“Good value for short break”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

Stayed here last month on a spa break. Thought the hotel was very good value. The meal which was included for one night was good with excellent service. The actual restaurant is nicely decorated. Staff are extremely pleasant and helpful.

Our room was clean and had very good wi fi reception.

The spa area was OK but really needs redecorating and updating but was adequate for two days. Gym facilities excellent.

Don't hesitate to book for short break.

Room Tip: We were on the second floor.

My wife and I took a deal for 2 nights at the Mercure Great Danes Hotel in Maidstone direct through the hotel website. You could probably find the same deal via Amazon Local or Groupon or similar deal sites but the hotel offered exactly the same thing - 2 nights bed n breakfast and evening meal on the first night. Along with many many other people we decided to arrive on Valentines Day afternoon and the place was pretty busy.

At first glance the hotel looked pretty well kept and was tidy. Check in was rather busy but they had enough staff on hand to deal with everyone. I had ordered a package in advance which was delivered on time and held behind reception for me, so that was all good. We were allocated a room on the second floor which was quite a walk to get to but appeared to be in a fairly quiet part of the building. No doubt there was some event or function that evening and possibly on the Saturday too much being all the way 'back there' didn't hear a thing.

The room itself was a little small but clean and comfortable. Has to be said, it was one of the best beds we've slept in - lovely firm mattress, gorgeous linen and pillows. Bathroom was tidy and had good strong hot water from the shower. Tea and coffee available and iron/trouser press. The only thing that we didn't like was the awful weather that Friday night and the on-going shrieking of the wind through the windows, which made for an awful night's sleep. This isn't any fault of the hotel of course. I called down to see if the hotel might even have earplugs, but unfortunately they didn't, haha. Was a freak one-off storm anyway and the next night was beautifully peaceful.

Dinner on the first night was interesting. With so many people staying at the hotel we took an 8:30pm reservation and it was rather busy again. We couldn't really understand what the guy who saw us to our table was saying over the noise and his accent, but the staff were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our package of a 3 course meal so indulged ourselves with a lovely carvery. The live singing might put some people off a little, but made for a nice atmosphere in the Brasserie.

Breakfast was a similar affair - queues of people lining up at the breakfast buffet. Food was tasty though so no complaints there. All the usual stuff. On the second morning we didn't take any tea or coffee and it was nice that someone noticed this and came over to check whether we did want anything - with so many people bustling around it's nice to know they were checking.

We used the pool facilities on the first evening before dinner and the place wasn't that bad. Typical changing rooms and lockers and a nice pool, with sauna and Jacuzzi, which was a little strong on the chlorine side and wasn't that pleasant.

Overall, a very nice place but hard to give it much of a review after only 2 nights. I think a few of the reviews here are a little unfair but of course, people are much more inclined to review when they've only had a bad experience (see how many "1 review" members there are on TripAdvisor). Nice place to stay, decent food and nice, friendly staff made for a pleasant. Shame about the weather but we can't do anything about that!

I came here for a weekend break with a friend. The hotel was clean and staff friendly and helpful. We booked a special package deal which was quite good value (£70 each for twin room, dinner, 2 glasses each of champagne and breakfast) but had to keep reminding staff what was included (this was quickly provided but felt they could have been more aware of what deals they were offering!) dinner was good and bar prices reasonable. We went for a spa treatment which was nice but think the pool area could do with a spruce up and was a bit dirty in areas like changing rooms etc. The rooms were reasonable size and well maintained. The hotel is easy to get to but is not within walking distance of any town or shops. Breakfast was a well stocked buffet. Would stay again for a short break as we had a really nice time.

We are just back from a couple of nights here. £220 for bed, breakfast, dinner and use of facilities. We arrived at 7.30 Sunday evening and reception did not have our booking. Fairly easily remedied. We were a bit disappointed that all the spa facilities closed at seven on SUnday so we couldn't get in a late swin - but fair enough.

