“Beautiful place, beautiful owners...I wish I owned it!”
Reviewed 23 September 2010

This place is a real gem, hidden well away from the hustle and bustle but, if you choose, you can get to anywhere really easily.
Tasos, Pavlina and family are so very friendly, nothing is too much effort for them. I am saddened to read the only poor review by 'Alpha something or another. ' They are so, so off the boil it is untrue. I suspect espionage...see what you think! =)
The villas are first class, classic Greek build with first class cleanliness and thoughtful decoration- but not over done.
We stayed in two villas as the larger villa was taken for the first week. However as soon as it was free, Tasos and family moved all our gear whilst we were out. How very kind.
I write this retrospectively, as the first time we went was July 2007. It was our honeymoon. On arrival, Tasos met us at the airport, offered to go to the shop for us and had left a beautiful bottle of bubbly for us in our bedroom.
Each room is air conditioned(free) and a welcome cool relaxed feel from what can be a very hot day.
The villas are arranged around a sort of horse shoe shape, making the most of the inviting and beautiful turquoise sea, only feet from your from your front door. ( NO pool-??? Please- who needs a pool when you have such a fantastic beach and ocean to play in.)
The sea has such a gentle gradient on it, that it is ideal for young children and adults alike. If you wish to swim out about 50 meters, the sea gets deeper and drops away , slowly to about 10 meters or so. Nice and cool for some swimming.
On booking again, Tasos recognised our names immediately and recounted some of our antics. Such a friendly family, it would be a shame if it were not co habited with them. They are discreet but there if you want them.
We hired a car through Tasos' contacts and it was delivered to the villa the next morning. He armed us with some secret spots about the island and we set off. That day we found some of the most stunning and amazing spots that no one knew of. As the coach tours trundled to the well worn areas in the south, we enjoyed a stunning fjord system on the West coast...thanks to Tasos. - It's out there, just got to find it.
The food and drink is gorgeous at Porta Del Mar. Yes it's a little more expensive...but wouldn't you expect it to be??
Nearby, are a selection of about 4 tavernas. They are small, charming and well priced. The sea food one, about 10-15 mins walk is just brilliant- overlooking the beach.
You can drive around the island, in half a day... a day is better though, taking time to enjoy the odd iced coffee here and there, take a few snaps, have a swim etc. The north is much quieter than the south and has a selection of little villages to muse through. The south is not without charm, but is very busy at the height of the season- like anywhere. If you want it, it's there though.
Suitable for all ages i'd say, save if you're after a nightclub holiday. This is not that...just a relaxing, welcoming and beautiful setting.
This is a really charming and well priced intimate complex of quality villas. The family are so very lovely, the setting will surprise you and amaze you in equal doses. Once bitten....
* Just a footnote bout the airport. Like most Greek airports they are small and a little chaotic at peak season. You feel obliged to stand in the snaking queue arranged by tour reps. My advice is 'DON'T. If you've booked here, you've no need to queue in this in and out of airport snaking queue. If you do, like us, you'll nearly miss your flight home. You cannot hear the tannoy's when you've exited the airport to queue in a marquee style make shift canopy. My advice? be non British for a little bit, get to the front of the queue as soon as you can! :)

We have just returned from a week's very relaxing stay at porta del mar. We completely endorse all the other positive comments from other reviewers (and we think the one bad reviewer must have been staying somewhere else because it's so inaccurate).
The views are incredible, the villas are private, clean and cool & the service is second to none.
We spent our holiday very lazily switching between beach, garden, bar and the local tavernas - all within a stone's throw from the villas.
We also felt really welcomed by tasos, pavlina, eleni & costas. We really enjoyed the pizza and BBQ and met some really lovely people also staying in the villas.
I would thoroughly recommend staying at porta del mar

I was initially concerned about the comments that alpha36 had made I need not have worried. Taso, Pavlina and their lovely daughter Elina were warm welcoming and gracious hosts. They provided an efficient and friendly service, they were availabe from the moment we woke to the last guest retiring. At no time during our 10 day stay was the bar unmanned. Every day the cottages were cleaned, bins emptied, rooms swept and every 3 days we had fresh linen. We stayed in two different cottages and both were beautiful in different ways. The other cottages were occupied by young families, young and middle aged couples and two large mixed age family groups. What can i say about the views, absolutely amazing, beautiful clear water stretching to Kefalonia and beyond all enjoyed from the beautiful stone cottages and attractive gardens. Porta del Mar has a very relaxed feeling where you can mix with other guests or enjoy your own private space. The bar area provides a friendly sociable area (there were quiet a few friendly dart matches and table tennis games), there is also a quiet reading area with books in different languages and many areas where one could just sit with a cold beer or a chilled glass of wine and enjoy the views. Some nights we enjoyed a meal or a drink on our private terrace as did others. Everyone enjoyed the pizza and barbecue nights. The water is so very clear with a lovely soft sand beach and cooling breezes. We snorkled and saw many fish even an octopus. My husband enjoyed paddling out on the free boats/canoes each morning. This family run a successful business, Porta del Mar meets many peoples ideal holiday as it caters for many different holiday styles. We wanted a holiday where we did nothing but relax and the resort enabled this but if you want to see more and do more the options are there also. It caters to all ages and styles some enjoyed a short taxi ride to a busy nightlife but those looking for a quieter evening were able to have a pleasant meal /drink within walking distance. I have no reservation in recomending Porta del Mar to anyone considering staying at this delightful beautiful friendly resort.

