Everything in this chateau from the moment you see the top of the towers as you drive into the village captivates and delights every fibre in your body. I have dragged my husband from Neuschwanstein to Versailles, but this little chateau lets you be, live and feel the magic that is lost in the overpopulated tour filled historic ones. What a wonderful gift of the owner Cynthia to open the doors of her home for people to stay and feel truly special for a day or two.
To all travellers yet to come, take a moment to look up and around. Every single statue is different and some often taunt others across the room. There are fascinating stories of its origin and throughout the centuries, so be sure to ask.
The staff are, for lack of a better word "Family" and we look forward to returning to see them all again soon.
We stayed in the Tower Suite, gorgeous!
As we were there for our wedding we were able to see all of the rooms as we hired the entire Chateau for 3 nights. Every room is unique and special.
Our wedding had 84 guests and though the Chateau only housed 32, I wouldn't of had it any other way.
If everyone was able to stay it would have lost it special magic and exclusivity. I hope it always keeps it... and I hope everyone acknowledges the generosity of the owner to accept people into her home.

My wife wanted to get married in a castle and we looked all over the world for something that was fairytale like and I have to say this place exceeded our expectations. We rented the entire property so our wedding party of 28 guests could experience the castle in full for the majority of the week (and the cost was actually better than if we would have had a big wedding at home!). The property is absolutely breath taking and the servce from Cynthia and staff was as good as it gets. Everything was perfect !! I would reccomend this Chateau to anyone. We cannot wait to go back for another visit in the upcoming years. Also, Cynthia is a great wedding planner and will make sure everything is just perfect with no stress and can make anything happen (just make the request)!

A jaw dropper, at the least! The staff was most friendly. We did not meet the owner, but I hope we will when we come back next time. We had dinner in the library on our second night, which was like a fairy tale outing. My wife, as well as our traveling couples' wife thought they died and went to heaven. And for Southern baptists, that's pretty good! It's pricy, but well worth the expense if you are looking to do it in grand style!

The staff was friendly and helpful. Don't miss the opportunity to visit and experience this fairy tail chateau and experience the warm welcome of the friendly staff.

Just completed a 3 night stay here and I must say it was excellent. Arrived Sunday Sunday night after driving down from Paris and Fabian met us outside. Since it was mother's day and this trip was a gift to my mother for her 70th birthday we had arranged for flowers to be in her room and to have dinner cooked for us. The rooms are absolutely lovely, my mom had the Empress suite and we had the tower suite. Both rooms were very clean and the entire property is well maintained. If you are looking for a stay in a fairy tale castle in the French countryside this is the place for you.

A couple of things for travelers to be aware of: (1) if you are in any way mobility restricted and cannot climb stairs this is not the property for you. There is no elevator in this chateau (they didnt exist when it was built) so you must walk up the stairs to the rooms and also down 2 flights of stairs to the breakfast room; (2) The rooms are typically cleaned every other day, not a negative just something to be aware of

All in all I cannot be more enthusiastic about reccomending this property to others.

Room Tip: All of the suites are great rooms.

Last week, to celebrate our birthday, my wife & I spent two days at Chateau de Challain.

To be clear, it was the GREATEST week-end I've ever spent in France (I'm french and travelled a lot in diverse places in France & abroad)!!!!!

After booking, I wrote to the owner who is very responsive and helpful. She informed her staff about the scenario - surprise for my wife - which was exactly executed when we arrived :)...

We arrived on Saturday for lunch, to our surprise, we were the only ones in this gigantic place!

Rachelle, the housekeeper, welcome us with a delicious salmon with pasta & some wine. Excellent start.

Then, we visited the whole place, rooms, library, bedrooms, garden, ... decorated with a lot of taste and most of all, respecting the soul of this place. We're used to visit Public Castle, this is one is at least, as well decorated & interesting to visit than most of castle we've seen before.

The decor is gothic/english inspired, with a lot of wooden walls, doors, tapestry, HUUUUUGE beds!!!!!

