“Interesting Evening”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

Haven’t been to the Fountain for a couple of years but visited last night with family and really enjoyed ourselves. The wait for food was quite lengthy (over an hour) but worth it and extremely good value when it arrived (Tuesday early bird menu) and to be fair the place was packed to the rafters. Very challenging to cope with as the same day in the previous week only 3 tables turned up. I found it very impressive that they fed everyone without running out of food! The hosts were very welcoming and charming to customers, I was surprised to read some not very good comments, we found them full of character and a refreshing change to some ‘bland’ operations. Thanks for a lovely evening!

This hostelry is quite close to home, so ideal if you don't want to cook some nights.
Excellent value if you're eating early but very good value anyhow.
At a time when restaurants are getting too clever and, it has to be said, failing to deliver in many areas, it is reassuring that The Fountain keeps it relatively simple and yet impress in remarkable style.
Their burgers are good , their fish and steaks just excellent....and the beers good.

Me and my partner went here to eat, the food was very good and the service was also good and prompt, one little moan my partner ordered morrocan lamb but was served minted lamb, an error by the manager as he failed to change the menu that day.

It’s a long time since we were at The Fountain and having seen the local adverts we decided to give it a go for an evening meal. The inside may have been given a lick of paint but the table and chairs are still the same. We ordered two steak pies, what a disappointment. The meat in the pie was dry and gravy out of a “bottle”, the peas were half cooked and the chips had been cooked yesterday and reheated. It is going to be a long time before we go back again.

We popped in for a drink this week. Pleased to see that the facade of the building has been given a lick of paint, and some v nice hanging flower baskets. We were given a v warm and friendly welcome by the barmaid and landlord. The landlord chatted away to us, and was a v genuine and nice person. He seemed the type of person who wouldn't suffer fools gladly, and I have no issue with that. I really like this pub, and we will keep returning until we have a poor experience.

Had my 40th birthday party here. The party itself was good, but that's because I organised it myself, and got in outside caterers.

However, the landlord of The Fountain is a law unto himself and cannot be trusted.

I was told that there would be no room hire charge, as "you're bringing custom to an otherwise empty room". The bill told a very different story, and I later found that I had indeed been charged £100.

We stayed overnight, and to be honest, the rooms are perfectly okay. But the service at breakfast was astoundingly bad. On walking into the dining room, we were greeted with silence, and simply told "sit there", by David, the Landlord. However, we had been seated away from our friends, so we took the initiative and moved ourselves to a free table near them. So we were then ignored, and didn't have our order taken for some 20 minutes until we asked for food!

His manner and attitude are simply dreadful, and totally mismatched to the position he holds.
Once he was out of the way, his staff implied to me that he was like this pretty much all the time, and that he was deeply unpleasant to work for as well.

Apart from a quick drink there, we definitely won't be using The Fountain for a function again while he is managing the place. And this is such a shame, as its a nice venue, and in a nice location.

My advice would be for the landlord to consider a change of career, or personality.

Having done a lovely long walk in the area ending at the Resevoir, my friend and I decided to try the Fountain for the early bird menu, £7.45 for 2 courses. We were not disappointed the food was fresh and home cooked. The chilli nacho starter was lovely and the steak pie with homemade chips tasty full of meat with a light short rust pastry and just the right size (not too large, so one could eat 2 courses). No complaints although I think I'd ask for some gravy to go with it next time, but that's personal choice. The pub has a nice country pub atmosphere and was clean and smelt nice, even though the decor was a bit dated. The staff were friendly and helpful. I'd definately visit again, as the early bird is great value for the quality of food you get & it's in a good location for walking. Apparently on a Monday they even do a £1.99 menu, which sounds amazing.
