“If you like beef, dont come here there is none”
Reviewed 3 August 2014 via mobile

Being in the middle of the rainforest is a unique experience. Didn't like that we could not take any of the tours. They were always full. Without taking the tour its just like any other hotel. Food was good but no beef in the menu. Rooms have a scent of old and moisture.

Definitely a great place for relaxation. Although it needs more and better maintenance, the A/C in our suite was broken. The personnel was good though we had to ask for everything and make sure they set things for us properly and despite asking for things like check out, the bedroom door was locked despite of the fact that we personally asked for the check out.
Overall, food great, atmosphere very relaxing, nice place. A bit too expensive for the things it has to offer.

We had been to Gamboa Resort a few times before and truly enjoyed our experience there. The setting and environment are just stunning and captivating , the facilities of highest standards. At Gamboa, you are surrounded by mystical forest, nature and the Chagres river.
The eco tours offered by the resort are very interesting and the tour guides knowledgeable, friendly and experienced.
The hotel grand entrance and reception area offer stunning views. The décor overall is still in perfect harmony with the environment, though some upgrades would be beneficial. The room we were given on the second floor was very spacious with a large bath and a nice terrace with hammock. Comfortable but a bit outdated as a suite. We were hoping for a better room on the 4th floor .
Our stay was pleasant: from the interesting tours, the sumptuous Sunday champagne brunch ( not to be missed!) to the accommodation. The staff is friendly, helpful and forthcoming.
A visit to Panama City would not be complete without a stay at beautiful Gamboa.

We booked the honey moon package for 4 nights which included airport transfer, a ride through the trees in a chair lift to see a stunning view, dinner in the Chagres restaurant and massage in the clarins spa. The food was great, the room or suite even better, just luxurious, large and with a stunning view of the Chagres River. Unfortunately most of the staff we came across could simply not have cared less. There was one receptionist who tried to make up for the appalling service elsewhere who was excellent, as was the Maitre D in The Chagres Restaurant who was, in fact, from the US originally where they do care about service. Examples of the poor service was, forgetting to replenish the bar and coffee provided in the rooms( we had to ask twice in 2 days) , when going to guest relations desk the staff frequently went to the other desk and ignored you. If you went to sit in front of them they also ignored you. Asking for the bill when there are only 3 of you in the restaurant should not have been the challenge it became either. We booked an early bird guide one morning and on arriving in reception were told they hadn't rung him and confirmed.... This place probably lost another $300 from our bill due to the terrible service. The food was generally good but staff training needs some time and money spent on it. It wasn't a cheap few days either and when we go back that way it wont be here.

Room Tip: upgrade to a suite or just go toCanopy Towers instead

We rooms and hotel are lovely. Whilst not new, the hotel is still full of grace.

Pros:
super safe for a young family (we have two kids - 5 & 7 years)
great pool
fantastic outlook of the Chagres river (not the canal as we initially thought)
free night tour (20 mins by bus around the resort animal spotting - we say birds, 2 capybaras and red cayman eyes in the distance)
good buffet breakfast (definitely try and get a B&B rate)

Cons:
Quite secluded and you really do need to have a car if you want to do anything outside the resort.
Food gets mononous on the third day, two nights was perfect.

I gave this hotel 5 stars as Francisco at the front desk was super helpful. We got a flat tyre whist at the resort and due to our limited Spanish he helped us work with the Car Rental company to get it resolved.

Room Tip: The ones higher up have the best views.

An amazing experience from the moment we got there until the moment we left.
I'll start with the negative stuff. You would have to agree that the resort requires updating, particularly the tennis court. That's out of the way now, on to the positives.
The resort overlooks the beautiful Charges River which you never get bored of looking over. At dawn there is chorus of birds and insects that makes a sound like something you've never heard. It was amazing that first morning. The room was clean and fully replenished every day of our stay. It was air conditioned and had free cable tv. The room was spacious and well presented.
The pool was excellent with a bar and towel service in a beautiful setting. We also had access to a gym and tennis courts which we used often.
We also had access to free bikes in the Lobby which we used each morning to travel through Gamboa Town and along the canal which was great spotting birds such as Toucans and Black Vultures along the way. The hotel staff left fresh coffee in the Lobby for guests which was great for us heading on our trail.
The Lobby was beautiful and open with waterfalls you could here as you admired the view and the interior design. Having free wifi was a bonus which extended to the beautiful library up the stairs with its comfy couches, air conditioning and old fashioned chess set.
We only ate in the main restaurant because the buffet breakfast was huge and lasted us all day. The selection was great and the quality of food was good. You had a chef preparing waffles and omelettes to accompany the rest of the wonderfully presented food on offer. I should add that the staff were absolutely fantastic. They would bend over backwards for you, watching discreetly from a distance for when you needed cutlery/water etc. you never felt that they were pushing for a tip. They were so friendly. The best service I have had anywhere for a long time.
This was repeated at dinner where there was an a la carte menu which was great but we usually opted for the 25 dollar buffet (12.50) for kids. Dining was such a great experience.
There were a number of tours available some free and the others reasonably priced. We went Kayaking along the Charges River looking at mainly birds which was a unique and brilliant experience for us. The guide Juan was funny and very informative.
We also went on the Gatun Lake tour (formally Monkey Island). This again was fantastic. We saw three different types of monkey and had a fun boat ride.
All in all I would highly recommend this resort if you are going to Panama. It was unique and amazing. Very impressed

The view through 30 foot high glass walls is breathtaking, the pool is large with a swim up bar. The food is very good in few different restaurants. the rooms are nice too with balconies and hammocks looking at the mountains/jungle. The staff is very helpful and courteous.
