Wonderful location house wonderful would definitely return again not fare away from bapaume and local supermarkets John is a great host
This is a large property that actually takes up to 11 people . The location for visiting the historical area of the Somme is ideal , and there are lots of memorials very close by . The house is decorated in a very traditional French fashion , and the facilities are very modern and are of a very high standard . You are welcomed by the owner John who cannot help you enough if you want it , or leaves you alone if you want peace & quiet . John started us off with teabags & a bottle of wine - what more can you ask ?
Where to start. The property has everything that you need and plenty of space if you have a larger group. It is a home from home. Near to a lot of the main memorials so not having to spend too much time locating them. Thank you for letting us stay and have such a fabulous time. Will definitely be looking at booking again
What a great find! House is very comfy and has everything, library, conservative, garden, dining room , kitchen several bathrooms/;showers/toilets, beds are great, loveley to have a soak in one of the baths after walking the fields.
Cooked us a fantastic meal and delivered it hot and tasty!
They were both so helpful and could not do enough for us.
booking for next year already!
I've only just got around to writing a review, but four stays in five months should tell you all you need to know. A beautifully restored, perfectly equipped base of visiting the Somme region and with food prepared by Claire, if required, that is to die for. Nothing is too much trouble for John and Claire, who meet you on arrival and explain the layout of the house and how everything works. The standard of the fittings and furniture is excellent, and everything is very comfortable. More visits are planned for 2018, of that there is no doubt. We love it!!
Last minute booking for my husband and I to view the historical war graves, Somme, Albert etc. Claire and John are most hospitable recommending where to eat, although catering can be provided. The house is a museum in it's self, WW1 memorabilia is all over the house with books, leaflets and DVDs for guests to make use of. The house has historical features everywhere and yet the rerubishment is tasteful, modern where needed, i.e.the bathrooms are top quality. The property is the cleanest I have visited. John knows everything about WW1 he even took us on a tour, the personal touch meant so much. We will return with family. Thank you Claire and John
This is a fantastic house. The photos do not do it justice. The house has recently been lovingly restored by it's owners and they have done a lovely and thorough job.
The upstairs has three bedrooms, one with a large really luxurious bathroom attached. The two others are a large double room and a small room with two single beds - all equally comfortable. These two rooms share another beautiful bathroom with a bath and a shower. There are two comfortable sofas upstairs on the landing seating areas. Everything spic and span.
Downstairs there are several rooms - a further bedroom, a library, dining room, sitting room, kitchen and conservatory. Lovely brand new kitchen. Rooms all very clean and decorated comfortably in period of the house. There are a further shower room and loo tucked into this floor.
The owners John and Claire also offered to do an evening meal for us for an extra cost. My son has coeliac disease so needed to be sure his food was gluten free. Claire made us a delicious Beef bourginon with mash and veggies and a lovely tart for dessert. She made sure everything was gluten free and provided a separate dessert for him.
John has an extensive knowledge of WW1 and the house is full of medals, pictures and artifacts from the war. There is a large Library of books (in English) on the war in the Library.
There is also a fascinating german bunker/ escape route under the house that John has excavated and you can see it through a floor window in the living room.
All in all I highly recommend this house and it is within walking distance to many of the WW1 memorial sights and battlefields.
