“Highly managed 'natural' area”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

This is a beautiful area, but not exactly wild, at least not in the main park area. The Azusa river is clear and rushes by, the mountain peaks tower above and the marked walking path is pleasant enough. It is not a wilderness experience, but it has its interesting points. We were able to see the fabled monkeys foraging in the river for some type of tidbits. We even saw a mother with a baby - very cute! Be advised that getting into the park is expensive: ¥500 to park and about ¥1000 per person each way on a bus. No private cars are allowed.

“Alpine scenery at its best”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

Visited for a few hours between takayama and Matsumoto. Bus links straightforward with Nohi bus, and luggage storage area in kamikochi. Great weather during our visit and stunning alpine scenery. Walked for a couple of hours, but plenty of other walks in the area if you have longer.

“Must go during visit to matsumoto”

A nature paradise, you will be able to have view of snowy mountains and crystal clear water, but be prepared as you will have to walk quite a long distance.

“A must-see for all nature lovers”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

Kamikochi was the absolute highlight of our entire trip to Japan! I was blown away by the beauty and purity of the forest, rivers, mountains and snow. The hiking trails are well maintained and incredibly clean (especially when you consider there is not a single garbage can in sight; you're obliged to take your garbage back home). There are some public restrooms, shops and restaurants near the bus station. Be sure to check the weather forecast (I didn't, and I ended up with soaking wet sneakers...).

One last tip: if you arrive by bus from Shinshimashima, you have to order a numbered boarding pass for the ride back.

“good walk”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

My advice about this walk is to take the hut walk - the walk around the river you can do later

take some clothes in case the weather sets in but its easy (although you may feel it the next day)

Loved the images and there is a photo opportunity at every curve
