“lauri a our return to nidd hall after 6 years”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

our new year break at nidd hall was enjoyable on arrival we had a nice welcome the room was warm and comfortable the food was very good as was the entertainment but like so many other guests we found that every evening the best positioned seats in the concert room was previously reserved at an extra charge and on new years eve all 5 rows of the best front facing seats were previously reserved this caused bad feeling among many guests also there was not enough bar staff and we had to que in a line quite a while to buy our drinks
overhaul we enjoyed all the facilities of our new years break but we would not book a warners break again if the unnecessary reserved seat policy was in operation

Room Tip: not necessary to upgrade

Thank you for spending your break with us and I was pleased that you had a great time but were disapointed that people had arranged a celebration ViP Table.

The VIP table celebration experience is advertised in all our Warner Leisure brochures and was new back in 2010. This was introduced from guest feedback and comments and has been received extremely well from guests who are celebrating a special occasion and want to continue that special evening by having a reserved dressed table in the Pavilion Theatre. As numbers are limited this makes this a lovely gift for someone to purchase.

Kind regards

Julie

What a disappointment our New Year break at Nidd Hall Hotel, Harrogate, turned out to be! We hadn't visited Warner before, we had heard so many good reports about it, we planned and booked the visit in January 2013 and we were all really looking forward to it, (that is my husband and I and two friends) but after our experiences we will not be returning and would definitely not recommend it to anyone.

I have to say that the only good thing to comment on is that the food was really very good. The dining room and kitchen staff are hard working and very helpful and given that they had so many residents to cater for, everything was piping hot and of a really good quality. Well done!

We arrived on Monday 30th December and our disappointment began when we saw our rooms. All the brochures we had viewed and the Warner website showed that the historic rooms had 4-poster beds, so we paid the extra and upgraded. Our rooms showed nothing of being 'historical'. In fact Rooms 3 and 7 were no more than 'standard bedrooms'. It appeared that we had paid £480 extra between us (£80 per couple, per night of our stay), for what amounted to 4 dressing gowns, 4 pairs of slippers, 2 baskets of fruit, 4 small bottles of wine, toiletries (which are standard in all hotels these days) .......have I missed anything?

A later conversation with the Manager highlighted that the 'historic' rooms were priced between £40 and £100 above standard provision. She also said that Rooms 3 and 7 should only have had a £40 supplement.

The rooms and bathrooms were 'tired', they needed updating, the lighting needed to be reviewed and the plugs need to be near mirrors, our bed was a double with a badly fitting duvet - it looked like a double duvet in a king-sized cover..............to name just a few things.

Then we tried to book 'fine dining' in the Terrace Restaurant, to be told that the restaurant was closed on Wednesdays!! Well New Years Day happened to be a Wednesday, surely a special day like that should be an exception?? We were informed that The Terrace Restaurant was also fully booked on New Years Eve as well.

Following our meal on New Years Eve, we made our way to the Pavilion Function Room only to find that some tables had been reserved, several still being empty at that stage, all other tables were in use. We were then forced to sit in the bar area. After ordering drinks we then had to wait for glasses this again happened later in the evening. To add insult to injury every time the smokers went outside to indulge in their habit we were subjected to an icy blast as the outside door was opened.

The thing that further fuelled our frustration was that the tables had been reserved in the function room and that those tables were still unattended. Our friends went down to reception about this situation and were informed that they were for guests. They returned to the bar with the Manager. At this stage we were a party of 4 sitting in the bar area with 32 other people doing the same who were also unable to find seats or tables in the function room. We complained to the Manager about the lack of available tables and whilst she did her best to accommodate us in the function room, the only thing she could offer was 4 chairs that she had placed in a row, two of which were in a walk way behind the view of the stage and with no table. This would have meant we would have to nurse our drinks for the duration of the evening and we have found it difficult to communicate with each other. When asked who the reserved tables were for, we were told that they were definitely for residents and the hotels policy is not to reserve tables for outside parties.

Then at 11pm even more people appeared to come out of the wood work, swelling the numbers in the bar to over 50 seated. The previously reserved tables were taken up and I subsequently went to ask if the people were residents, they all said that they were not and had been dining in the Terrace restaurant - no wonder it was fully booked up on New Years Eve! The increased numbers meant that the bar staff were under considerable pressure and were unable to maintain a flow of collecting and washing glasses to accommodate the need.

By this stage we were so disappointed and disillusioned we felt that we could no longer continue our stay, so we made the decision to leave the following morning. We checked out just prior to 11am on New Years Day.

