I suppose if you live nearby you have to visit. Not much there though.

Penshaw monument has long been a view that proves you're back in the NE and a Sunday afternoon walk destination. Once you've negotiated the hill and the cows you're offered some great views out to Durham, Sunderland, and wearside.

Pretty much every local knows that there was a staircase up to the top, and now you can climb it if you book in advance at English heritage. Well worth the fee (unless you're a National Trust member) for an even better view, as long as you don't mind the dark enclosed 76 stone spiral steps.
