We spent a delightful night and following day at Nidd Hall, a wonderfully relaxing hotel amidst beautiful countryside, and very close to Harrogate and Ripon. It is a very large hotel with extensive facilities, and is for adults only. Some reviews have suggested that the average age is rather ancient. We didn't find it so, though the age range seemed to start at 45 plus. We stayed in a Signature Room, in a far-off wing of the hotel - though still part of the main building. It was very spacious, quiet, contemporary in design, with excellent quality decorations and furnishings, and with all the extras that an upgrade room might suggest. The bathroom was a good size, with high quality toiletries (White Company).
Accommodation includes dinner in the price, but we chose to pay a supplement to dine in the Rosette-awarded Terrace Restaurant. We weren't disappointed. It's a lovely setting, and the service was exemplary. The range of vegetarian dishes for the starter did not appeal to me (entirely my fault - I'm overly fussy), but the chef suggested an option which was more to my liking. The quality of food was really excellent. After dinner, there was a range of activities for those who sought entertainment, and this included live music (songs from West End shows), plus a late-evening 'book at bedtime' reading. Alternatively, the two elegant lounges, plus cosy library and cocktail bar, provided a quieter alternative.
A good quality breakfast with an excellent buffet-type choice was served in the attractive main restaurant. There was some confusion as to where we should be sitting, and this wasn't handled entirely professionally, but the at-table service (once we found our correct table!) was friendly and efficient. The grounds, which include a formal terrace, lake and water garden, provided an opportunity for a post-breakfast stroll. A great deal of careful environmental conservation has gone into the grounds, and information boards provide information on this. This is all to the hotel's credit, in an age when adjoining land is too often sold off for building. The rest of the day was spent taking advantage of the indoor pool and spa, where pampering treatments, plus steam room, sauna and jacuzzi, are available. Lunch was served at the poolside.
The weather was very cold during our stay, and the heating in our room hadn't been on prior to our arrival. Consequently, it took some time to warm up. The lounges and bar were a little chilly, too. Nidd Hall is rated as 4-star, and this seems entirely appropriate for a hotel which is excellently maintained, and spotlessly clean. Staff were helpful, and assisted in making our stay a welcoming and comfortable one. We look forward to our next visit.
