“Unfriendly and unwelcoming”
Reviewed 23 August 2011

I am writing this review with mixed feelings. The room we stayed in was exactly as it looked in the picture on the website. It was a large room which had real character with exposed beams, there was a nice bathroom including a jacuzzi style bath and a separate toilet. However as it was in the loft, and there was no air conditioning, it was uncomfortably hot during the night.

The hotel is located at a busy junction in the village and there were frequent large noisy lorries passing right next to the hotel and the tables and chairs outside - which were fastened to the ground by steel cables!

The restaurant food was also excellent quality but breakfast was poor for a hotel charging these prices and we noticed that the preserves were left out all day with no lids! The main problem was the unfriendly attitude of the owners. We have been travelling in France for over 20 years and this is the first time we have encountered language difficulties where the people we were speaking to seemed determined to be as unhelpful as they possibly could and determined not to meet us half way and help us to understand what they were trying to say by either slowing down or saying things in a different way. We do have some understanding of French and did not experience this attitude anywhere else. At dinner we felt most uncomfortable and were surprised to hear that English was spoken to a table of American guests who were also offered an English menu. Even when checking out there was no ‘Bon Voyage’ or any friendly comment from the owner.

This was our first night stop-off driving down to the south, and it was ideal. There was a warm welcome, a large comfortable room, with large comfortable bed, and a spacious well appointed ensuite bathroom. The restaurant, in the former wine-cellar, was excellent, the food being imaginative and plentiful. Highly recommended.

Les Riceys is a quiet unspoilt collection of small villages just south of Troyes. Le Marius is actually in Ricey Bas, just north of the main village.

The rooms are comfortable, but what makes it really special is the food. We had the Menu Tradition, 4 course for less than 30 euros, which also included a wonderful, mouthwatering appetiser. For this price the food was truly exceptional. We had a memorable stay and when we next head across France we'll make a detour to stay again at Le Marius.

Really well appointed hotel with exceptional quality rooms, and a beautiful location.

Room Tip: 'Champagne' room (1) was very nice.

Les Riceys is a very special village although the rosé wine is not to everyone's taste, being almost like a red wine in colour. Very distinctive.
Located in the heart of this wine growing village, Le Marius represents incredible value for money. For 4 people, with two demi- pichés (1 litre) of wine, water and coffee, together with a simple four course meal – 56 Euros. If only one could eat so well for such little money in the UK.
The restaurant is located in the original wine cellars of what is now the hotel and has been sympathetically styled. Fare is basic but good with all covers being fully occupied and this on a Tuesday. Service can vary but is rapid, given that they are serving predominantly French business men and workers.
Thoroughly recommended.

First of all, the excellent website, with photos showing different aspects of each & every room, made choosing this hotel more of a hit and less of a miss affair. Finding it in (lower) Les Richeys was easy as an exterior shot of the hotel had primed us.
Madame Josselin was very welcoming & the friendliness was continued with a champagne tasting in the atmospheric bar (we had booked the 2-night "Avis aux amateurs de champagne" formule).
Dinner (in the beautifully restored cellars) on both nights was excellent; the maitre d' provided extremely good, friendly service. Breakfast, served upstairs in another lovely room, was accompanied by more pleasant service.
Our room, no. 5, was charming and exceptionally clean, as was all the hotel. My only gripe would be that the mattress was a little hard for me (being a light-weight!). On the final morning I was given a quick tour of some of the other bedrooms and thought they all seemed pretty good - if you have more to spend then the large one in the roof looked fabulous. Evidently, the hotel has been open 4 years, after 3 years' of renovation. It still looks pristine.

We were travelling back from Switzerland through France to Calais. We had previously booked a hotel near Dijon for an overnight stay. Unfortunately that hotel proved entirely unsuitable and we decided to continue our journey and to book an alternative hotel. We found Le Marius Hotel completely by accident but what a find. We arrived early evening in a thunderstorm and were immediately welcomed into the hotel. We were fortunate in being able to book the last 2 remaining very spacious and comfortable rooms, 1 family and 1 double. Although it was 9.30pm and the chefs in the restaurant should have left they stayed on so that we were able to be offered the full choice from the menu. Special mention should be made of the head waiter/somelier (William). His service, advice and sense of humour was superb. Les Ricey is a very pretty town on the Champagne Trail and we hope one day to return to this hotel to enjoy the champagne tour which the hotel is able to organise.