After lunch, we drove by the villages around, bought some wine, not much to see but you can go to Angers or Porquerolles by the sea if you have more time to spent.

For dinner, we were also served by Rachelle... lunch was great... Dinner was even better: scallops & bay prawns, duck with vegetables, chocolate fondant, cheese, wine, ...

In addition, the place is NEAT, i've never seen a place so clean despite the size of the rooms.

After a long night of sleep, we were welcome for breakfast by brigitte who took us to the "basement". Incredible underground kitchen, with a fireplace, authentic decoration, great.

To sum up:
- Extremely friendly & professional Staff
- Incredible place to visit
- Absolutely marvelous place to stay
- Beautiful gardens
- Reasonable prices for the quality of services provided

We will definitely go back there and i recommend you should go :)

Note:
- Rent a car as the place is quite isolated from big cities
- Don't forget to write to the owner before your arrival so she communicates to her staff

We spent 3 fantastic nights here in the romantic Tower Room between Christmas and New year 2012.

I am incredibly slow in posting this review, but that is not an indication of our experience as we absolutely loved it here!

The Tower room itself was not just one room, but three rooms! A bathroom, sitting area and the main round bedroom itself. The décor was gorgeous and in keeping with the era, the bed was beautifully comfortable and the windows had views over the back garden and lake in the chateau grounds. Breakfast each morning was around the kitchen table before the crackling fire in the basement kitchen and consisted of fresh croissants, bread, jams, boiled eggs, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, juice, tea & coffee. This is usually available from around 9 am but arrangements can be made if you need an early start. C’est parfait!

The first night there was one other couple also staying at the chateau and after that we had the whole place to ourselves. We had a great time exploring all the rooms of the chateau and it’s fantastic that Cynthia the owner encourages you to do this and make yourself at home. Basically no-where is off limits so long as it doesn’t have a no-entry or private sign on the door. Everywhere in the chateau was very interesting to wander around though my husband especially liked exploring the higher up un-renovated levels. He was just like a little kid going exploring! Speaking with Cynthia about the castles’ history and seeing the state of the un-renovated floors, it’s quite amazing what she has accomplished in the lower 3 levels. When she & her husband took ownership 11 years ago there was only one bathroom in the entire building! Now there are several beautiful guest rooms all with private bath plus many dining, living and day rooms. Most of the walls in the ground and first levels have been covered with fabric panels of silk brocade, finished with a cornice of silk tassels. Candelabras adorn every ceiling, stylised candle wall lights, gilded mirrors, old oil paintings, dark antique furniture with plush cushions, vases of flowers, portraits and cabinets bursting with silverware and crystal stemware fill every room.

Hospitality – Cynthia and her staff (in particular Fabienne) go out of their way to make you feel welcome. On our initial arrival we were greeted by Fabienne and taken down to the kitchen for a warming cuppa and a friendly hello before being taken to our room and shown around. Another time we wandered down to the kitchen to see if there were any croissants left over from breakfast and found Cynthia who then proceeded to whip us up a snack of pan warmed ham & cheese croissants which we enjoyed while chatting to her about the history of the chateau. We also had dinner at the chateau our first night – a magnificent 4 course feast with wine, served to us on gold plates by head chef extraordinaire Fabienne.

If needing to get away by a specific time on the day you leave I recommend settling your bill the night before. At the time of our stay payment could only be made via cash or PayPal which we didn’t realise. Unfortunately Cynthia had gone out on business and the staff left in the chateau were not so familiar with computers or PaypPal. My husband ended up getting his laptop out and making payment that way but this all took about 30 minutes. Normally not an issue but it cut into our travel time back to Angers and we only just made it to our train a few minutes before departure. Nothing against the chateau here, it’s just useful to know what the payment methods are. We would have settled our bill the day before had we realised.

Would definitely stay here again if visiting the countryside and have told many friends about this wonderful place.

Room Tip: All of the rooms with private bath are beautiful. You can't go wrong!
