“Avoid if at all possible!”
Reviewed 19 August 2013

We stayed in sequoia parc from 5th to 13th August 2013 and I definitely wont be returning.

Negatives
The receptionist Marie booked us in she was rude, uniformative, not helpful, grumpy it was like as if we were bothering her rather than greeting us with a smile especially given the rates you pay, just not what you expect from a 5* campsite she pointed to our pitch on a map and that was it, we werent shown our pitch by a campsite employee which is norm for a les Castell 5* campsite, she didnt tell us where the sanitary blocks were, nor electric hook up, water, what is available on site etc - NOT A GOOD ATTITUDE

We had to wait 2 hrs to get electric hook up as the connection was so far from our caravan we had to get a 2nd lead, we had to contact reception 3 times before they dealth with the problem, when the maintenance staff arrived who were extremely friendly and helpful they did sort the problem, but the lead was stolen during our visit so we had to go through the same problem again!!

the sanitary blocks, there is not enough of them for the size of the campsite, they are always dirty, toothpaste and hair everywhere, also queues waiting to use toilets, showers, wash basins. The showers dont have a regular temperature therefore the water is either scalding or freezing my children aged 8 and 5 yrs were crying each time they had to shower because of the water temperatures, definitely not what you expect from a 5* campsite

Pools there is a good selection of pools but not enough room around the pools therefore be prepared to fight for your space which is a regular occurence at the side of the pool, lifeguards aruguing with customers over removing towels from a sunlounger, customers fighting with customers over space, it is so bad you dont even have space to put your towels down and on a Sunday it is chaotic, bordering dangerous there are so many people around the pool seriously overcrowded. Then if you do get lucky enough to get a lounger it is probably broken! Another pool needs to be built to accommodate the numbers on the campsite or the area around the current pools expanded, new loungers are needed, there are broken tiles going up to one of the slides, and the edges of the pools, flower areas need to be cleaned. NOT Good enough by a long shot definitely not 5*

Bar/Restaurant. Met with grumpy staff who are there just to take your money and believe everything in Sequoia is very overpriced!! We asked for a towel/cloth to dry some chairs one evening after some rain, my kids wanted to watch the evening show I was told her colleague had dryed them I explained the tables were dry but not the seats after some huffing and puffing I was reluctanly given some tissue which was fine but why the big drama over it!! Another time I selected the wrong icecream and when I asked to change it again staff were cross and threw the returned icecream back in the fridge with temper and reluctanly gave me the other icecream. Words dont describe the bad attitude. the same attitude is in the restaurant no greeting no chat nothing just order, eat and get out!!!! Oh and overpay for the quality of the food.

Laundry, not enough washers and dryers, you have to pay 8eur to dry one small wash as one dry isnt enough, my thoughts on this is because the vents arent cleaned enough and the washers and dryers are over used , three dryers for the whole campsite. Again Not what you expect from a 5* campsite

Another issue be prepared to be bitten, mosquitos everywhere, I know this isnt a problem Sequoia can deal with but it is something you should be aware of.

My feel on Sequoia is that is WAS a 5* campsite at one stage but over the years it has become 3* quality, money needs to be invested by the owner to bring it back up to 5* quality, new facilities built and the staff need retraining.

Positives
Very pretty flowers around the site
Pitch was a good size
Kids entertainment good

First impression of reception and courtyard bar/shop areas very attractive with lots of flowers. Pool area was excellent, plenty to occupy 2 daughters aged 14 & 12 plus friends. We stayed in our own tent on an enormous pitch which was great and the facilities were fine, usual open air and mixed sex even if they weren't supposed to be!
Drinks at bar extortionate, mosquitos are a problem but you get used to it! We had a great holiday as always, lots of friendly people, but felt once on site and doing the camping thing, this site was no better than the other 7 we have visited in france for the money it costs. Possibly expected better toilet facilities and tidier pitches if had to pick out any faults. Overall, a great holiday on a good site.

Just back from 2 weeks at Sequoia Park and can only say what a great time we had. Our kids age 6 and 8 want to go back! They thought the pool area was amazing and we got plenty of chill out time when we were at the pool as the kids would not get off the slides. I have to comment on the sad people that queued up at 930 to wait for the pool to open to put their towels down. Really?? Would you?? I actually took a few towels off beds when there was clearly no one with them as they had gone back to bed or whatever and we did cheer the day that the lifeguard took all the towels off the saved beds. I suspect if there are no beds you could have word with the lifeguard and they may offer to do that for you. We actually took our own reclining chairs down sometimes or just lay on a towel. I only got really annoyed when one man was saving 4 beds for his 4 kids that spent the whole day in the pool!

There are mozzies, there is no disputing that but take spray, candles etc and you'll be fine. The French pharmacists all generally speak good English and are very knowledgeable on the subject. According to one we spoke to the conditions whilst we were there were optimum for the dreaded mozzies due to baking heat, then rain, then heat. Our biggest 'school boy error' was not spraying ourselves on the day we arrived. That was the day we all got bit the most. We were advised to spray thoroughly three times daily and to make sure you rub it in. Spray hair and clothes too and just inside sleeves, short bottoms, dress bottoms etc.

