we were placed in 'lodge' rooms which were tiny box rooms akin to a seedy motel.

The bed was uncomfortable, the first night was freezing, no spare blanket or instruction on how to call room service.

Dinner was horrific, the waiter had to check the order 3 times and still got dishes wrong. I had the chicken risotto which tasted like hospital food, huge chunks of chicken including a grisly joint. The waitress responded with 'that's how we serve it!'

The second night I the room was so hot I had to sit with the window open at 2.30am to try and cool it down. Totally unsafe as a ground floor room where the window opens wide. I had to stay awake to wait for the room to cool.

My colleague addressed these problems with the manager upon check out and he was very rude, we were charged in full for everything.

Hair dryer was good though. That's about it.
