“Brilliant best hostel I've stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014 via mobile

We stayed four nights in double rooms at wild spirit. The place is lovely, large terrace with tables and sofas overlooking the canopy, cheap bar and organic meals cooked. Free WiFi and book exchange and activities like star gazing and bongo circle and walks in the forest. Great staff and volunteers who are really interesting to talk to and informative about the eco and sustainable hostel. Rooms good sized and clean. They have everything, yoga room, firepit every evening with great comany, free canoe rental etc etc. So many lovely walks close by. I can't fault this place and would stay forever if I could.

First off I'd like to say the staff were friendly and the surrounding forest and views were spectacular....however, the rooms are in definate need of an upgrade. The curtains were mouldy, there was an unsightly mould patch on the ceiling above our bed and our window could not close properly so we had a cold draught breezing through our room all night...An extra blanket on the bed would have definately made our evening a lot warmer! The shower was also in need of a good scrubbing as there was also mould on the shower walls....I suggest getting some of those contraptions that absorbs excess moisture to combat the mould issue. The dinner also lacked any effort-a salad that was evidently hastily thrown together complete with pap and mushy potjie. The dessert was unappetizing.....im still not even sure what the cornstarch chocolate flavoured stuff was.A little bit of extra effort to ensure the guests utmost comfort would boost this place up there with the best of them. We did enjoy the forest walk and the driftwood sculptures were amazing....Id like to see the same effort go into the standard of quality in the rooms....at R400 a night they should at the very least be clean and free of mould.

Dear Gabrielle,

Thanks a lot for your review. I am very sorry to hear that your experience wasn’t very good. I wish you had told us about it when you were here, so that we could have done something to make your stay more enjoyable or have offered you a discount.

The mould in the room is definitely not good and we appreciate your having brought it to our attention. After we read your comment, we immediately went to check everywhere and gave everything a big clean. I am very sorry that you were in that room where it was a bit mouldy.
My apologies for the meal as well. We always try to make a well-balanced, delicious-tasting meal. This might have been a busy evening when not enough attention was paid to this aspect. So I am very sorry for your experience.

Thanks again for giving an honest review. And please be assured that we are constantly trying to improve the standards of the rooms and have recently welcomed to our team an experienced chef, so the quality of food will improve from now on.

We hope to welcome you again at Wild Spirit so that you can experience it the way it should be.
Best wishes,

Jenny Lawrence – Owner of Wild Spirit Backpackers.

Our family loved our time at Wild Spirit. The staff were genuinely friendly and very accomodating of our needs. Lots of hikes right there on the property, amazing views, free wifi, drinks available, and a true family feel. Highly recommend taking the dinner option - food was excellent and quite nice to share the meal with other guests on the deck.

Wild Spirit is a very special place, as everyone immediately understands when she or he is coming to Wild Spirit. Georgeous landscape, very nice view from Wild Spirit's bar of mountains and indigenous forest. We met so many interesting people at this wonderful place, many were engaged in environmental or social projects, some also interested in spirituality. We stayed almost 2 weeks and did not regret a single day.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have excellent location

Upon arrival as we walked through, I had flash backs of recently watching true detective in the way some of the wooden features were bound together. This had no bearing on what was a charming place, with super helpful staff, a real community feel and lots of things to do in and around. Food was good, both evening meal and breakfast with superb views. The only think that freaked me was the spider the size of a monkey I found in the bathroom while taking an early morning leak, but staying in the woods it's to be expected. Useful instructions on the wall indicated it wasn't poisonous. Overall exceptional value and a good choice to stay to explore the area further.

We're writing this after our 4th night here and we have two left - we don't want to go! They say if you are planning your next holiday while still on the current one then it really is that good! We are staying in the same room as before (Dove Middle) which is a double bed with an en-suite. Everything is as clean and the backpackers in general as magical as when we were last here 6 months ago.

We have gone for a beautiful walk every morning to the Natures Way Farmstall down the road (15mins) and if you like cows, rabbits, guinea pigs, a simple menu and don't mind a cat sleeping on your table during your meal then you will love this spot. We also got some delicious homemade pies to take-away for dinner a few times.

We found more to do, see and explore this time around and we will be back for sure! September 2014 is already calling us! Thank you Wild Spirit for relaxing our minds, bodies and souls :)

Room Tip: There are rules of no excessive noise after 11pm and people are amazing at keeping to that. We have...

We read about the special atmosphere, but it was a little bit different than we expected. First to say, it is a beautiful place, stunning views of the hills, star gazing, friendly people, very good dinner (cooked every night in traditional way), really nice deck with bar. But it is a very hippie-like. You have to love it. It can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning, at least it was for us (not so hippie-like people). We had a double room with private bathroom, which was nice, but a bit moisty (our quick-dry-towels weren't dry after a day). Close to Knysna and Tsitikamma, where you can have nice hikes. Also very close to the highest bungee bridge in the world (big adrenaline kick!).