We tend to pretty independent on holiday so I can't comment on the office staff or reps as we didn't use them. I had a massage which was lovely and the shows were ok. Only watched a few - not quite the West End but good fun. There was a mini disco every night but it was aimed at much smaller children really so we only went once.

A great plus point about this site is the area - so many great places to visit and food to try. I discovered I love oysters and whelks! The mussels are great there too of course.

We ate from the takeaway on site and the pizzas were lovely as were the pasta dishes. An easy option if you don't want to go out and can't be bothered to cook. France is generally expensive but we felt this was slightly cheaper for food and drinks etc than Normandy. We did our 'big shops' at LeClerc in Rochefort and then topped up at the site shop. It was more expensive than the main supermarkets but that's the case the world over!

We visited Royan (nice beach, no waves but a lovely town - great market), La Rochelle (another lovely, historical town), Il' d'Oleron (some brilliant waves for body boarding and surfing), Il de Ray (so nice I would go back for a week and I don't often say that), Rochefort (dinner in the square with a traditional live band - lovely evening), Tremblade (nice little market town and if you head out of town towards the sea there are some lovely looking restaurants and shops), Fort Boyard on a catamaran (fun but not worth the £80 for an hour) and many more that I am sure will come to me when I finish this.

Our kids didn't use the kids club as they tried one last year and have decided they don't like them and I totally agree- there is much fun to be had as a family instead of sending them to a kids club. They made friends by the pool though.

There were tons of children the same age dotted around and they had fun on their bikes and playing ball games etc. There were a number of empty pitches near us where we set up a net and played tennis and badminton.

The 'farm' wasn't all that but a nice distraction for the little ones I guess. I was glad not to be placed near to it though as I imagine the cockerels could be a pain in the morning.

The site was mainly UK and Dutch - we seemed to have been placed amongst mainly Brits - not sure if that is intentional or not.

I wouldn't go back as I don't like going to the same place twice but I would recommend.

Room Tip: I'd ask to not be near the farm.

Just spent 9 lovely nights at Sequoia Parc - 2 in our VW camper and 7 in a 'Junior Cottage Plus'
The pitch for our camper van was a large pitch, conveniently located fairly close to the shower/toilet blocks which were cleaned regularly and in a good state. The 'Junior Cottage Plus' was small but well equipped and was fantastically clean.

Evening entertainment was good but a bit late, started about 10pm!
Pool was great for kids but never managed to get a sun lounger - people queued up to get in there at 10am when it opened!!

We took our bikes which was a great way to get around the Parc and we cycled down to Marennes Plage (beach) on a few occasions. it is about 6 miles but apart from having to cross one busy road the remainder of the journey was on cycle paths, along river banks and on very quiet country roads. It took us (my husband and I plus our 11 year old) about 45mins taking it gently. Buy the cycle map for 50 cents from the information office and follow the route.

Only real downside of the holiday was the MOSQUITOS!! And they were a problem day and night. Only on site though, as soon as we left the site in our camper or on bikes it was fine. Everyone was bitten like mad. Take Mosquito spray with you - strong - and we ended up wearing trousers and long sleeved tops in the evenings.

We found the staff all friendly, the restaurant was lovely (maybe a little pricey) and the site clean, well equipped & spacious.

This site was over-run by Mosquitos. Simply Awful, in many countries/hotels they would have sent a fogging machine out nightly to kill them. But not here.
Avoid this site and indeed the entire area region of France, unless you like getting bitten by Mosquitos'.
If you go, take loads of Citronella Candles (they are expensive in the supermarkets!) /Mossie repellent / hundreds of Piriton tablets / Hydrocortisone cream etc at least two (preferably more) Plug in Mosquito killers and change the tablets minimum twice a day!
Take loads of flyspray - or buy locally - you need around a can every two days if you plan to sit outside, so you can "Fog" any bushes near your pitch/deck and also spray every room of your mobile home/caravan three times daily.
Good facilities, but would benefit from a covered pool area and heating in more of the pool areas.
Couldn't be bothered with the entertainment- due to the swarms of Mosquitos sucking your blood in the evening.
Total lack of information on some of the closest available things to do. - I bet many visitors to Sequoia Parc do not look up the Chateau de la Gautederie (3 miles down the road), and having just looked it up on the internet - its a real shame we missed it! (No info at the site!)
Must do's
Fort Louvois (no info at the site)
Citadelle D'Oleron; (no info at the site)
Catamaran round Fort Boyard (from Boyardville, no info at the site).
Ile D'Oleron Grand Plage - great for bodyboarding

We (2 + 3) stayed for a week in early August in a 6 person cabin. It was functional, clean and relatively comfortable without the luxuries of oven/dishwasher. The pool was a big hit with the children although it was colder then expected (as was the weather to be honest). There are good beaches not too far away and the zoo at Palmyre is worth a visit. Mosquitoes are a problem and I didn't see anyone without bites but this certainly didn't spoil our holiday. Prices (food / bar) appeared a little steep but I have no comparisons. Children said they would go back, so it must have been ok.

Spent a week here in late July. This was a fantastic campsite. The toilet blocks were always clean, the swimming pools were amazing (felt a little like centre parks but with much more), the take away and pool restaurant brilliant. Hope to go again one day
