“What they do they do very well”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

We love the Goutorbe champagne, so wanted to visit Ay on our way South. The hotel was very comfortable and spacious. We enjoyed some champagne in the courtyard, and the receptionist was able to recommend a few restaurants. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The garage parking across the road was great, as the temperatures were pretty high!

We stayed here for a couple of nights and thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility that it offered. Our room was above the swimming pool and was clean and comfortable. The staff were excellent and very helpful. Madame Goutourbe was very pleasant and we took a tour of the Goutourbe champagne house just down the road from the hotel. We brought back a few bottles of her champagne and are now enjoying them at home.
Although the hotel does not have a restaurant the receptionist was able to recommend a few eateries all within easy walking distance.
The hotel is very conveniently situated for Epernay.
A real bonus to us was the secure free parking in the hotel's garage just across the road.
We would certainly like to return.

Our return visit to this very comfortable accommodation located in the small town of Ay (where the Bollinger offices are - to name but one of maybe dozens!)There is no restaurant (although breakfast can be pre-booked) but there is an indoor swimming pool! Recently converted and re-furbished to a very high standard by the private owners (who also own an adjacent Champagne winery.)This is an excellent stay when visiting the region.Good Facilities, especially the shower etc, comfortable large bed.Rooms moderately priced at between 120-180 Euros excluding breakfast.A stroll into the the village for dinner - we recommend the simple "Le Resto d'Ay" where the food is fresh and inexpensive.
Don't tell too many people!!!

My husband and I stayed here along with 2 other friends, during a few days of extensive visits to champagne houses. We were really busy so we actually didn't have a ton of time to spend around the hotel. But it was a very nice place for a home base. The staff was really friendly, particularly Madame Goutourbe. They did a very nice job with the renovation of this place, as evidenced by the photos in their photo album chronicling the transformation. I really wanted to use the pool that's in a nice glass enclosure but just couldn't muster up the energy. Too bad, because it looked beautiful. Breakfast was pretty good. Very cute place, nice people, and clean. I would recommend it.

Very much enjoyed staying here during a weekend in Champagne. Our room (15) was very nice, clean, large sparkling clean & modern bathroom, with sufficient amenities. Staff was welcoming and accommodating. The breakfast was good. Would definitely recommend and return again.

This little hotel is in Aÿ, a small village/town to the east of Epernay, one of the twin centres of the Champagne region (the other being Reims, half an hour to the north). Aÿ is a lovely place to stay - tranquil, removed from the bustle of the city but with plenty of welcoming champagne houses that offer tours/tastings. In fact, the Castel Jeanson is owned by the Goutorbe family, makers of an excellent range of champagnes grown in the district (Aÿ is one of the 17 top-rated villages for champagne vines).

The hotel is on a quiet street on the north side of the village, with ample free parking provided in a secure garage just across the street. We received a warm welcome on arrival and were shown to a comfortable "classic room" on the second floor - I don't know if the hotel has been recently refurbished, but everything was absolutely spotless and the bathroom was gleaming as if brand new.

The amenities were excellent with an amazing indoor pool with frescos around the pool - what a superb way to unwind at the end of a hectic day's champagne tasting! Talking of which, ask at reception and if you're lucky you may be able to go on a free guided tour of the Goutorbe cellars, carved into the chalk under the village - a great way to get a real connection to the wonderful world of champagne.

Breakfast is available in a room off the reception area and there's a small bar area where you can get free tea/coffee or buy champagne, brandy etc.. There are a few restaurants within a short stroll of the hotel - cafés and an amazing patisserie in the main square, and the truly superb Aux Vieux Puits restaurant...expensive, but worth every penny for the amazing dining experience.

Considering the location, quality of service and rooms, and the excellent indoor pool, this is great value for money - I would stay at the Castel Jeanson again without hesitation. It's a great place if you like a bit of peace and quiet but want to go and tour the beautiful champagne region at your leisure.

We (2 couples over 50) had to spend an extra couple of nights in France at the end of our month long holiday due to rescheduling isues with Air Mauritius and chose to make the most of this opportunity by travelling to the Champagne region as our apartment in Paris was not available for the extra nights.
I researched hotels and B&Bs for some time concentrating on Epernay and stumbled upon this hotel in Ay, just out of Epernay and I'm glad we did.
The town is lovely, quiet and country, minutes from the hustle and glamour of some of the biggest and best known Champagne houses. The hotel is bright, clean, recently renovated (an undertaking you begin to understand if you have time to sit in the front lounge and view the album of before and after photos) and our room was well equipped with a spacious clean bathroom. We had a hire car and the hotel had a large, well sign posted secure garage with lots of room (unusual in small French towns!)
The delightful young woman (whose name to my chagrin I cannot remember, my apologies!) on the front desk was extremely helpful and within minutes of our arrival and enquiry about any local champagne tastings, she had arranged with the hotel's owners, also vignerons, for a tour and tasting a stone's throw from the hotel.
Rene and Nicole Goutorbe were very welcoming even though we had not booked and it was 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Nicole's english was flawless and as she had travelled to Australia we could share a memory or two with her. We also loved the champagne and wished our duty free limits enabled us to bring some home.
After the hectic day we returned to the hotel for a swim in the lovely, glassed indoor pool, had a drink in the lounge and headed off to dinner at a local restaurant that had booked for us. She also booked our tour at 2 of the big Champagne Houses for us next day in Epernay.
It would be a great base for touring in Champagne, all in all a hidden gem!
