La Biosfera Mountain Retreat

All the people at La Biosfera were great to hang out with and talk to. They are only just beginning but I would really recommend stopping by if your near Esteli, Jinotega, or Matagalpa. One of the people showed me the cloud forest bat cave and showed me all around. A real family like environment.

Room Tip: If your a couple you might want to choose the cabin further in the forest but if your looking for ju...

I've been staying at La Biósfera for nearly two weeks now and it's been a really perfect place to have a 'soft landing' in Nicaragua. On the side of a mountain on 22 acres, it has hiking trails, a bat cave, and organic agriculture. It offers a really peaceful, cool, and relaxing rural experience. But at the same time, it's within walking distance (4km) of Jinotega, with all of its amenities -- something a lot of more rural type farms or retreat centers can't offer. The location is fantastic both for folks looking to stay in Jinotega or for people looking for a more rural experience -- it could easily serve either purpose.

Run by an American ex-pat, Suzanne is full of stories and is incredibly helpful and flexible. There's plenty of volunteer opportunities around the finca which is great in that it allowed me to stay for a much cheaper rate while helping out around the property -- I think that staying for a work-exchange / volunteer set-up would probably be the best way to experience the property, since there's plenty to do and it's such a good value.

I would highly recommend Biósfera to any traveler in Northern Nicaragua, and especially considering the quality of some of the hotels in town in Matagalpa I witnessed this is a much better experience!

Room Tip: I stayed in the backpacker cabin with others but you can camp, or stay in the matrimonial suite (a p...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
La Biosfera Reserve & Retreat is a volunteer supported initiative in forest preservation, clean water cultivation, and poverty alleviation. It features an earthbag lodge, compost toilets, recycled truck tire belts stretched over 400-yr old zapotillo wood bunks, camping, glamping, libraries, telescopes, board games, puzzles, art supplies, temescal, plunge pool, trails, waterfalls, cave, alternative healing therapies, some philosophy and astronomy orientation, and great meals. Targeted to the somewhat budgeted, it should be noted that it is a project with a rotation of volunteers, apprentices, and occasional tourists; as such, travelers should treat it as an educative adventure or retreat from the material world, rather than a 5-star resort. ... more   less
