“Peaceful location”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

The location of this hotel is lovely. Being situated on its own marina there was always something going on, yet it was very peaceful. Our double room was very spacious, with the balcony overlooking the marina. The bed was very comfortable. Decor is becoming a bit tired and the bathroom could have done with a makeover ( some mildew on the grouting, slightly rusty shower rail & light fitting) but everything was spotlessly clean.
The main areas of the hotel are bright and spacious. The lounge is beautiful, with lovely views over the marina. The restaurant has a conservatory area which is perfect for breakfast - and, of course, you can also sit outside if you wish. Food was beautifully cooked.
The swimming pool is not very big, but there is a small beach next to the marina which is ideal if you have children. There is also a walk from the hotel, around the point to the next bay, which is very pretty and calm.
The staff were all very efficient, friendly and helpful.
We had two nights here and we wish it had been longer!
One drawback - you have to pay for wifi!!! Why, in this day and age? Otherwise, a very relaxed, peaceful stay.

Room Tip: Choose a room upstairs, overlooking the marina.

Location,Staff,Food,Bar,Rooms all excellent. Stayed in a Loft room which we couldn't fault. Yes it is a little tired but work is in progress. It's not Kims at Toowoon Bay but we aren't paying thousands only hundreds for a weekend. All in all still a lovey setting (nothing is better then water, boats and sand) Do visit.

Room Tip: Can't fault Loft rooms. All have views.

We have stayed at this hotel on many occasions over the years. Our last visit was some years ago and the buildings have deteriorated since then, even though the prices are still on the high side.
We were informed that the new owners have plans to extend and renovate the complex. This is not before time and we would not return in its present condition.
Of course the views and location don't change. Port Stephens is still one of our favourite holiday destinations.
The restaurant still has an excellent chef and the meals are very tasty. The breakfast and choice of food is excellent.
The beds are comfortable but more attention needs to be given to the smaller things like the toiletries and choice of TV channels.
There are lovely grounds to walk in and a walk by the marina is always pleasant. The swimming pool is big enough so that even having a large number of swimmers doesn't become unpleasant.

My family enjoyed our stay at the anchorage, perfect location and although the room seemed a little bit dated it was still comfortable and spotless.
The only negative comment I could make is about the foxtel there were only two channels available and they were both sport,I would not have noticed but since I was stuck in the room for a whole day and night due to my child having a fever, foxtel would have come in handy.
Overall great place I have already recommended my friend to make a booking when she visits nelsons bay in the next couple of weeks.

HI Sofia,

Thank you for your positive feedback after your recent stay with us.

I understand your comments regarding the TV and the selection of channels. We are actually about to upgrade our TVs and the contract we have with Foxtel and other entertainment suppliers to ensure that we have your situation catered for. We understand that holidays do not always go to plan and having great entertainment in the room is vital.

Thanks again for your comments and also for recommending us.

Kind regards
Kent Warren

We stayed as a family of 4 at Anchorage recently & thought it was fantastic. The views were awesome, we had direct access to the little marina & the sunsets were amazing. Staff were friendly & helpful & I found everything to be very clean & tidy.

My only suggestion would be to have more comfortable bedding. A sheet and flat blanket aren't very cosy (a doona would be better) & there wee no spare blankets in the cupboard if we got cold. Also, there was only one small soap & one lot of toiletries for our stay for a family of four, probably needed a few ore supplies. Other than these small issues, everything else was of high standard & we will definitely be back.

Thanks for a lovely stay :)

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your positive comments and some valuable feedback.

We will be replacing the beds when we refurbish each of the rooms. With regard to the toiletries, this is great feedback and I have passed this onto our housekeeping team to review when we are preparing the rooms for our new guests.

Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Kind regards

We have been to this hotel many times now under the previous owners "Peppers Anchorage", now it is owned by the West Hotels apparently? We just keep coming back, and its about to be upgraded, which is really fantastic as it is tired it is in desperate need of an over haul, paint, curtains new bathrooms etc! But in saying this we still love to stay here the beds are King Size which is wonderful and they are so so comfortable. And the building and location is really so beautiful set upon the Anchorage Marina over looking magnificent moored yachts and the gorgeous waters of Corlette/Nelson Bay, and which so very often have a group of gorgeous dolphins swimming by just to top it all off!

I would give this 5 stars normally but as it is now at a stage of such desperate upgrade 4 stars is the maximum I could give until the actual upgrade, which we have been told is now in full swing with the Winter months now upon us, which is very exciting. The only problem is we were told with the upgrade it will now cost an extra at least $65.00 per night, which would take the average nightly rate to over $325.00 there about! Hopefully they will have specials on and it wont become a corporate resort only!

Their breakfast buffet is really great, one of the best you could get, all very fresh and clean it is best to get a stay that includes breakfast as it is well worth it!

Hi,

It is exciting, we are well underway with our refurbishments and the improvements we are making are looking great!.

We will complete the refurbishment building by building, so the impact on our guests will be minimal.

We understand our guests love to come back and it is not in our vision to turn this property into a corporate hotel only. Naturally, there will be changes in pricing when we complete the rooms - but we want to maintain our value for our guests. Our averages rates will not be as high as you mentioned.

Thank you for your positive comments and we look forward to welcoming you back again.

Kind regards
Kent Warren

We stayed at the Anchorage last week for 3 nights. The location and view is amazing - overlooking the marina and bay - just gorgeous! Check in was easy and fast, and the staff (Lisa) was friendly and helpful. We thought our room was great, decorated nicely and very comfortable. It was a good size too - more than enough room for the two of us. The only negative would be that the bathroom was very out-dated. The tiles and grout were grubby and old and the bath/shower was small. We definitely wouldn't have relaxed in the bath the way it was, and the shower was ok for me but too short for my husband.

They were renovating the block next to ours during our stay which caused some noise which was a little annoying but as we were there mostly over public holidays and weekends it didn't impact us too much. If you want a newer bathroom, try and request to stay in the newly renovated block (not yet complete but should be done soon).

We had massages at the spa, they were good but my therapist brought her dog into the treatment room!?!? I didn't realise until half way through and then felt a little awkward asking her to remove it so I didn't say anything. Afterwards I thought I probably should've said something as I don't really think it's appropriate for a dog to be in a beauty spa.

The buffet breakfast was ok - not great. We ate there once and then found a place in town that we ate at the rest of the time. We had our last night's meal at Merrett's - the restuarant on site. It was very expensive for what you get, the food was ok but not outstanding. My husband probably enjoyed it more as he loves seafood, my meal was a little bland and unexciting - especially for the amount you pay for it.

Overall, we really enjoyed our time at the hotel and would recomment it and return if in the area again.

Room Tip: Request the newly renovated block (300's) for a fresh, clean bathroom and updated bedroom.

Hi Sophie,

Thank you for your positive comments, I have passed on your feedback to Lisa who was very excited to receive it.

I have also discussed your comments with our chef. We are about to change the menu as another season is almost upon us. We are confident that the changes we make will be fresh and a little more hearty to reflect the season.

Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Kind regards