Had a decent dinner, including an excellent steak, and headed off for an early night. The room was pretty small, there was not enough room to walk around the bed, I had to climb over to get to my side. The bed was really comfy however, and I was looking forward to a good night sleep. This was completely ruined by the wedding party who ran up and down corridors from middnight until about 3am, shouting and banging doors. I called reception to complain, twice, but nothing changed and I got absolutely no sleep whatsoever. In the morning the whole corridor stank of smoke, as the wedding guests had clearly been fagging away in their rooms.

I spoke to reception the next morning, they offered an apology and nothing else. They knew they had a wedding party in the hotel with the potential to be rowdy, I just don't know why they had to put us in the same corridor.

The next day the wedding party surfaced at about 11am and started drinking, They monopolised the bar area, making it pretty unpleasant for other guests through shouting and swearing, but the hotel did nothing (except continue serving them alcohol) We ended up having lunch by the pool to get away from them.

The wedding party eventually left just before dinner was due to be served, otherwise we would definitely have had room service.

We got a great nights sleep and were looking forward to a final swim before we left - but no - there was an OAP aqua aerobics class in the pool.

All in all - it was cheap and I suppose you get what you pay for, but if guests are kept awake for one of two nights of their stay by other guests, then a simple apology does not cut it - an upgrade or free treatment or bottle of bubbly maybe, but a sorry and shrug of the shoulders, not good enough.

Dear Regan01
Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your meal & a great nights sleep. We appreciate any feedback which will allow us to continually monitor and improve our service and standards. I am very sorry that the behaviour of less considerate guests impacted on your stay. We are mindful of guest comfort, the hotel is non smoking and managers control any issues on an ongoing basis. The club runs several classes throughout the week and the aqua class should only occupy 25% of the 16 metre pool. Once again, thank you for your feedback. Sincerely, Dominic

Upon arriving the outside didn't look special and I was skeptical how well the stay would be. There was plenty of car park space and the reception area was clean and elegant. Receptionist was very friendly and accommodating, able to tell us the times for the restaurant and leisure facilities.

The restaurant was spacious and staff friendly. We found the prices quite dear but fortunately they accepted tastecard otherwise we would have dined elsewhere. Cooked english breakfast buffet was great, with everything one would expect. They just need to fix the toaster which burns bread on the recommended heat setting.

The room was clean and tidy. Only complaint was the TV was dated and it would freeze when changing channels too quickly.

Now for us the best thing about the stay was the leisure facilities. There was so much to do, swimming, spa, cardio gym, resistance gym, table tennis, outdoor chess, tennis, mini golf, outdoor running track. We ended up spending an entire day just making use of all these activities. The only thing was the sauna was out of use for the gents, but all the other facilities made up for this. Rackets and balls are provided for the sports which was great as we forgot to bring tennis balls.

The grounds for the hotel are absolutely massive, I can imagine during spring and summer the place must look amazing.

I would recommend this hotel for sure.

Thank you for your positive review. I was delighted to read your comments and pleased to share with the team. There is certainly something for everyone here. Perhaps next time you visit, try the fishing lake or book a treatment such as the warm bamboo stick massage in the award winning Exquisite Spa. We are also pleased to have recently achieved 'Top rated' status with Wahanda too. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Sincerely, Dominic

We stayed here for a weekend in October and were pleasantly surprised. The exterior of the hotel does not do it justice, so don't be put off.
The spa and pool area was very good and quite empty. We pre-booked a hot bamboo massage and it was fantastic, very relaxing and worth every penny.
The room was pretty standard but very clean and comfortable,
The only complaint I would have is that the reception staff were not very helpful or efficient. They need to be reminded that the customer ultimately keeps them in employment. I called reception and asked them to book us a table for two at eight that evening which they told me they had done.
However, when we arrived later we found that the booking had not been made for us. It was extremely busy as it was a Saturday night and it looked like we wouldn't get a table but thanks to the efforts of Piotr, who was extremely helpful, we did, he managed to fit us in slightly later.
Dinner at the hotel was delicious, we chose the steak and it was lovely.
Live entertainment was also provided by Peter Dinsley who sang lots of old swing tunes from Frank Sinatra to Dean Martin and he was great!.
We had a great evening at the hotel, thanks to the restaurant staff, especially Piotr and Vicki.
Good value for money, delicious food and great entertainment.
Would I stay here again? If i was in the area - definitely!
