Anchorage Port Stephens

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We recently had two nights at Anchorage which is ideally located on the picturesque water’s edge of Corlette Point.

Our room was on the ground floor with its own outdoor patio and looked out over both the waters of Port Stephens and the Anchorage Marina.

The room itself was very spacious (with a king bed), although some of the furnishings were a bit tired and the bathroom was in need of a makeover, although shower pressure was excellent. Having said that, the room was very clean and it is also worth mentioning that the owners are currently in the process of working through the refurbishment of all rooms within the complex in various stages.

A couple of issues that management should consider addressing are the fact that there were no instructions in the room on how to use the TV & internet (had to contact reception) and there was also no TV channel listing. Also, whilst Wi-Fi is available in the rooms, the cost is totally exhorbitant (minimum half day $15; 1 day $30) with not even an hourly rate available. In this day and age, most progressive places around the world are now offering such a service at no cost.

Within the complex, there is the Captains Bar lounge area which overlooks the marina and water and is ideal for relaxation and / or a night cap, whilst the restaurant (Merretts Restaurant) offers superb fine dining. My wife and I enjoyed an absolutely wonderful three course meal, however it should be noted that bookings are essential.

Staff service throughout our stay could not be faulted, whilst parking is readily available.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and once all rooms have been renovated, would strongly recommend. It is also hoped Management address the TV and Wi-Fi matters mentioned above.

Room Tip: Suggest request a newly refurbished room with water views

Helpful staff when allocating a room to suit my elderly traveling companion heralded
a very enjoyable stay at The Anchorage. Large, well appointed room with wonderful
little garden space overlooking the stunning marina. Parking virtually at the door made
access easy. Dinner at "Merretts" restaurant was delicious as was the included breakfast
next morning. All in all, a highly recommended hotel, quietly undergoing a $6 million
refurbishment with all rooms expected to be completed by Christmas 2014 - I will
be back!!

My daughter and her now husband selected The Anchorage to hold their wedding.
This was a fantastic choice.
Location, scenery and accommodation was wonderful.
All the staff were fantastic.
This place is more of a resort then a motel.
Many guests at the wedding stayed for the weekend or longer and all were very pleased and complimentary regarding their accommodation.
The room was quiet, very clean and comfortable. Nice bar and breakfast was good.
Plenty of (free)parking.
For a peaceful weekend away or for a special function this is a great place.

Room Tip: Take your pick. Upstairs rooms have balconies, ground floor units have nice outdoors areas.

My husband and I stayed here overnight to attend a Family Wedding. Fell in love with this place the minute I opened the curtains in our room, what a view! We really enjoyed having a cuppa outside our room on our little deck overlooking the water front. The room was lovely, the bathroom could do with a bit of an update but was still OK for use. The pillows on the bed were in need of replacing - your head went straight through them they may as well have not be there.

The staff were EXCELLENT!

Will be coming back for a longer stay and bringing our telescope as we are avid star gazers and the night sky was so very clear.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a Ocean view

We recently had a shortstay at The Anchorage, Corlette situated on the shores of Nelson Bay. The suites have water views and ours was perfectly placed to see the sunrise each morning. The suites are tastily appointed with comfortable queen bed and bathroom. Recently refurbished. There is a pool and spa area in front of Merretts Restaurant - fine dining. Some common lounge areas for those who want it otherwise can be very private. Salamander shopping centre is only 5 mins away.

Room Tip: Ground level or loft suites available but all have water views.

My partner and I stayed at The Anchorage in a standard room. The service was good and the room large and comfortable with views of the harbour. The bathrooms are outdated but I understand they are in the process of updating things. Unfortunately our stay was soured by the fact there was construction in the building next to us (not the best thing to wake up to or overlook) and the fact that we gave them some negative feedback and then received a phone call telling us we were "unfair." Overall the place is nice but overpriced based on the listed room rates, we have stayed elsewhere in Port Stephens and would choose to in the future.

The location of this hotel is lovely. Being situated on its own marina there was always something going on, yet it was very peaceful. Our double room was very spacious, with the balcony overlooking the marina. The bed was very comfortable. Decor is becoming a bit tired and the bathroom could have done with a makeover ( some mildew on the grouting, slightly rusty shower rail & light fitting) but everything was spotlessly clean.
The main areas of the hotel are bright and spacious. The lounge is beautiful, with lovely views over the marina. The restaurant has a conservatory area which is perfect for breakfast - and, of course, you can also sit outside if you wish. Food was beautifully cooked.
The swimming pool is not very big, but there is a small beach next to the marina which is ideal if you have children. There is also a walk from the hotel, around the point to the next bay, which is very pretty and calm.
The staff were all very efficient, friendly and helpful.
We had two nights here and we wish it had been longer!
One drawback - you have to pay for wifi!!! Why, in this day and age? Otherwise, a very relaxed, peaceful stay.

Room Tip: Choose a room upstairs, overlooking the marina.
