“Excellent country house hotel for adults”
Reviewed 14 November 2010

We spent a delightful night and following day at Nidd Hall, a wonderfully relaxing hotel amidst beautiful countryside, and very close to Harrogate and Ripon. It is a very large hotel with extensive facilities, and is for adults only. Some reviews have suggested that the average age is rather ancient. We didn't find it so, though the age range seemed to start at 45 plus. We stayed in a Signature Room, in a far-off wing of the hotel - though still part of the main building. It was very spacious, quiet, contemporary in design, with excellent quality decorations and furnishings, and with all the extras that an upgrade room might suggest. The bathroom was a good size, with high quality toiletries (White Company).

Accommodation includes dinner in the price, but we chose to pay a supplement to dine in the Rosette-awarded Terrace Restaurant. We weren't disappointed. It's a lovely setting, and the service was exemplary. The range of vegetarian dishes for the starter did not appeal to me (entirely my fault - I'm overly fussy), but the chef suggested an option which was more to my liking. The quality of food was really excellent. After dinner, there was a range of activities for those who sought entertainment, and this included live music (songs from West End shows), plus a late-evening 'book at bedtime' reading. Alternatively, the two elegant lounges, plus cosy library and cocktail bar, provided a quieter alternative.

A good quality breakfast with an excellent buffet-type choice was served in the attractive main restaurant. There was some confusion as to where we should be sitting, and this wasn't handled entirely professionally, but the at-table service (once we found our correct table!) was friendly and efficient. The grounds, which include a formal terrace, lake and water garden, provided an opportunity for a post-breakfast stroll. A great deal of careful environmental conservation has gone into the grounds, and information boards provide information on this. This is all to the hotel's credit, in an age when adjoining land is too often sold off for building. The rest of the day was spent taking advantage of the indoor pool and spa, where pampering treatments, plus steam room, sauna and jacuzzi, are available. Lunch was served at the poolside.

The weather was very cold during our stay, and the heating in our room hadn't been on prior to our arrival. Consequently, it took some time to warm up. The lounges and bar were a little chilly, too. Nidd Hall is rated as 4-star, and this seems entirely appropriate for a hotel which is excellently maintained, and spotlessly clean. Staff were helpful, and assisted in making our stay a welcoming and comfortable one. We look forward to our next visit.

We have just returned from our visit to Nidd Hall and would like to say what a wonderful long weekend it was. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, our waitress Annika was delightful and always there to help. All the food was nicely cooked and very tasty.

The weekend was for us a Murder Mystery weekend which was very well performed and the meal served with it was really nice.

The grounds were very extensive and well laid out around the Hotel, only wish we could have had more time to explore, maybe next time? The other facilities were very good especially the large swimming pool it looked very inviting but again not enough time to give it try.

The tour of the grounds the history and the ghost walk were very entertaining.

The evening entertainment was extremely good.

Overall a very good weekend Thank You.

We stayed at Warners Thoresby hall hotel last November and was looking forward to our stay at Nidd. We booked our dates for ballroom for dancing lessons for which we paid a premium. Numbers for dancing are limited and we thought we were lucky to get places. Only 3 couples were there however, much to the intructor's clear disappointment. Nevertheless, we got loads of attention and the instructor was very good.
Our ground floor standard room was spacious but defintely in need of refurbishment. The TV was very old, had only 4 channels and the remote control did not work properly. The drawers and wardrobe, though adequate in size were old and tatty. The bathroom was a reasonable size and the shower very good. However, as warned, the water from the hot tap was VERY hot! Housekeeping was poor to say the least. Dirty wine glasses were left in our room on two days and I doubt if our room was dusted or vacuumed during our 3night/4 day stay. There was a draught from the french doors.
Entertainment at night was pretty good and seemingly appreciated if judged by lack of space on the dancefloor.
I had a male manicure for £22 (they at first tried to charge £24). This consisted of 15-20 minutes filing my nails and dipping them in some fluid of some sort - a total rip off. I also had a massge. Supposed to be 30 minutes but the therapist (the same as done my nails) actually spent 15 minutes rubbing my back and shoulders - It couldn't be called a massge by any stretch of the imagination.
Bar prices were very high. We did however, go to a wine tasting session. This was done by the entertainment director, who started by saying he is not an expert but still done a very good job in our opinion. For £3 each we got 3 good sized glasses of wine - excellent value!
Food was reasonable and our waitress, who seemed to be on duty every breakfast and dinner time was very very good.
Average guest age seemed to be about mid-late 60s with a smattering of younger people.
This hotel has the potential to be excellent but in its current state I don't think we'll be booking again.

My first impressions were "God's waiting room" We are in our 60's but everyone seemed a lot older than us. The seating arrangements for dining were akin to Butlins and other holiday camps. Our table was situated between two dumb waitors with the ensuing noise of crockery and staff moving to and fro - everytime a waitress carried trays of used crockery we were aware of the dangers of accidents. We spoke to more than one supervisor about it but nothing was done apart from the table was moved about 1 foot away from the dumb waitiors. Dont expect any help with your luggage - there are no porters waiting to help. The rooms - Historic - were nothing like the internet photos - very small but with nice on suite bathrooms. Not recommended

Hotel was in the country with no transport you can only use a Taxi. No Hotel shuttle bus. Area is Lovely, and worth going to Harrogate. Flower Show was FAB. Hotel was a disaster. Went by Train, as no Coach available! Tiring journey. Hotel was just inferior. About 2*. Most people were aged 90, and in wheel chairs etc. Most Sad if younger. The Evening entertainment was pre -war, and poor, dreary We had to walk out. Theatre like a Hi De Hi experience.
Bed was Knackered. Bathroom was freezing, and all the items broken. Very cold in rooms, had an electric fire only, so we got Colds. Dirty dusty rooms.
The 4* restaurant was awful, like a canteen with school dinners, just food in bulk, and carverys. The Chefs looked scruffy.
The actuall house was interesting, but poorly run down. Most waiting staff were Polish and just barked at us or ignored us, as they did not speak English. Just not good enough.
I am going to write for a REFUND as it cost me £1200 for a luxurey 5 day break for 2. What a rip off??? I think I will go to Spain next time with thjis amount of Money I could have had a week in the SUN!!!m Wake up England. Where is the ''Hotel Inspector'' she should get a team to visit all of these rip off places in UK. I have suffered one too many now!!

What a wonderful two days we had recently at Nidd Hall Hotel, only wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel was all that we had been given to expect .. and more. As we drove up the long drive we wondered what would await us, and there it was. Set in lovely settings, with very well kept grounds we were lucky enough to be in the Rosedale Room which had outstanding views across the rolling countryside.
After checking in at the very impressive reception area where we were warmly greeted by the first of many pleasant and helpful staff we took the lift to our room on the second floor, and what a large, spacious room it was, serviced to a high standard. If this was a Historic Room, goodness knows what a Historic Suite could be, after all how can you improve on perfection.
Dinner the first evening was in the Rawson Room and both the food and the service was excellent and then, the second evening in The Terrace was simply an outstanding experience. A very extensive menu with the food cooked to perfection (that's the second time I have used that word) ..
During the day we preferred to do our 'own thing' and sampled the delights of the nearby Knaresborough and then on to Harewood House which was well worth the visit and only a short drive away. By evening, and after dinner all we wanted to do was relax in the quiet ambience of the hotel and as such did not take advantage of any of the many activities taking place and entertainment .
Must mention breakfast which, despite the large numbers all wanting to eat at around the same time was a very smooth and pleasant start to the day.
For us the Hotel had everything we wanted and more ... thank you all at Nidd Hall for a wonderful two days.