An absolute perfect honeymoon and most likely the best vacation we've ever had. Porta del Mar is a secluded getaway that will strip away a years worth of rat race tension within a day. The entire property was beautiful....flowers, massive palms, banana plants...i must have spent hours gazing at the hummingbirds collecting nectar from the hibiscus flowers on our terrace (while i lazily consumed my own nectar: Callinico- Ampelo Ravdi....quite a nice white wine we found at a local vineyard).
Compliments to Tasos and family for creating this gem with an impressive attention to detail. We've been back for more than 2 weeks now and people are still commenting on how relaxed we look.

Last year was wonderful and we spent this year counting down to our next visit, with the bonus of knowing how lovely Porta del Mar is. We were welcomed back as friends, but nothing is too much trouble- our children are completely safe and therefore able to have a little bit of independence and we would often find them chatting away to the owners and their family, never being made to feel that they were in the way. I walked around the complex before we left, trying to soak everything in before the return to reality, and saw Dimitri playing cards with one family of guests and small children, being taught a new game-!-, Elena making fresh tomato sauce for the pizza evening from their own vegetable patch, Pavlina busy at the bar, Tasos buliding up the fire for the pizza oven and Costas- well, we have to excuse him this year as he was away on National Service! This is a place where you can see new guests visibly unwind when they arrive and there is a very lovely mix of friendliness and efficiency: a perfect recipe for a holiday. Oh, and that reminds me- please can Pavlina send me her recipe for Greek courgette pie- although, it probably won't taste the same when it's not eaten under lanterns on a warm Zante evening....

Hi Judith 97 and thanks a lot for your nice words!
Pavlina finally found the recipe for her Greek courgette pie and here it is:

PAULINA’S DELICIOUS COURGETTE PIE!!

Quantities for 4-6 large portions (non-stick baking dish diameter 28cm)
Ingredients:
• 2 mugs of courgettes which have been grated into a colander and squeezed& drained to release the moisture
• 1 mug of feta cheese
• 1 mug of yellow cheese
• ¼ mug of olive oil
• 1 big onion-grated
• 3 eggs
• Fresh mint, parsley, dill: little of it-chopped
• Salt, pepper
Process:
1. Mix all the above together in a bowl
2. Add 2 mugs of rice flour
3. Mix altogether with your hands (believe me it has better results!)
4. Grease a non-stick baking dish
5. Sprinkle base with very fine dried bread crumbs
6. Put mixture in dish
7. Flatten with hand-as the oil bubbles up, sprinkle with more crumbs
8. Bake in medium oven for half-3/4 hour until golden.

Hope you will enjoy it very much! Next July I hope you will make one for the bbq here!
Love,
Tasos

I suppose I am writing this review in response to the one from Alpha 36 who clearly did not stay at the same place that we did. I have read Tasos' reply and can only think how hurt Pavlina and himself must have felt upon reading it. This was our third trip to Zakynthos, previously we had stayed in the south of the island in a stone villa in Gerakas. We thought that we had found our bit of heaven there, but our stay at Port del Mar showed us another side of the Island. The stone villas are set in beautiful surroundings, that reflect the amount of time and thought that has gone into them. There are so many beautiful places to sit and relax with a glass of wine or later in the evening with an Amaretto. The villas provide exactly what you need for a stay like this - unless you really want to be cooking a full meal at night!!!!! Nooooo!!! I too had a problem with the beds being hard, but we mentioned this to Tasos one morning and by our return that afternoon the mattress had been changed (So what's the problem???) The barbecue evening was lovely and gave us the chance to sit and talk to prople from all over Europe, which we probably wouldn't have done had we stayed in a basic 'apartment'.
We travelled as a couple and hired a car for the fortnight that we were there as we have done before. On our return, after a long day, Porto del Mar was like an oasis of calm. Perhaps if you think PDM is not for you then you might be happier with the many varied delights of nightlife and of course superior accommodation in say.....Laganas!
