You can understand why there was a revolution after seeing these palaces but the architecture, fountains, and take time to explore the expansive grounds...the many additional fountains and buildings with indeed overwhelm you! Plan to do a lot of walking! And you have to!

Visited here as part of a river tour and had to pay extra for this visit. It was worth it. The fountain switch-on at 11 is great, best viewed from the bottom level. The palace itself is interesting but very similar to Catherine's Palace. We had a limited time to see the fountains dotted about the garden, it is no too big to see most but you might have to get a move on if you want to see them all. Not sure if this Palace is open in the winter but if the fountains are not running it would not have the same wow factor.

I have never seen any garden like this. Every fountain is powered by gravity. Give yourself at least two-to-three hours to explore.

Make sure you see Catherine's fountain in honor of her dog (it even has sound). We also loved the children's trick fountain and the Sun fountain.

We were lucky and had great weather. This is not the norm. Bring an umbrella because if you have to buy one there it will cost you $40.00 USD. Ouch.

We had a private guide which made all the difference.

from ploshchad vosstaniya metro station we took the red line metro and got down at the 4th station baltiskya... crossed over to the baltisky rail station... the suburban train counter was very easy to find... bought obratno... return tickets to Novyj Peterhof for just 72 rubles... went to the platform and got on the train waiting...our options were trains to Oranienbaum 1 (Russian: Ораниенбаум 1), Kalische (Russian: Калище), Lebyazhye (Russian: Лебяжье) or straight to Novyj Peterhof (Russian: Новый Петергоф). ... we had already printed out the schedule of these trains from www.tutu.ru site and so were able to get down at Novyj Peterhof... after a comfortable, picturesque journey of 45 minutes... after getting through the electronic turnstile at the station, we boarded a bus with board ‘ФОНТАНЫ’ which means ‘fountains’...Numbers are 350, 351, 352, 356. Fifth stop was ours – Peterhof Parks. we reached there before 9, had the whole gardens to ourselves, wandered through the upper gardens... unfortunately that day they allowed only groups to enter the palace... so we bought tickets for the lower gardens alone and enjoyed the 165 odd fountains... by 11, huge crowds ahd come in the hydrofoils and we watched the ceremonial start of the samson fountains... after a whole day at the park, went back the same way... it was great to do this on our own... the hydrofoil costs 1000rubles one way and they start from petersburg at 9am onward... you lose precious time

our only grouch in the park was they have only portatoilets... which stank to high heavens
