Cathedral Peaks B&B
Ranked #4 of 5 Manapouri B&B and Inns
Reviewed 10 July 2012

Far more appealing than noisier Te Anau, Manapouri is a charming lakeside town on the edge of nowhere, the perfect place to spend a couple of nights when heading for the Doubtful Sound. Cathedral Peaks fits right in with this theme, being a delightful little B&B overlooking the lake and wihtin a 2 minute drive of your departure.

I'm not a big fan of B&B's in general as you really are staying in someone else's house, but Janice makes you feel right at home with a slap up breakfast, big clean, well equipped with a stunning lakeside view and stackful of DVDs for a quiet night in. On top of it all we got a free upgrade! We were delighted with our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a lakeside room. The view is stunning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night in Manapouri. We chose the B&B as it was close to the departure point for our cruise on Doubtful Sound. Janice gave us a very friendly welcome and even looked out some DVDs for us to watch as my wife mentioned she was in the mood to watch a film. She also gave us some good tips of places to see in our short time in the area and we made the short drive to Te Anau which was not far at all. The breakfast was a really high standard and we also had a few snacks and things in the room which was a nice touch. I would stay again and would recommend to anyone. Only slight issue was that I would say that it is slightly expensive but all in all I'd say it was good value.

We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed this wonderful place.
We had a lovely room with a picture window which overlooked the beautiful lake.
Janice is a very friendly host with very high standards; her home is spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. She enjoys sharing her wealth of knowledge about the area and will help you book trips which are right for you, simply ask for her advice when you book.
Janice serves a delicious breakfast, complete with muffins - as her breakfast was so big we ate the muffins later. Breakfast is served in the spacious guest lounge which also has large picture windows.

Like others who have reviewed Cathedral Peaks we very much enjoyed our stay. We had one of the downstairs rooms looking over the lake which was lovely. Janice had added thoughtful touches such as fruit juice, fruit and chocolates and an assortment of teas and coffee. The bathroom had lovely lavendar soap, body lotion etc and a towel warmer which is always a plus in a bathroom. The whole place was spotless. The breakfast was extremely good, cereal and then a cooked to order breakfast with the most delicious muffins. We could never manage our muffins at breakfast and so Janice packed them up for us to have later when we were out and about. She was very helpful in her advice as to what we might like to explore.

As there is a not a lot to do after dinner in Manapouri we tended to come back to our room and although we are not great watchers of TV when we are on holidays it is sometimes nice to put your feet up. The TV in our room was very small and rather high up but Janice has said that this will be rectified soon.

We went to the pub down the road for a couple of meals and found them to be very good value and the staff very helpful. On a lovely summer's evening it would be wonderful to sit outside. It was a bit cool for that but the windows overlook the lake. For those who want other options for a meal Te Anau is a short drive and has lots of restaurants.

We chose to see Doubtful Sound on Doubtful Sound Cruises because they are a smaller family business and on a smaller boat. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and we can recommend buying your lunch from them as for $20 it was incredible value and we actually had some of it later. The staff on this cruise was very friendly and helpful.

We hired the water taxi one morning or one can row across the river and from there is a walking track which takes about 3 - 4 hours. Its well sign posted and is a bit of a climb up to the top but it was worth it as we went through a lovely woodland walk with an incredible amount of different mosses covering the ground. One of the best parts was that we saw only a handful of other people.

Room Tip: Our room was on the ground floor with a wonderful view across the lake.

I think muffins are great to eat at any time of the day.
The 32 inch TVs in the down stairs rooms will make TV viewing a lot more enjoyable.
I love the view from the top of the Circle Track but yes its a bit of a walk.
I am happy you enjoyed your stay.

We had a warm welcome when we arrived and Janice's place. We were showed to our room with the basket with "goodies", all sorts of nice things to eat. The room had a great view at the lake and downstairs in the diningroom, the view at the lake was tremendous. We also could use the laptop whenever we wanted. The washing machine was at our disposal, too. And even when we wanted to get the 7 o’çlock boat to Doubtful Sound, it was no problem for Janice to have our breakfast ready at 6.30 am. And breakfast was delicious every time again. We had a great stay and you will as well.

The upstairs room has a lovely view of the lake and the Hunter Mountain Range and quite different from the down stairs rooms.
The 7am cruise does make for an early start but well worth the effort.
I 'm pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.

we had 3 great nights at Cathedral peaks. Janice couldnt have been more welcoming. the bedroom had everything to offer and more - teas, fruit, buiscuits etc etc. Janice served us the best breakfast so far in NZ - including home made muffins every day, and still warm! - and then came into the breakfast room to offer advice on our day - where to go, what to see etc etc. The house is newly built, modern and most comfortable and every room on the front of the house has a magnificent view over lake manapouri.

We loved it and it was worth every penny. Thank you Janice.

Room Tip: choose one of the rooms overlooking the lake - you might even see a hedgehog, we did!

We stayed just one night before an overnight trip to Doubtful Sound. Janice has a lovely home which is impeccably clean and maintained to a high standard. She has taken great care with the rooms (snacks, assorted teas, coffee, complementary juice), the bathroom (dressing gowns, ironing board, extra towels), etc. The breakfast was excellent and Janice took pains to ensure that her guests had all they wanted. Janice kindly kept our suitcases for one day whilst we were in Doubtful Sound. In addition to the above, the view is great. We would recommend her B&B without hesitation.
