“SUBLIME!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2011

We're so over staying in big, international chain resorts...was really hoping Barrier Beach House would be a great place to unwind and retreat. Our expectations were exceeded in every way. We stayed 10 nights - the longest we have stayed in one place in a very long time. Could easily have stayed for the rest of our lives. Believe us we did ask!

It was so refreshing to be so warmly and genuinely welcomed. The setting is so beautiful - from the native tree to the air filled with bird song, and ohh.my lord..the stunning white sandy beach and tropical turquoise sea. The best beach we have swum in...safe, warm, private and inviting and only a few steps from our fare. And we can lay claim to having sampled some of the world's best spots - including Rio de Janerio, the Bahamas, Greek Islands, Fiji Islands etc.

Barrier Beach House is a wonderful blend of upmarket elegance, beautiful design and "homeliness" - just like having our own architecturally designed beach house with perks.

We had some really memorable nights with Shendall and Shane, and fellow guests. They always went the extra mile especially on my birthday - making me so happy:)

The fare was divine - and believe me, we are not always easy to please! It was private, spacious and beautifully designed. Loved being able to leave the louvers open and gaze at the sea night and day, day and night.

Lights out at 10pm along the whole beach was cool - no wild partying and excessive noise like other resorts we have stayed at.

The food was fantastic. Shane cooks a mean barbecue and Shendall served amazing dishes. Together they cooked the best eye fillet we have ever enjoyed. We even had a guest chef come in and prepare freshly caught Mahi Mahi - the most beautiful dish you can imagine and great fun had by all,

The local staff were wonderful, friendly, professional, discreet and helpful in every way. A big thanks to Bill and Madeline for being so fabulous.

Guess we have to stop now or it you'll think we have shares in the place. We only wish we did. We'll definitely be back and have recommended Barrier Beach House to close friends.

A top place to stay for those wanting to chillax. Can't wait to go back. Thanks again for an extraordinarily, sublime stay.

Selfishly hope it doesn't get too popular or we won't be able to get a reservation! Shhhhhhh:)

Room Tip: Any fare here will be great!

Stayed 5 nights and could have stayed many more. One of the best beach retreats you could hope for. The position is just gorgeous. A few steps from one of the 3 bures/fares and you are in the blue blue water. Some magnificent ancient trees grace the beach, providing shade, sculptural views of the water. Lots of birds are around the property in the canopy and there are the hermit crabs to amuse on the beach.
The accommodation is of a good standard as you might expect from an Australian run property with a good bar fridge at reasonable prices for a remote location like Espiritu, a good shower, tea making facilities and plenty of room, not as you spend much time in the room! Fares 1 and 2 are best for drifting off to sleep to the sound of the lapping wavelettes. All 3 fares are just a few steps from the inviting water.
Shen and Shane the hosts will look after your needs from renting a car, to trips on the water in the Beach House boat or trips to float down an inland river. A simple breakfast is part of the deal, lunch snacks are available and a set dinner is available for a reasonable price. For a variation try the resaurant next door that does lunch and dinner.
Espiritu is lush, laid back and far from the maddening crowd. It still retains the true Island feel where you can do nothing or push the boundaries diving or taking an adventure tour.
We will be back.

The Barrier Beach House is an excellent place for a laid-back holiday. The location is picture perfect, right on a narrow strip of white sand looking out through low hanging trees to a mostly calm, aquamarine blue sea. It is just gorgeous, one of the nicest locations we saw in Vanuatu. The accommodation is up market, newly renovated, spacious and very comfortable. We spent four nights here and wished it was longer. Your hosts, Shane and Shendel, look after you very well, nothing seems to be to much trouble. They can arrange local tours and activities, of which there seems to be plenty. And to top it off, next door, 20 yards along the sand, is one of the best restaurants in Santo. If you wished, you could probably spend your entire stay at the accommodation, where you can swim, snorkel and generally laze about. We hired the little bus Shane and Shendel keep there (very reasonable price, basic but it goes OK) and explored Santo, down to the main town (Luganville, 15 mins south) and north up to Champagne beach. We had a great time and can't wait to come back.

I was travelling with my mother and we were celebrating my graduation from university. We had a fabulous experience from the word go when we were picked up from the airport personally by one of the managers.

We thought we had arrived in paradise. The accommodation is 3 fares - and they are right on the beach but our hosts had thoughtfully provided buckets of water so you can wash your feet before you go inside and avoid getting sand in your room. The view from the room of the water, beach and overhanging trees is amazing! You can lie in bed and take it all in. The rooms are cleaned daily and the bathroom was very spacious. The aaccommodation arrangements are flexible and we were able to opt for 2 king size singles in our room.

The rooms are screened but you may find the occassional insect or gecko in your room - something we found all over Vanuatu and I don't think can be avoided in that type of climate.

Our hosts Shane and Shendel made us feel really welcome. They are really amenable and fun, and had some great recommendations for things to do. Nothing was too much trouble for them! They are very friendly but are also respectful of your space.

It's a B&B and breakfast is simple but really nice and served on the verandah overlooking the superb view. Shane and Shendel also serve lunch and dinner if you would like it. The price is very reasonable and the quality was some of the best we had on the island. It was our preferred place to eat.

We can't wait to come back again and we will be bringing our friends and family next time.

Room Tip: They are all great!

Barrier Beach House was great. The room was very well appointed and you could see and hear the ocean at all times. Shane and Shendel were really nice and gracious hosts. We rented their car one day to explore a blue hole and champagne beach. They even packed a small ice chest with beers for us. And made sure we had stubbies (coozies) for our beers while we sat on the chaise lounge chairs. This was a great place to stay.

We booked for 4 nights but decided to stop for one more day because everything was perfect. Good location, good accomodation (clean, wide). The staff was very friendly, helpful and nice. You can snorkel, kayaking, make a trip with their tender, cycling and, above all, relax on the beach. Good price too!

So this is the first review I have ever taken the time to complete, which say's a lot as I have been travelling around the world for over 12 years.

The accommodation is amazing, and has all the necessary amenities that couples require, from queen and king beds, hot showers, safe, etc. The place is located on the beach, literally a few steps from the water. The place is sheltered from the weather, so you can sleep at night, you just need to get used to sound of the sea, which is not difficult at all, and rather tranquil. Other than the sound of the sea, there are no other sounds at all, so if you want peace and quiet, Barrier Beach House is the place to be.

We were lucky enough to be the very first guests, and whilst the owners Shane and Shan were still fixing up some the 1 percenters to make the place 10/10, I would rate the place 9.5/10.

Not only are the rooms amazing and the location, both Shane and Shan are very gracious hosts and will cater for all your needs. You also have the choice of staying in for dinner with the owners and other guests if you do not want to venture out too far. Whilst Barrier Beach house is not a restaurant, the meals are home cooked recipes and tasty. Shan's chicken dish must be had, and she also cooks a very good eye fillet.

Also if you like to snorkel, you can snorkel right off the beach in turquoise warm waters, and see an abundance of various corals and tropical fish. We were lucky enough to spot a couple of lion fish leisurely drifting about. The snorkels and fins are provided for. You can also kayak and hire a dingy to go across to the next island, which is about 10-15 min away. You will the entire island to yourself, and have the opportunity to snorkel some more, or simply laze about.

We loved the place and we'll be back!

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms, and all are amazing.
