Description: The Fox and Hounds is a family run CAMRA award winning public house in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The Fox and Hounds offers a range of cask real ales including 2 locally brewed guest beers. It also has a home cooked food menu using local ingredients. Delicious traditional pub food is served daily from midday to 2pm, then from 6pm to 9pm. Bookings not necessary but recommended for larger parties.

Great pub , can see why it is a CAMRA pub, great beer, staff great, lots to look at, full of walkers and elderly bikers and I would happy spend all day/night with friends drinking some well kept and good beer. What let it down for me was the quality of the food, it's not expensive , but pretty bulk standard, you just wanted it to be better to go with what is a really nice pub. I would go back again, but just for the beer.

We stayed in West Witton for two nights, at the Old Star just over the road (see my review). We spent both evenings in the Fox and Hounds. The food is excellent: good honest fresh pub food at a reasonable price. We sampled four different dishes across the two evenings (£7-8) and each were excellent, and all including very fresh vegetables. The beer is local and very well kept, and the staff and locals we found to be friendly. We will definitely be visiting this gem of a pub again when we are next in Wensleydale.

It looks nice from the outside, and inside is ok, but we expected more from the food. Very average quality. It was busy, which is a good sign, but that did create quite a wait. The staff were nice but looked quite stressed out so maybe more hands required. If we were in the area again we would possibly pop in, if just for a nice drink.

The atmosphere and the real ales were great and we would probably drink there again. The food, on the other hand was terrible. We thought the pricing was fine, until the food arrived which was definitely not worth the money. Cheap, tasteless food that was badly prepared and presented.

We stopped in here for dinner one night and discovered that the food is very cheap compared to what we were expecting. Its quite quaint inside and the selection of ales is good as well as soft drinks. Staff were ok, not overly friendly but not bad either.

However the food I thought was extremely basic but then I guess you get what you pay for, so if your happy to pay for cheap and expect it then its not a problem. Portions are small and I got the distinct impression that they had been on a trip to 'Iceland' and then just cooked it all on request. Which is fine but not quite what I expected.

Please bare in mind, this pub does not accept card only cash! Which I found very bizarre and meant we had to count out our combined change to work out what we could afford! There doesn't appear to be a cash point in the village so make sure you have cash on you.

Hi Nicpea27,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of The Fox. We're glad you thought that the pub was nice. Sorry that you didn't enjoy your food very much. We have never heard anyone complain about food being cheap before, so that's a new one to us! There is another restaurant in the village, The Wensleydale Heifer, which serves 'fine dining' meals with a much higher price point. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who isn't looking for the kind of 'pub grub' that we serve.

Some of our menu items are bought in, however they are not from Iceland but from a local catering company. There are quite a few items on our menu that are home-made, however, and these are clearly marked. It's a shame that you didn't try one of these if you were looking for something that was made in-house.

Sorry about the lack of card facilities. This is something we are considering in the future, however at the moment the vast majority of our customers carry and pay with cash. The village itself is very small so that is the reason that there is no ATM - there are a few ATMs in Leyburn, which is 4 miles away. We have put posters up near the menu explaining that we don't accept card, so that diners can make an informed decision before they order their food.

Thank you and all the best.