Whilst we appreciate some times of the year are busier than others, New Year being particularly so, it is blatantly clear that Warner, through Nidd Hall, have taken bookings over and above the residents, to the detriment of their enjoyment and comfort.

We were extremely upset that the manager blatantly lied to us about the table situation and apart from a token apology we were dismissed. The reception staff were slow and rude. Whilst checking out the member of staff left us to deal with other guests and made no reference to the fact that we were checking out 24 hours early. When we pointed out how disappointed we had been we were asked if we wished to speak to the manager, but when we declined stating that we had spoken to her the previous night, we were brushed off.

The hotels infra-structure does not reflect and is incapable of accommodating so many people successfully for such an occasion. This smacks of nothing more than corporate greed and is completely unfair on those guests who have booked on the strength of your brochure, website and reputation. It is the individual who you should continue to court and nurture, not the pound note., where are your values?

Just shared a Twixmas break here with friends. A lovely place with marvellous friendly hard working staff, especially the entertainment team who never seem to stop. All they do is excellent & the most spectacular shows can be seen - this after a hard days work. Delicious food served by very efficient waiting staff who will do everything possible to please you. The grounds are extremely well maintained as is the interior of the building. Some very pleasant walks can be had if the weather is suitable. The Rockin Berries cabaret was fantastic & extremely entertaining for us as they are of our era
Bedrooms very comfortable, immaculate warm & spacious too. An extremely high quality place to stay. A very pleasant break away. Bit naughty to charge extra for tea/coffee after dinner though.

Room Tip: We stayed on first floor. Would not be good if you had noisy people above.

We have just returned from our very first Warner Holiday and the experience was very good indeed. The whole of the entertainment team were excellent and we really enjoyed the whole experience. In the restaurant the food was great and we had very good service from all an Katerina in particular. The grounds/gardens are great for walking off the excess of food with free standing exercise facilities dotted around. The only downside was the Historic room which in our case fell below the standard we would expect, No. 19 was poor in decoration the curtains needed attention paint work was poor and room cold.

we stayed at nidd hall between christmas and new year in an historic room, the extra we paid for the historic room was not worth the money, we were on the top floor this is where the servants would have been, the food was good the bar staff where very steady, the entertainment was aimed at 70+ age group nearly all ballroom dancing, the rocking berries were on as the star attraction but only for about an hour on saturday evening from 9 till 10pm that was it. the hall its self was a lovely old house but spoilt by the lack of open fires being replaced by electric fan heaters, the spa was disapointing, jacuzi not working, sauna and steam room not working, all in all not worth the money

Room Tip: historic rooms not woth the extra money

Thank you for your comments and I was sorry to learn that you were dissapointed with your break.

As the old part of the house is a listed building, the rooms are all different shapes and sizes but If the team are aware of it they will always try to look at what alternatives are available.

We try to cater for as many different tastes as possible with a variety of entertainment to suit our guests and we have a full and varied programme with an outside act on the Saturday evening of each weekend break.

Thank you again for your comments

Best wishes for the New Year

As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with polite and friendly staff who made us feel very relaxed and very welcome. Our room was extremely clean and tidy and although there were a few flies on the bathroom blind, we mentioned it once and it was instantly cleaned. We explored the whole estate and would highly recommend to anybody wanting to go somewhere nice, quiet and relaxing to definitely try Nidd Hall. Our only disappointment was, we felt that the menu for the evening restaurant was a little too fancy for fancy sake. Too much effort on appearance and not on taste but full marks for cleanliness, hygiene and effort. The waitress, Gabi, was extremely friendly and polite but also professional. We were impressed that she could remember exactly what drinks we liked with our breakfast as well as our evening meals. This made us feel very welcome. If we could change just one thing, it would be the menu, we love the carvery and we also like the al a carte menu, however for the standard restaurant, please just keep it simple as sometimes you can spoil a good thing.

Room Tip: We had a historic room in the main building which was excellent, however, for value for money a stan...

We spent Christmas at Nidd Hall as part of a group and have nothing but praise. The food and entertainment was excellent and staff simply wonderful.
The room was clean, spacious and bed comfortable. The bathroom had a bath with a
shower. Our stay was full board with lots of choices to choose from at mealtimes.
All the staff were helpful, nothing was to much trouble for them to assist.

The entertainment during the day and evening was first class.
The hotel is in a beautiful setting, first stayed in the summer 2011 and would certainly return.
