Hotel Schloss Grubhof
Reviewed 31 October 2012

Let me start by saying the Austrian Alps are magnificent. Our one bedroom apt at Schloss Gubhof had windows to breathtaking mountain views. I spent time just sitting in the window staring... The castle grounds are also lovely, to see, and to walk around. Our apt was perfect for us. Not luxurious but really nice and had everything we needed. Small kitchen, good size living area with flat screen TV (and good reception), separate bedroom and full bath with tub. Nice furnishings. The exterior and interior common areas of the castle are elegant. I felt like royalty as I walked up the beautiful staircases (no elevator) to our apt. This is not a contemporary, state of the art hotel. It is a beautiful castle from another time. Our week here was totally delightful. The castle is well located. St. Martin bei Lofer is a charming small town; Lofer, a bit bigger, is as well. There are grocery stores within walking distance. There are multiple, wonderful sights to see within driving distance: Salzburg, Eis Riesen Welt (amazing ice cave), Salzwerks (salt mine), Berchtesgaden and Hitler's Eagle Nest, and many, many beautiful little towns. For a real treat, take a boat ride on Konigsee. I loved the area and was always happy to get back to our wonderful apt at Schoss Grubhof. Karin, who works in reception but I believe is also overall director/manager was totally efficient. She runs a tight ship and there are rules to follow, but she has much responsibility running this large establishment housing travelers from around the world. She does a great job. My husband and I looked forward to seeing Karin each day. I did not want to leave at the end of our week, and would love to go back. Thank you Karin, if you read this, for your help in making our vacation a truly memorable experience! (P.S. How is Mr. Basil? :-)

Room Tip: If you can get a room that faces the mountains, you will be in heaven!

We stayed at Schloss Grubhof for a week in July via RCI timeshare vacation exchange. The hotel is located perfectly for exploring the Alps, Salzburg, Zell am Zee etc. The scenery is absolutely beautiful as the mountains are rising all over the peaceful valley. Good hiking and running paths and cycling routes start almost from the doorstep.

We got a room from the tower, the highest one with the best view over the valley. It was on two levels and had large windows or three walls. There was also a small balcony on which was lovely to admire setting sun or rising storm. Decoration was a bit worn but it did not matter.

Having over one hundred steps to your room can be challenging when carrying your luggage on arrival and departure, but it did not bother us more than that. We went running on almost every morning (even on rainy days) and the steps offered good additional exercise. And thanks to them, we had total privacy on our room and no neighbors!

The service has been discussed a lot in other reviews, but we did not have any problems. Somehow we did not have time to eat on the restaurant but enjoyed once glasses of wine and bear. The waiter was probably one of the most happiest and friendlies person I have ever met giving also advices where to park when visiting Salzburg.

If you have time to drive around go to alpine roads. Grossglockner is the most exciting with dramatic views. We enjoyed also the Nockalm road which winds in peaceful rural scenery, very beautiful indeed. Watch out for cows, they roam free on Nockalm and may stand on the road.

If you like animals this is the top destination: Gut Aiderbichl farm for homeless animals. It is located in Henndorf near Salzburg. Lots of horses, donkeys, pigs etc. Some of them walk freely on the yard among visitors. Very lovely place for kids and adults.

Room Tip: If you are not afraid of climbing steps, staying at the tower is a nice choice.

We have just returned from our 3 weeks in Europe. One week was here at Schloss Grubhof. Beautiful place and area, but not so good customer service. We were traveling by train and bus from Italy and could be there within 15 min of closing time. I called 30 min prior to closing and let them know we would be a few minutes late due to the bus schedule. I was told she would not wait! I then let her know that I guess we would have to wait until the morning and asked what time they open. I was told they are not there on Sunday and could not come until Monday! We had already paid a full week, so we ended up having to get a hotel for two night in Zell em see. When we arrived the place was gorgeous, but again a polite, but not friendly office. We were also told that they would be closed on Wednesday, so out of a 7 days of paying we had only 4 days of real use. The rooms were unique and beautiful, but there was no activities offered by the place and no sense of community. VERY different than our experience with the RCI in Northern Italy. We had a great time hiking and biking in the area, but if you are looking for kind, good customer service, this is not the place to spend a week. We will not return to this hotel.

