“Just fabulous!”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

Faultless, friendly service, great locally sourced food, rooms clean and unobtrusively serviced twice daily. Picked up early from airport, welcomed with genuine enthusiasm by all staff, nothing was too much trouble!

A 3 hour flight from Brisbane to Luganville, a scenic 30min boat trip across turquoise waters and then you’re being warmly greeted with a refreshing mocktail by the friendly staff of Ratua.
This private island caters to only 30 or so guests and has the most amazing Indonesian villas. Our small group of one couple and 2 singles stayed in ‘Porcelain’ villa – we thoroughly enjoyed having Fish Village to ourselves. Comprising of 5 villas with its own over-the-water private bar and entertaining area, this would be heaven for a group, small or large.
We visited during August - a great time of year to avoid the heat and humidity and … no mosquitos!
My favourite activity was swimming horses across the bay – what a delight! The horses were very well behaved, all you have to do is hang on!
Snorkelling in front of the Yacht Club was excellent, loads of clown fish, feather stars, an octopus and cuttlefish as well as stunning red fan coral were seen on our first day. We brought our own underwater flashlights and went for a night snorkel – just under the jetty there was a beautiful lion fish, a multitude of crabs and other marine life.
A fun trip to the nearby Blue hole comprised of a boat ride to Malo Island and then paddling canoes through a scenic estuary. Bring your camera, towel and reef walkers or shoes. If you love being in the water, a thermal rashie is a great idea for all the Blue Holes in Vanuatu during “winter”.
The mountain bikes were an excellent way of exploring the island on your own time. We climbed a few of the larger trees and found hermit crabs up there! The fun buggy (golf cart) ride is a less strenuous way of seeing the island, with an informative commentary in either French or English.
The day spa over the reef is exquisite to look at, let alone enjoy the decadence that it offers.
The food was delicious. In particular, the BBQ’d lobster and the fresh scrambled eggs :-)
Manager Bong could not have been more attentive in ensuring his guests enjoyed the most wonderful stay possible.
“Happy Happy Long Life” performed by the string band and staff for Mum’s birthday will be remembered forever!
Thank you all for a terrific holiday on your gorgeous island!

Room Tip: Fish Village is perfect for a group, small or large and also only a short walk from the "hub&qu...

We came across to Ratua only for lunch. We were able to arrange a special boat pick up from Luganville and the staff treated us to a delightful beachfront lunch. Despite us only coming for lunch we were offered use of paddle boards, snorkelling gear etc. We weren't rushed at all and had the discretion of when we were taken back. After a lovely lunch and snorkelling we were dropped back at our resort (on another island) having had a delighful day.

We love island holidays, after spending my husbands 60th in the Cook Islands we decided a 60th holiday venue for me would be ideal if it were a shorter flight as we were traveling with a party of 8 plus an infant. The choice was made to choose Vanuatu and none other than Ratua Private Island. The choice was based on the great advice from a company called Travel Online in Springwood QLD who took care of the entire package from flights to insurance to accommodation to transfers to meal packages- excellent and stress free way to deal with arrangements. The celebrations on a beautiful idyllic island took place and we were amazed at the traditional rustic bungalows many with private beachfronts which were privately located along the waters edge. We occupied 4 bungalows in West Village which was ideal for us and every one was different and very spacious with views to die for. It was a short walk to where the action took place and the main area at the yacht club where meals were served was quite protected from wind and we found ourselves sitting on the waters edge at lunch time to a BBQ feast. I would recommend taking a meal package as the food was fabulous and plentiful and excellent quality. The master Chef Evanne was brilliant and catered for peoples needs above and beyond what could ever be expected, my birthday dinner was amazing- grilled lobster fresh from the sea! The staff were lovely and so polite, its a slow pace there and no sense of rush exists which adds to the entire experience of waiting for those magnificent sunsets over the sea with cocktail in hand every evening! The GM and his wife are hands on GMs and their presence was to ensure your holiday was going perfectly and if anything was not then they fixed it- thank you Bong and Eileen for your input to what was a brilliant holiday. Must do is to swim with the horses, simply wonderful and very affordable, 20 horses on a ranch on the island and Johnny the horse handler was just terrific. Apart from swimming with the horses you can also ride around the island on horse back. Another must do is visit the Sunny Spa and probably my recommendation would be do it more than once. Sunny Spa is simply amazing a view made in heaven with gorgeous girls Mirasol and Patricia to pamper you. Tuesday nights the traditional dancers come and dance in the sea on the beautiful beach in front of the yacht club, a glowing fire on the beach adds to the atmosphere, just lovely. Saturday nights you are entertained by the staff and a traditional string band- great atmosphere eating on the beach with feet firmly planted in the sand with a buffet of island delicacies. I think the best thing we experienced was no crowds- only 13 bungalows in total so very relaxing and no bustle with the real sense of being on a private island. Snorkelling at your front door, fish were plentiful and colourful and the water was beautiful shades of blue and aqua. I could have not spent my 60th in a better place, it was simply perfect thanks to the staff and management of Ratua Private Island located in Vanuatu.

We went to Ratua for our honeymoon for 7 nights and it was the most amazing experience! We loved it. Such a beautiful part of the world. The staff were amazing, the food fantastic, the location wonderful. It is the perfect place to get away. We had a lot of fun and went on a few day trips with some of the other guests to see the nearby blue holes, champagne beach and a school. It was great! Loved dancing on Island Night, loved trying Kava on the Kava Tasting night and also loved the water dance! Such a great holiday. Amazing!!!

Room Tip: We had buffalo and it was great! Apparently Polynesian is amazing.

This place is paradise! From the minute we arrived at about 9pm after a wild 40 minute speed boat ride from Santo, we felt relaxed and in holiday mode. The guys know the waterways so well so as we sped off into the darkness I felt I was in safe hands. Could be unsettling though for some but fore warned is fore armed.
We were welcomed by tribal drums, a mocktail and Bong, the Islands Manager. As the island is powered by generators, lighting is dim but this adds to the rustic charm and reminds you that you are on an ECO island. Bong led us down a vegetation lined, dimly lit, but easily navigatable pathway to our fabulous 100 yr old Javanese Hut.
Comprising 2 large huts, joined by a protected walkway, one was the bathroom and the other the large main room with king size bed, large writing desk and sitting area, and outside patio leading down to our own beach. Wow!!! Very very impressive. Couldnt wait to see it all in the light of day and I wasn't disappointed.
White sand, blue clear sea, coral reef filled with nemo and friends, no need for shoes, totally casual yet classy. Food was excellent - the soup especially tatsy - and met some great people around the beach fire at night.
Swam with the horses, explored the island, visited the blue hole and the Ratua Foundation school on Molo - a must. Swam, snorkled, read, relaxed and laughed a lot. A fantastic week away from traffic jams.
Thank you Bong, Aiyleen, Kava Claude and all the wonderful friendly staff for a truly magical and memorable experience.

Anne

Room Tip: Cobra was excellent. Close to the main area, very private - as are all the huts. Ideal for couples...
