“Great contrast to the big city scene”
Reviewed 24 January 2013

I highly recommend a few nights here as part of a Panama itinerary. A very peaceful, idyllic resort - in the midst of a verdant rainforest. You'd expect a lot of bugs - but that was not the case. I never got a single mosquito bite (though it was dry season).

The excursion to the nearby Embera Village is not-to-be-missed. The Aerial Tram tour is so-so. Decent view from the top - but don't expect to see any animals. Another guest told me that she saw abundant birdlife very early in the morning when she went for a walk. Saw a couple of monkeys and a sloth on the wildlife cruise - which was interesting to be up close to the huge ships traveling through Gatun Lake.

Nice views from rooms (especially on upper floors). Love the hammock on the patio.

Staff are very pleasant and they try hard. Waiters are nice, but English is not their strong suit. They didn't have enough waiters for the breakfast rush.

The General Manager, Mario, is working hard to improve service levels and training. I've been to this property a few years ago, and see much improvement.

All in all - a very nice compliment to a stay in Panama City.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 4th floor.

We stayed at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort for 2 nights with our young children (age 4 and 6). The hotel is great, rooms are spacious, clean with a great view of the Canal and the Chagres River. The pools were great and provided hours of fun for our children. Pool-side service was a plus. Overall, the food was ok, but I was expecting higher quality given how great everything else is.
We did some of the tours offered by the hotel and particularly enjoyed the trip to the Embera village.
The staff at Gamboa deserves 5 star, very friendly and helpful!

Just spent 2 nites at this resort in the rain forest in Gamboa! Scenic views from windows and wake up to chirping birds! Wish we would have seen more wildlife!
Rooms are large but average in their care. Had to call at 3 pm to get room cleaned and then the dehumidifier wasn't emptied. Shower soap was taken and not replaced, more attention to service is needed. Food was average. Lots of potential for a great resort but work to be done!

PRO's
Grounds are amazing
Views are simply breathtaking
Guides are pleasant

Con's
Dirty rooms
Poor service in general
Overpriced tours (BIG TIME)
Lack of accountability for general safety and well being of their guests

Basically, go for the view, maybe a day tour or two, and a drink at the bar to catch an amazing sunset, and if you are going to stay overnight, one or two days is plenty for what they offer.

Room Tip: Try and get a higher floor room. The view is better and the bugs less terrible for sitting outside...

This is our second time at this resort and we were not disappointed...On entering the reception area you do get that WOW ! factor.
You are surrounded by windows with an amazing view of the Chagres River flowing into the Panama canal and of course the forest, birds and wild life all around.

The rooms are large all with balcony's with spectacular views, and of course a coffee maker which is great first thing in the morning while you are lying in your hammock enjoying the vista.

There are three options for eating a buffett in the main building- an A La Carte ( which you need to make reservations for ) and another restaurant by the river which is just a short walk away.

We had no problem booking trips, at the reception desk, or at any of the restaurants, all the staff were very nice and spoke English very well.

There are lots of tours available which can be booked right at the resort..... The Pipeline Rd, Partial canal cruises, etc.

We went inclusive from Canada with Sunwing which we were glad we did, as the alternative would have been quite expensive.

If you like nature, this is a destination you would love, it does have a large swimming pool also if you want to cool off, since it is very hot and humid hear.

Not for beach people that enjoy loud music and being entertained while they tan on a beach.

Room Tip: main building higher floor for a better view

I already visited Costa Rica and had heard that Gamboa is the place to go to experience wildlife in Panama. We booked through Orbitz.com today before we arrived. Even before we arrived I knew that we weren't going to get good service. We tried contacting the hotel no less than 20 times using 3 different phone numbers to try to find out if shuttle service was available to the hotel from Panama City. In all those times, not one person picked up the phone. We then decided to ask Orbitz to do the work for us. It took the Orbitz agent a good 40 minutes to get through and was hung up on twice before she successfully learned that there is no transportation. We had to get a cab from Panama City to Gamboa for $40.

We finally get there and are welcomed to this amazingly majestic view of the Chagres River. The hotel has a monopoly on it and they really are the only game in town/

We checked-in and barely got a smile from the reception desk. We didn't even get the promised welcome drink. They didn't even have a busboy take our luggage to the room. They initially gave us a room on the first floor and since the elevator was out of order we had to carry our luggage 3 flights down (reception is on the 4th floor/ground level). The room was big but had a disgusting mildew smell and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. We asked to switch to the 5th floor and this time a busboy did take our luggage upstairs. The room didn't smell but didn't look so clean. It was however a definite improvement.

Our package included breakfast which was passable though it did not have a lavish spread. We had to purchase all of the other meals a la carte. Given that we could only eat at the hotel, it was expensive.

Through our Orbitz booking we received 10% all the activities, the tram ride, Monkey Island, etc. We had to remind them of it and they didn't have it in the computer. The guides were indeed knowledgeable. In Costa Rica, you couldn't move without finding an animal; here it took a lot of effort and money for each of the tours. This hotel should really become all-inclusive with meals and activities since you really have no choice of where to go.

One thing for sure, don't expect friendly service with a smile.

This is one of those places that has an amazing property but is long past its better days. The hotel sits one the side of a hill overlooking the Chagras river and was obviously a spectacular place at one time. The jungle is trying to reclaim it. It needs a major over haul. More importantly, it needs better service. We left at 7 am for a jungle tour and came back at 2 and the rooms had never been touched by housekeeping. I went to the front desk to ask for housekeeping to make the beds etc...don't you hate it when you are the only one at the desk and the person at the desk pretends that you aren't there? After he finally got done with whatever it was he was working on, he seemed irritated that I needed help. I gave him my story and asked for housekeeping service and went to lunch. 45 minutes later I went back to the rooms (now 3 pm) and they were still untouched. I went back to the desk and asked for the hotel manager and he was "in a meeting". Amazingly, he was in a meeting for the rest of the afternoon. All in all, it was too bad that this beautiful property did not live up to its promise.
