“Paradise + Wedding”
Reviewed 11 August 2011

We have just returned from Porta del Mar Villas and our experience was unbeatable. Beautiful location.... paradise and the Villas are exquisite. Our daughter was married at the villas on August 1st and it was a wonderful wedding and reception. The Rigas family were so accomodating and helpful and the wedding went without a hitch. We will certainly return to Porta del Mar and now look on the family as friends. Thank you to Tasos, Pavlina, Kostas and Elina from the bottom of my heart xxxxxxxxxxx

Totally loved Porta del Mar - the stone villas are set in pretty gardens with direct access to a private beach, which is safe and sandy, ideal for families. Lovely views out to Kefalonia. Sunbeds, parasols provided, and canoes! The bar sells drinks and snacks, with a good choice of homemade food for breakfast or lunch, there's usually a barbeque once a week, and a weekly pizza evening, where you add your choice of toppings and Tasos cooks it for you in the stone oven. There are a couple of good local tavernas within walking distance, and a small supermarket. The family who run this are great, hard-working, and always friendly and helpful - thank you Tasos, Pavlina, Kostas and Eleni - hope to see you again xx

This is our 3rd trip to Porta del Mar and we have just booked to return next year. For us, it is the perfect holiday and we can feel ourselves unwinding after another busy year. Having found it via the internet, we still cannot believe how beautiful it is and all other holidays in Greece pale into insignificance after staying with Tasos and his family. The villas are lovely and the setting is perfect- all the villas look out onto beautiful gardens, full of bougainvilla, the grass scattered with sunbeds that are immaculately kept. The views are beautiful, as you sit overlooking the sea on the home made pizza evenings, waiting for your pizza to come out of the outside oven and watching the sun go down over Kefalonia. We love the feeling of chatting to all of Tasos' family and they are always around with help and conversation...and even the occasional memorable boat trip. The food is fantastic and much comes from the veg garden by the villas; tomatoes like you've never tasted before. Pavlina is a wonderful cook and makes the best courgette pie!
In the evenings, if there isn't a pizza or barbeque on, we strolled 2 mins up the road to the Karras grill where the filled pittas are only 2 euros and the 'cake of Zante' is very tasty! The taverna along the beach is also good for calamari and the bar with the pool, near the supermarket, along the coast road- 15 mins walk, v pleasant, has fab toasties and bruschetta and you can stay in the pool all afternoon if you want.
Wonderful, wonderful holiday. Thankyou Tasos, Pavlina, Elina and Kostas- again.
Judith- York.

Fantastic time had by young and old at Porta Del Mar. Tascos, Pavlina, Eleni and Costa welcomed us to their wonderful villas, we booked 5 villas and all the villas were comfortable and wonderfully traditional.
The grounds were well kept and flowers.trees and shrubs absoloutly beautiful. Pond with resident turtle a real hit with the children and also the big kids. Must not forget Big Eyes the most beautiful cat on all of the Greek Islands.
The beach was very safe for the children and just down the steps from the gardens. The bar was well stocked also breakfasts and lunches very well received. Good time was had by all at the Pizza and Barbeque Nights.
The highlight of our holiday had to be Julie and Fim's wedding. Pavlina decorated the gardens and villas with ribbons, netting , bows and lanterns, everywhere looked beautiful. Wedding under the gazebo was stunning, photos are absolutly beautiful. The whole family were involved with wedding celebrations they could not do enough for us. Wedding meal and reception was 100% enjoyed by all guests.
We will be going back to Porta Del Mar in the future, hopefully for a reunion. Would recommend Porta Del Mar for a relaxing holiday

We felt relaxed and comfortable from the moment we arrived. The family are so lovely and will do anything to make your holiday enjoyable. You can hide away in one of the little coves overlooking the sea with a drink and some wonderful homemade food. Or you can join in with the other guests who all seemed to be as happy as we were to be there. Look for the lunchtime special menu it was the best food we had on the island. The beach was also lovely and clean and lots to keep you amused. Gardens also well kept.

I would like to go back even though I don't like returning to the same place twice. I am very tempted to book again. Would recommend to my friends.

Thank you for a very enjoyable holiday from Julie & Tim at The Hokey Cokey Party Shop, Haslemere

My husband and I stayed at Porta del Mar for his birthday. The villa was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the owners had decided to go on hoiday and we were left there with their two grown-up children, who were pleasent, but did not know how to cook. When we arrived it was 9pm and we asked if they 'did' food. The daughter told us 'not really', but showed us a local taverna only a 2 minute walk away, which was very basic, with a television blaring, however the food was good, if a bit expensive. The following morning I went to the nearby shop to buy some essentials, and discovered that a litre of milk was nearly 2 Euro's. I actually live in mainland Europe, in a country with the same minimum pay as Greece, and yet I pay 57 cents for milk, so go figure! It was 4.95 Euro's for a pack of butter (1.29 at home), and 1.20 for two bread rolls ( 50 cents at home). After we had been there for 4 days we discovered a menu on the bar, it transpires that they do 'do food'. We promptly ordered 2 cooked breakfast. We waited nearly an hour for them and they were cold (we think that each item on the plate had been individually cooked and transferred to a cold plate awaiting the next item) . The beans were decanted direct from the tin to the plate and had not been heated at all! The owner's son Costas, informed us that he likes British people because they drink a lot, and that's where they really make their money...at 7.80 Euro's for a Jack Daniels & Coke, I am not surprised. On booking our holiday we were offered the chance to book a taxi transfer from the airport for 30 Euro's, however we discovered that if you book this yourself direct with the taxi firm it is infact 15 - 20 Euro's....again more profit being made from the tourist! On the day of my husbands birthday I explained to Costas that I would like to take my husband to a restaurant 2 miles away for a meal and could he arrange transport for us, to which he told me that it costs 10 Euro's each way! As it was a nice evening we walked there, and the restaurant owner kindly gave us a lift back. The beach was beautiful, however the entrance to it was filthy....litter, rotting vegetation, etc. it would have taken a couple of hours to tidy, and would have looked so much more welcoming. Maybe if the owners had been there we would have been happier with our stay, but they chose to go on holiday themselves, even though they had accepted our booking.
Zakynthos has clearly fallen on hard times, with parts of roads collapsing, buildings in ruin, rubbish piled up at the side of the road. It was a real shame to see. We have visited Zakynthos many times in the past, but sadly shall not be back. We came away from the island feeling as though we had been seen only as a means to extort the most money possible. The prices were ludicrous, what you would expect to pay in Paris, London or any other city that has an excellent infrastructure. Zakynthos however does not offer any of the things that one equates with these prices. To be completely honest for less money we could have had so much more elsewhere.

Room Tip: For hot water you must run the water for 5 minutes

We spent two weeks at porta del mar and it was the best holiday we have had in years. We had our twin 3yr old boys with us so keeping them entertained and out of trouble is usually quite challenging! Not here though! The communal area in the centre of the complex allowed the boys freedom away from the villa, but we could still keep an eye on them. There was also a separate grassed area with a swing, slide and some other toys.
The beach is perfect for small children - sandy and gently sloping - the kids had the time of their lives building sandcastles. The Rigas family are very friendly but also offer excellent service- always willing to help with whatever we needed. Other families at the villas were very friendly and it was a shame to say goodbye to them all. Most people we met were returning guests, and we will certainly be returning as soon as we can.
