“A lovely stay”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

Having already decided on a trip to York over the Easter break, my boyfriend and I booked into this place for our first night having seen it on a TV programme, and we were not disappointed.

It's in a beautiful, peaceful location, within probably a minute's walk of Ripley Castle (which, by the way, the hotel provides you with free tickets for). The service is very good, the room we stayed in was a very reasonable size and was very comfortable (the bed and duvet were amazing!), and the breakfast was lovely.

Free wifi is also a plus.

The only thing I was slightly disappointed with, and it is a very small thing, was what I felt was a bit of a lack of attention to detail when it came to the in-room tea & coffee making facilities - there was both a teapot and a cafetiere as well as the kettle, which was fantastic, but they were only big enough to fit one cup's worth of water in each, so it wasn't possible to have the same drink together at the same time. Plus, there was only one biscuit, when there was obviously two of us staying in the room... It really was not an actual issue in itself (we didn't even eat the one biscuit that was there!), but I felt a bit more thought/consideration could have been put into it

That really is the only one tiny thing I could find any kind of issue with though - it was an extremely pleasant stay and we would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle

Had one night here and took advantage of the winter offer. Lovely hotel in a great little village. Free entry to the castle was good and the tour informative. Had the weather been better a stroll round the grounds would have been great.

Stayed in one of the annex rooms which was fine and well appointed with nice little touches. However, when we arrived, the room was cold as the heating was not on. Took a while to warm up!

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Restaurant was mis match of old and new. Modern tables without table clothes but then old style uncomfortable chairs. this affected the ambiance.

Food was very good indeed and overall good value.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review.
We are pleased to read that overall you enjoyed your stay, however,I was dissapointed to read that your room was cold on arrival.I can only suggest that with the completely crazy weather we have been having that the previous occupant had turned it down and we had not realised that when an overnight change in the temperature occured that we did not re-set the heating to the medium setting that our housekeeping team normally set it on.
Please accept our apologies and we hope to see you again soon.

We stayed here following a family wedding at Ripley castle which i add was the perfect day, we arrived before check in and the Boars head were more than acomodating looking after our things and placing them in our room. After the full day at the castle we were pleasded to say that the night porter was happy to serve us a large glass of white which was much appreciated !!

We stayed in the Chinz room atr the top of the stairs and it was lovely, great big bed with gorgeous comfy covers, we were greeted with a lovely chocolate and home made biscuits - a real treat. The bathroom was clean and inviting.

The breakfast is absolutely lovely, tasty ans hearty.

We did not have a meal this time but we have before and trust me it is gorgeous, the food is a very high standard

Room Tip: we stayed in the extra building across the road and it is lovely and so is the chinz room

We booked the night away as we were travelling on to York the next day. the hotel is located in a beautiful village right next door to the castle. The room was dated but there were three things that really let the hotel down for me, the first one being that the Bedspread had marks on it so through in to doubt the cleanliness of the room. The towels in the bathroom had seen better days in fact you could use them to exfoliate with. The last thing that really upset me was that the little bottle of shower gel that was provided was only half full and this also made me uncomfortable. However on a positive note the breakfast was beautiful and if those three things were addressed we would try the hotel again

I must apologise for the lack of attention to detail during your recent visit. As you can see from so many other reviews, our housekeeping department usually receive very positive feedback regarding the high standards of cleanliness and attention to detail.I assure you that we will look at the matters that you have addressed to ensure that they do not happen again.
I am however, delighted that other aspects of your stay live upto or maybe even beat expectations.
I do hope that we will get the chance to welcome you back again in the near future so that you can enjoy our normal high standards in all areas.

We stumbled on The Boar's Head and it turned out to be a very lucky stumble. The invitation to wander around the grounds of Ripley Castle was unexpected and very much appreciated when we arrived. We sat and watched baby rabbits, deer and red kites with the grounds to ourselves. A beautiful little village and very friendly hotel. We ate in the bistro and the food was delicious (I can recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding here as the best we had on our trip!). The only disappointment was from the love of my life who lost at the trivia quiz we played before dinner. We enjoyed the bird hotel outside our lovely room with lots of nests.

Wonderful place, friendly staff, delicious food. I don't think I've stayed anywhere lovelier.

We have stayed at the hotel twice before each time for a long weekend and eaten in the restaurant each time. This time our hotel room was fine although a little tired. The bed was large and comfortable but the duvet only just covered the width of the bed so we did end up fighting for cover! The pillows also fought back! We had booked a meal in the restaurant and were told it is now called the brasserie. Gone are the tables covered in linen and the napkins are now paper. The walls are now a boring cream and the lighting is quite bright. We were presented with the ubiquitous large menu card offering a variety of meals from bangers and mash to sea bream, not what we expected. The waiters had long faces, could this be because they are dressed in funereal black? The meal was good but nothing special! By half past nine apart from a party of twleve we were the only people left.
Next morning we went for breakefast at 9.15 only to find the tables all full so we were directed to the lounge to wait or we could sit in the bistro (read bar!), we sat in the lounge reading the papers. We waited 40 minutes but in that time two other couples made their way in to breakfast before us and we kept having to ask if there were any tables free. We eventually ordered our breakfast and when the preserves and butter arrived we found that the two slices of butter had been put on top of someone elses scrapings - ugh! I was also treated to a large bowl of ketchup in the window bottom left there by the tables last occupants. I know that things cannot stay the same and that changes have to occur in order to remain successful but I cannot see how a restaurant that is as empty by 9.15 on a Saturday evening as this one was can sustain the business. We will not return.

I am sorry to hear that your recent stay was not as enjoyable as previous visits.
We refurbished our Dining areas in Feb 2011 and are delighted that the vast majority of guests since then have given us very positive feedback about the changes. The new menu has also been very well received by the majority with a great selection of local and seasonal produce some of which comes from our own Kitchen gardens.
Our choice of waiting staff and their uniform are normally on the receiving end of high praise for their customer care and attention that they give to guests ,so I am surpriesd to hear your comments regarding long faces and funerals.
We offer the option of Breakfast in two different areas when we have full occupancy and this works very well with guests having the choice to sit in the Brasserie or the Bistro. This means that delays are kept to a minimum on busy Breakfasts so please accept my apologies that you had such a long delay in getting a table in the Brasserie .
I am dissapointed to read that you will not return , but we will take on board your comments to improve our customer service in the future.
