“Good Value Stay”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

My heart sank as we parked our car outside. It seemed a far cry from the impressive polished website pictures! I needn't have worried though. Whilst the decor could all do with refreshing the important things were first rate. We were immediately welcomed and shown to our family room which was clean, tidy and comfortable. The various members of staff throughout our stay were extremely friendly and welcoming. The food here is very, very good. Nothing too fancy but real honest home cooked pub-grub. Both the food and drinks on offer are very reasonably priced and there was plenty of choice. Breakfast in particular was most impressive. Beautifully cooked and presented and served with a smile. Our 4 year old was also made to feel most welcome. Even the locals drinking at the bar took time to chat to him and as a result he quickly felt at home.
All in all a good experience with only the proximity of a busy road a bit of a dampener as we needed to keep the windows closed on what was a very hot night.

Room Tip: The rooms do not seem to suffer from noise from the bar or restaurant as they are set off to one sid...

While attending a family wedding in the area my mother and I stayed at The Flying Bull, and we were both delighted that we chose the stay here. On arrival we found that a beer festival and various events were taking place over the weekend, but we were still able to park outside and despite arriving at 1930 were able to easily find a table in the bar for supper.

The food was very good home-cooked pub fare, and the staff always friendly and courteous. Our room was to the side of the pub, and was extremely well appointed with comfortable beds, matching furniture, and an enormous shower room. Wifi was provided for guests, with an excellent fast connection speed - not always the case, even with larger and more expensive hotels. The beer festival featured live music, but this stopped promptly at 1030 and we were not disturbed by the event at all.

The breakfast, served in the restaurant side of the pub, was excellent, with locally-sourced ingredients, including free range eggs from the resident chickens! As well as the traditional full English, a range of cereals, yoghurts, fruit and croissants were available - again the breakfast was much better that many I've had in larger and fancier hotels. The price for the stay was very reasonable given the quality of the room and the service. For a comfortable place to stay with good food and friendly, individual service I would highly recommend The Flying Bull.

We stayed just the one night to break up a trip down south as we had a 6 month old. Chris and Russell were great hosts and couldn't do enough for us - they gave us a family room and had the travel cot already to go when we arrived. The room was excellent - very clean and tidy, comfortable bed, free wifi, tea & coffee ready to go and a big bathroom. Very family friendly pub and the meal there was excellent. Great menu and the food was lovely. Again, the breakfast was fantastic in the morning. Great place to stay - highly recommend it. Thank you Chris & Russell!

Stayed here whilst attending a wedding reception in the pub. The room was tastefully decorated, very clean and had everything I needed, including nice hot shower, iron and board, hairdryer, plenty of tea and coffee and free wifi. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. Being a smoker, I especially like that my door was on the outside of the building, so I could just step outside for my fix!

The pub was very nice too, nice food and pleasant atmosphere.

The final point I would like to make is how accommodating the owner and all the staff were.

I would definately stay here again.

Stayed for 1 night in the double room "Devon" outside in the carpark. The room was lovely, smartly decorated to a high finish, nicely cleaned and there was ample coffee/tea with the in-room kettle as well as hot chocolate which is a rarity. Plus free wifi which is always a bonus! The bathroom was also decorated to a high finish and well cleaned. Although I was one of the rooms next to the carpark, the carpark/road did not affect my sleep either.

The welcome was very good and the service for dinner and breakfast also very good.

I had no complaints with the food, very nice quality, large portions in the main, locally sourced ice-cream was rich and creamy. Only slight grumble was the waitress got our order slightly wrong, missed off a starter and gave us new potatoes rather than the chips that were asked for, however this was rectified swifty.

Overall this was a very nice stay in a very nice pub. I would recommend it to anyone for business, weekends away or longer stays. I myself will be going back with work again in the weeks to come. Very pleased.

We had the good fortune to stay here over the Easter Bank holiday week-end and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left we could not fail to be impressed by the friendliness of the welcome from Russell and Chris as well as their staff. We haven't been here for about 2 years so the changes to décor and furnishings are a pleasure to behold.
We stayed in "Devon" which was perfect for our needs - everything had been laid out ready for our arrival and both bedroom and bathroom were spotless. As we had an engagement in Liss that evening we did not eat but do not be discouraged reader, as the cooked breakfast the following morning was excellent as was the service provided by the breakfast lady!
Had we have managed to operate the radiator or maybe it wasn't switched on(?) - it is still a bit chilly late at night - we would be marking this up as a 5 - even so it is still a 4.5 review and we will return!
