“Relaxing and authentic”
Reviewed 22 December 2013

+ Very nice place far away from tourists. It is a quiet place on the lake. Very nice for some kayak, a tour on the lake with abel (very nice guide) and reading a book in the hammacs. The place is clean and the rooms are very big. The food of the place is very good. The staff is nice and very helpful.
A nice place to stay and relax.

- Choose for a lake view room if you don't want a kitchen view.
There isn't a lot of attractions nor activities around the hotel.
I would not recommend the massage that aren't made by professionals with cheap ingredients.
The jacuzzi/pool is very badly maintained. The water has a very bad smell and the water has a green trouble aspect. Better to go for a swim in the lake.
You also hear the road from far away...

We stayed for two nights in the suite. It was 4,788 pesos/400 USD total for both nights.

We checked in pretty easy. Pleasant service. They helped us with our bags to the room.

THE ROOM
We had splurged on the suite for our anniversary. It was pretty spacious and definitely clean. The room was actually quite nice. It had a living room and a king sized bed, a fan, AC, a nice, large shower. Our toilet wasn't working, but they fixed it as soon as we reported it. They gave us only 1 tiny bottle of shampoo for two people for two nights, which I found to be ridiculous. Thankfully, we had brought our own everything. The bed was very firm and so were the pillows. They made me wake up all achy. We had two closets, which were quite nice. Our room had a tiny, little private pool with an outdoor patio and a private hammock. We couldn't enjoy it because of the mosquitoes.

My husband was going to take a shower on one of the mornings, when he was startled by a GIANT spider in the corner of the shower. He smashed it with a shoe and left it there as evidence. It was huge/scary... like a medium sized, tarantula. We don't know how it got in. We were being paranoid over keeping the bugs outside! It is the jungle, though.

THE RESTAURANT/FOOD
We only ate there for breakfast, which was included in the room rate (which normally would cost $150 pesos/person). The orange juice was fresh squeezed orange juice. They served the basics in a buffet style: eggs, chilaquiles, beans, toast, fried plantains, fruit, yogurt, cereal, coffee, etc). It was pretty tasty.

We considered eating there for the rest of the meals, but thought everything was WAAAAAY over priced compared to the prices in town. Both of us ate VERY well, in town, for the cost of half of one of their entrees.

DISAPPOINTMENT
Our room was over priced for what we got. We stayed at a nicer and bigger place for 3 nights for the cost of ONE night here at a much bigger city. It was a 3+ hour drive there.

It turns out that during our stay, there was some kind of weather issues that caused the water to lose its beautiful colors. All we saw was nasty green water. We were going to renew our vows there, based on all the beautiful pictures that we had seen of that place. It didn't happen. That is not the hotel's fault, I understand.

The mosquitoes there are a huge problem too. We would spray and respray ourselves with repellent and they would still eat us. We constantly had to kill them in our room, no matter how hard we worked to keep them out of there.

I couldn't wait to get out of there!

Our favorite part of the visit was the town of Bacalar and all the nice people we met. We also took a boat trip that was NOT part of the hotel for much cheaper.

Room Tip: Don't get the suite. Just get a simple room with AC. Make sure to check your room for possible o...

We attended a wedding at this hotel. The meal was served by the hotel, here is where the surprises began. We started with an excellent ceviche, Adelina, and ended with one of the best cheesecakes I've ever tried, it was topped with a guava jelly prepared at the hotel. A couple of days later we returned to stay for one night. We had lunch, dinner, breakfast and lunch, always excellent. We stayed in a room built in the traditional mayan way, the roof was a palapa, very well constructed, the room didn't need AC. The bathroom was spacious and it had a king bed and a couple of twins. A very good distribution if you are traveling with kids. The room also had a small living room and a terrace with a couple of hamocs. Since it is by the lagoon you can go kayaking in very tranquil waters. The Bacalar lagoon is absolutely beautiful. Go before the local government messes all.

Room Tip: Choose a palapa room close to the lagoon

Mechanical problems on the airplane, luggage that followed an hour later, missed bus connection, 5.5 hour bus ride beginning at 10:30pm, the "Muppet Movie" being played at 12am on the bus (really!?!!!), a taxi driver who said he knew where he was going....but didn't....a taxi cab that had no working fuel gage, or speedometer, and wheel bearings that were beginning to burn.....we finally made it to Rancho Encantado.....at 5:30am. Over 24 hrs of traveling, and we just wanted a bed.

We were met as soon as we pulled up, key waiting, shown to our room...and thankfully our bed! a couple hours of sleep and time for breakfast. Nice little buffet, nothing grand, and ohhhh what a view for breakfast.

Peaceful, quiet and very relaxing, just what we needed. We stayed in cabin 9, at night you could hear the highway, especially the larger trucks with their air brakes, during the day though we didn't even notice the traffic noise. Swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding all on the lagoon was at treat, especially first thing in the mornings 6-7 am, the lagoon is tranquil and glassy. Hammocks at your cabin or on the dock were great for reading or just daydreaming.

Couldn't do the boat trip, as there was a terrific thunderstorm on the day we had planned for it. We did take a trip to the ruins, really lucked out as we were the ONLY ones at the site. Talk about a "private" tour. Our guide Louis was excellent.

Water presussure for the shower was low, nice hot water. Rooms are clean and roomy. Dinner was very good, I had the fish with garlic most nights, hubby got other dishes, and we were not disappointed.

We are ready for the next bus ride now!!

Room Tip: Being on the lagoon is very nice. We were here in Nov and the ceiling fan was just right. No need fo...

We stayed 3 days in this hotel and enjoyed it very much. We the parents relaxed at the hammocks while the kids were busy with the kayaks and the pedal boat. The restaurant has excellent food and the waiters are very helpful and friendly. The rooms in the back have A/C and are very clean.

The boat trip to the cenotes and the pirat channel is worth it

A superb hotel with very competent and helpful staff. The room (we had the laguna one for 4) was beautiful, very comfortable and the fact that it doesn't have aircon is no problem at all as the fans are very effective and you get the wind from the lac. The restaurant is also a great value with simple but good and affordable food. I would say that this hotel alone is worth a trip to Bacalar, the laguna is great but there is not many place to see or things to do except swimming in the laguna (don't know how Bacalar village got to be a pueblo magico, it's quite ugly!) and for this activity, El rancho is the perfect and actually, the only worth option.

Room Tip: do prefer the laguna room

The hammocks just in front of the lagoon are the best place to read, relax and enjoy. The rooms were very big, nice decoration and really clean!
