“Like living in Uruguay for awhile...”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

We spent 3 nights at El Ceibo in late December and absolutely loved it. It is not a "hotel" in any way or a commercial-type dude ranch. This family is sharing their home and property with you in a friendly, intimate way. It's more like a home stay. You can do as much or as little as you wish.

Joselo will find a horse that fits your ability and you can simply ride around the area or herd cattle and sheep. The co-owner, Carmen, speaks fluent English and is very helpful in every way you could hope for. Joselo speaks primarily Spanish and it was good practice to hang out with him; their son does indeed do an amazing job of translating as another guest mentioned. There is a wonderful cook in residence, Beatrice, and the food is fantastic and plentiful. There's also good wine with every meal and cold beers in the fridge.

Ask them about the amazing church in Florida that contains offerings people have made over the years. It's hard to explain, but definitely a MUST SEE experience.

Carmen was great prior to the trip in terms of email and was also available by phone when we got to Montevideo. El Ceibo is an aspect of Uruguay well worth exploring and we are so thankful we stayed there.

My wife and I stayed at El Ceibo for 2 nights in late January. It was exactly what we needed, after spending so many nights in the larger cities of both Argentina and Uruguay. It was great to be in the country for a couple of days and experience a part of Uruguay that many travellers probably don't see. I would recommend for everyone travelling there to get out of the cities for a while and stay on an estancia. It was very worthwhile for us. I would highly recommend staying at El Ceibo, it's definitely not a budget hostel but I felt that it was worth the cost. We felt as though Joselo and Carmen treated us like family during our stay. We enjoyed eating dinner with their family and getting to know them quite well. Carmen was so friendly and gladly took us for a tour of their nearby city, Florida. She was also very helpful, assisting us in planning the rest of our trip in Uruguay. And Joselo was great on the farm, taking us horseback riding and showing us around the property explaining the history of the place. It was good practice for our understanding of Spanish, and whenever we didn't understand something, their son Juan Martin was happy to translate for us. Their farm is a beautiful property with several hundred year old trees dotting the fields where cows are grazing. We were very impressed with how well they treated their animals and we fell in love with their 2 dogs, Rex and Tito. They would follow us whenever we went for walks on the farm.
Rex is probably the cutest dog that we'd ever seen. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the meals. Beatrice is an amazing cook and the meals we had were some of the best that we ate in all of Uruguay and Argentina. And the last night of our stay they had a real Asado(barbeque) for us with all kinds of different meats. It was delicious! Overall, we had a wonderful stay at El Ceibo and hope to return there on our next visit to Uruguay. Thanks Carmen and Joselo for an amazing 2 days!

a difficult one to write as we had a wonderful stay and I know that owners Carmen and Josello are anxious for more English language reviews. We stayed over new year and perhaps saw more of the family than would be normal as they are professionals and have a place in Florida and businesses in the nearby town. We made a new friend whislt staying and followed that up with a meet in Argentina ( Hi Kristina). There are many more than the 30 species of birds seen in the immediate grounds although other fauna struggle against illegal hunting. It's full board including your favourite tipples, three meals a day if you could handle it, the family and their staff are all charming and did everything they could to help us enjoy our stay. It's almost a hobby farm really, don't expect the wilderness experience and gauchos although both exist. I can relate to several simliar set up we have stayed at where the personality of the owners is important and the atmosphere essential. Humming birds and Uruguayan wine is a good mix, if you eat little and drink seldom it would probably detract from the value or experience, whiskey drinkers are well catered for, the children were an advert for ideal Uruguyan youth and a credit to their parents. If I stopped writing now I know you enjoy the experience but I hope I can make suggestions. The bedroom accomodation needs a better mix of rustic against crumbling, the bathroom needed total renewal with low pressure an electric shower would be needed. I would replace the out of use fountain in the garden with a small pool and a couple of loungers. The mix of rustic charm and modern facilities would be enhanced if the owners check out similar places world wide but don't let that stop you, other rooms have better showers we hear and we wouldn't have missed our stay for the world.

Room Tip: There will be cocks crowing outside you door, cows mooing, horses.. ok you get the drift , it is a f...

I am sitting in the shade, under a 200 year old wisteria plant, and the only sounds I hear are the neigh-ing of a few horses, the chirping of the birds, and the distant moo-ing of the cows. Sitting with a thermos of hot water, yerba mate, and a bombilla to sip this national drink/pastime of Uruguay, I’m decompressing and detaching myself from the activity and business of Montevideo and transporting myself back over 150 years to when this oasis of tranquility…..El Ceibo…..was built and served as an important “istancia” (ranch.)

For just a few days, I am imagining a life as a “gaucho, ” riding horses, herding cattle, repairing fences, eating enormous quantities of grilled meat, lamb, fresh fruit and vegetables, hot muffins. Imagining, but not actually doing it (well, I am actually doing the eating part), because we are B&B guests here at El Ceibo, in the competent, gracious and welcoming hands of the owners, Carmen and Josello and their staff, Fernandez (who actually does all the things I imagined above) and his wife, Juana, who prepares all the delicious meals.

On the 200 hectares of land that comprises El Ceibo, you can ride horses, swim in the river and the lagoon, bird-watch the many species of the area, participate in the life of a gaucho (cowboy) go fishing in the day or night, take walks in the woods to see and learn about the flora and fauna of Uruguay. Josello told me that he takes groups on horseback for six days, riding 40 kms. per day for real enthusiasts, as well as short excursions, individually and in groups.

Most people who come for a vacation to Uruguay see Montevideo, Punta del Este and perhaps Colonia and never see or experience the “real Uruguay” of times present and past. Less than 90 minutes away from Montevideo is Florida, the historical center of rural life, with large farms and ranches. It is this region that produces the world-famous meat and dairy of Uruguay and, at the same time, provides an ambience of complete peace and distance from a frenetic world, a life more in sync with nature. El Ceibo has 5 rooms and can accommodate 12 people, so it can serve for a small group, or be an intimate get-away for a couple or two. The rooms are simple, clean, still in the traditional style with antiques, very comfortable. The food is bountiful, fresh and delicious. The service is excellent, warm and friendly. I absolutely recommend it for at least a few days while you’re in Uruguay. See: www.elceibo.com.uy for more information. We loved it here.
