Stayed at the Mercury a couple of weeks ago. My room was clean and tidy with lovely clean linen and plenty of towels and toiletries. It was quiet and warm, so I had a great nights sleep. Really convenient for the motorway. Breakfast was quick and really tasty. They have a bar that you can use in the evenings and the locals are all really friendly. All the staff were courteous and nothing was too much trouble. It was good value for the money. I will return again when in the area.

Ok in all fairness the bedding n linen where spotless n clean
they also do a great cooked ter order breakfast, HOWEVER that is where it ends as bein good!!
We stayed there in March, an it was very tired an dirty in places it should never be...the response from the owners was that it was ---tired lookin they admit that---- so why when almost 9 mnths later we stayed there AGAIN it was in the very same? infact WORSE than ever state...Our 2nd bookin I will admit was an error on my behalf....an by the time I had realised was too late ter pull out...BUT benefit of the doubt we thought it may well have been spruced up a bit...WORD'S DO FAIL ME...not often a problem with me I may add....I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE EVER...after readin SOME other reviews on this place I fail ter see that they are GENUINE !!...seriously, its short of DISGUSTING !!!....the room my daughter had was WAY far worse than ours.... photo's ter show.....if anyone wishes , she will oblige, ,,,,why did we not complain???...what's the use when they use the excuse's....."Yes its a little tired" "but its clean"
IT SHOULDNT BE TIRED....when its bein sold ter the public...AND TIRED isn't DIRTY, FILTHY DIRTY IN PLACES, ......, That is NOT acceptable, they prodly show the RED ROSE AWARD on the front door....this was given in 2001 / 3 I belive.....?????......has no one inspected it in the past 10yrs???....On our departure we noticed a ---FOR SALE SIGN --- out front.....personally speakin unless yer have a demolition ball an plan ter use it.....DONT BOTHER, the staff n owners are polite n helpful....ni issues there....but please read all the NEGATIVE REPORTS on this place....which from my opinion are , spot on......

The Mercury does not charge much and delivers far less! The Mercury is to the Premier
Lodge as the Greasy Spoon Cafe is to Cafe Rouge. When I was there most of the clients arrived in vans.

If you want a night in a stained, cold, noisy sixties box (with ensuite) choose The Mercury. That may be unfair because after complaining I was given a "refurbished room" which had the merit of a functioning radiator. The were still stains, and I enjoyed the banter from the tradesmen in the next room, I could have joined in but didn't.

Breakfast for £5 was reasonable value, not much more than a cup of coffee elsewhere, but there was only instant coffee or luke warm tea on offer. However, watching myself eat on CCTV was unexpected - a measure perhaps of how the management truly view their clients?

The Mercury is located very close to the motorway which means in theory you could leave quickly (after a night there you will want to) but bizarrely reception isn't open until 9am. Get your VAT receipt when you check in.

Some reviewers say the staff are friendly, none were discourteous to me - expect for giving me a pit of a room in the first place - but reading management responses to adverse comments here I can't see that it goes to the top.

Quite how this hotel got a Trip Advisor commendation is a mystery to me!

Room Tip: The "back block" has the refurbished rooms. But the best advice is to choose a room in ano...

Stayed just the one night, mid-week. Great for motorway access. The room was clean and fresh although in need of a little T.L.C., the bathroom did need modernising but again spotlessly clean, comfy bed, lovely and quiet we both slept well