We just got back from staying at Schloss Grubhof in Austria. A most beutiful place. Beautiful surroundings. Breathtaking views. Awesome!
July was and is the biggest rain season of the year. Sept. / Oct. is the best time to travel there unless you are a skier.
Even with rainy days, my husband still got a few rounds of golf in. Golf is about E70.00 to 80.00 Euros per 18 holes. Everyone walks....up and down the hills...but you can rent a cart for an extra 25 Euros.
Loved our accommodations. The kitchen was small , no microwave but very sufficient. The staff was very friendly, always ready to help us. They cleaned our room about 2-3 times a week. Karin and Andreas, the managers, work about 10-12 hours a day to keep the front desk and the property at its best.
Advice: Bring your own washcloth. There are no washing machines or dryers on the property or close by.
The restaurant in the Castle (Schloss) is under new management and we liked the food....Lamm, foul, etc.
There is a Grubhof Wellness Center next to the Castle. A place to re juvenate, Sauna and massages. A 90 minute massage is about 98.00 Euros . It has it's own inexpensive restaurant.
Please remember, the stores close on Saturdays at noon and they are not open on Sunday.
Since we arrived early in the day, we went grocery shopping on our way into Lofer.

Places to visit *The Kimmler Waterfalls, near Zell am See (lake). They also have a waterpark with lots of things to entertain children.
*The Salt Mine in Berchtesdaden (great for the entire family) Cannot take pictures inside but they take several pictures of you, riding the train, sliding down slides. You can purchase them for 12 Euros for three pictures.
*The Eagles Nest (a present to Adolf Hitler for his 50. birthday) Way above the alps with a penorama, a feast for the Eye and cameras, Adolf's place itself was bombed and the conference room is now a big restaurant. But the views....breathtaking.
*The Konigsee near Berchtesgaden You can take river cruize or a tram high up and you'll love the view.
*The Ice Cave. I hear it is really something to see. After I heard you have to climb about 700 steps...I bailed out.
Enjoy,
Heidi H.

We stayed in Hotel Schloss Grubhof for a week. Our apartment was what was the main drawing room in the castle/manor house. Our living room was 25x40 with parquet floors, marble columns, 16' ceilings with frescoes, 2D plaster cherubs, flower wreaths and gilt decoration, and Oriental rugs. The furniture was massive and somewhat worn, which was no problem. The place is immaculate and beautifully maintained by a warm, smiling, very hardworking woman. The grounds are fabulous with fountains, statues and park-like lawns. There is a nice restaurant in the building which had dinner only and does not take credit cards. Behind the property is a campground which has a very good, inexpensive restaurant. The Schloss is set in an area with wonderful walking trails and is in-between two lovely Austrian towns which have all amenities. The incredible architecture and history of the place, the soaring mountain peaks and cliffs, the waterfalls, the rushing rivers and the friendly Austrian people make the Schloss Grubhof the amazing place it is. Any little criticisms from unsophisticated people who are used to Marriott Hotels or Motel 6's for that matter should not be taken seriously. This is a fantastic opportunity to live in a genuine castle in a fairy-tale setting. Awesome!

Room Tip: The bigger the better.

unlike what has been written by others, we found this place to be clean tidy and friendly.
The window problem mentioned by others was irrelevant as this was to stop condensation.
we used the heater in the bathroom on 1 overnight and 2-3 when needed but we were never cold.
The lady who assisted us was brilliant and cant fault them in any way.
The kitchen was sufficient for us and we have no complaints just a very good week away.
we were there when it was really cold as most people didnt ski that week. Aparently people were dying from the cold all over Europe but we were ok here and at the resort.
but if you hire a car bear the following in mind, we hired a mini, we couldnt hardly see out of it.

I reserved a studio through Rci. I got an email from the resort that check in should be between 2 pm and 6 pm, saying that if it is not possible, we should call in advance. That is exactly what I did. I got held up before the departure so it was clear that we cannot make it to the hotel in time. I called. A lady answered, and she said it is my problem if we cannot get there in time because she will not wait, a late key pickup is not possible, so we can sleep wherever we want but not there! Great hospitality. So we talked to rci and they were wery helpful and arranged for us to go to Schladming instead, which is a great place. So thumbs up for rci, but they should cancel this hotel from their database.
