Mount Engadine Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 August 2008

See other reviews for an in-depth and accurate description of this astonishing Lodge. Our family of five (older and young adults) spent two days at the end of a "Canadian Excursion" at the Lodge. We should simply have stayed at Mt. Engadine Lodge the entire time. The service, the food, the rooms, the entire physical living space was simply excellent and the staff very personable - but it is the physical place that is truly remarkable. Set at the edge of a meadow, and with stunning views of towering rock mountains, the Lodge is a naturalists window. Wildlife is everywhere. Make no mistake - if you need a cell phone, television, radio, computer, or other electronic connection to make your day complete - this is NOT the place for you. If you like nature "sanitized", "tamed" or "sprayed into submission", this is NOT the place for you. This is a very, very comfortable Lodge inside, with an up close and uncontrolled view of nature outside. If you enjoy a natural setting, fantastic food and meaningful conversations - along with a night sky full of stars, this is truly a wonderful experience, Trails are everywhere, and the staff will make excellent recommendations. Most guests spend the entire day out hiking - with the evenings in conversation about where they went and what they saw; or watching the moose and wildlife from the deck. It is a special lifetime experience worth the effort (and the drive) to make.

The lodge is set in a provincial park, surrounded by a meadow, a meandering stream, forested mountains, and a mud wallow that draws moose, elk and deer in the early morning and at dusk. The ambiance at the lodge is special. There is no television or telephone in your room and no cell phone service in the surrounding area. Instead there is the comraderie of guests from around the world and the lodge's friendly staff. The meals are fabulous. Breakfast is served at 8 am and dinner at 7 pm. You dine communally with the other guests and serve yourself from a buffet with many dishes. Right after breakfast, a lunch bar is set out from which you can pack a lunch to take with you on the hiking trail. Between 3 and 5 pm, afternoon tea is served.

There are many good local hiking trails for all skill levels. It is a bit disconcerting, though, to read Bear Warnings on signs and in local travel materials since the Canadian Rockies are grizzly and black bear country. Due to the lodge's secluded location, the trails are not as busy as those at Lake Louise, for example. This is good . . . and bad. On the one hand, you do not have to share the trail with anyone else. On the other hand, you worry that a bear may not hear you and stumble upon you.

This is a place to hike, read, dine and chat. (The Moose Suite has many large windows and two sofas that are wonderfully comfy for reading.) The access road to the lodge is a gravel road for a long stretch. Thus, the lodge is not a practical base for sightseeing in Banff and Lake Louise. For that part of your trip, you are better off to stay in a hotel in those areas. But if you want to immerse yourself in a beautiful, quiet setting close to nature, animals, good food and good company, this is the place for you.

Spent a fantastic three days at Mt. Engadine. Has recently been remodeled and the attention to detail really shows. Staff is superb. Brenda's cooking is wonderful and she graciously made moose cookies for us one day, when we weren't seeing any moose outside. Michael came and got me one night to see a moose right behind the lodge. Chris and Sherry-Lynn make each guest feel special and Collette was wonderful with suggestions of things to see. Came in stressed...left happy and relaxed. Bert & Charleen

My spouse and I had a fabulous time at Engadine Lodge. Everything was great! The rooms were nice and spotless. They've just been renovated. The food was absolutely delicious and we had plenty! We wanted to bring the chef back with us to Calgary. The people we met there were very interesting. Most of all, the managers and all the staff were awesome: Chris and Shari-Lynn, Colette, Linda...just to name a few. They really made us feel at home. Engadine Lodge is a great place to hike, snow shoe or cross-country ski with wonderful views of the beautiful Rockies. It can be relaxing too, sipping a glass of wine, reading a book by the fireplace, singing by the piano... We'll go back for sure. We strongly recommend it!

We stayed here for a couple of nights on a touring holiday from UK. Wow what a place. Great food, great company , great views. We have been slow to add this recommendation because we don't want others to go and spoil it. We hope to go back and stay again in the winter.

The staff at Mount Engadine know how to combine comfort and service with a relaxed and homey feel. I spent 5 nights at the lodge photographing the moose who frequent the property, and enjoyed every minute of it. From the chef's fabulous meals (I am still hoping she will put together a cookbook so I can buy one), to the immaculately clean and tastefully decorated rooms, to the cozy common areas complete with fireplaces and decks, to the stunning views of Kananskis Country. Mount Engadine is guarenteed a return visit from me.
Thanks to Mount Engadine for a great trip!

Recently stayed at the Lodge for three nights as part of a tour of the Rockies and BC. The isolation of the lodge is one of the many attractions. Facilities, service, location and management of the operation are all first class. The experience of the management team elsewhere in Canada and abroad has clearly contributed to the success of this establishment. Meals are included and all were of the highest standard. Cannot be faulted as a place to stay when exploring the stunning local scenery and activities.
