“Good Food, Great Service. Fantastic Log Burner”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

Stayed two nights and after walking all day in the cold, you need two things ....
1/ Good Food
2/ Warm, welcoming atmosphere.

This place gave us both and we will certainly be going back

“The only good thing is the view”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

Called with friends, for a drink and something to eat ,we had fish and chips ,and they were rubbish oven chips and utterly tasteless fish ,I would call for a drink but never eat there again.

“Perfect location, good food and good service.”
Reviewed 8 October 2013 via mobile

Having been a customer of this pub for the last 20 years I am better equipped than most to offer an unbiased review. The location is just idylic, offering stunning views over Runswick Bay towards Kettleness. The pub itself is small with a main area overlooking the bay and a snug out the back but the toilets are outside! Food can be served in both the snug and main room plus a room upstairs. The menu is very limited these days only offering a fraction of the choice of a couple of years ago, however the food is pretty good, albeit a little pricey but the portions are generous and home cooked. If you want a nice meal in a pub with friendly staff and simply the best location then look no further. Don't expect to be spoilt for choice though.

“Great little pub!”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

Visited many times over the summer, for both food and drinks. Always felt welcomed by friendly, chatty bar staff. The food was excellent, especially the fish and chips! Will definitely be visiting again, and have recommended it to my friends

“Unique and discreet”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

This pub does not shout its presence among st the quiet romantic setting of this hideaway village.
Approaching from the top of the bank there is no indication, and those who venture down into the bay will not be distracted by the small sign that directs you to the hotel.
Even when you walk the short distance through the cottages you could easily miss the discreet frontage.
Only in fine weather, when the small courtyard at the front is peopled with those holding pints of beer or glasses of wine, does it give itself away.
In side it is pared back, bare scrubbed wooden floors and a roaring log fire on cold days- as warm as the welcome we received from the fresh faced bar staff.
The views over the sea from the long windows and doors at the front are stunning and uninterrupted. There is also a back room (again, not announced) well worth checking out for a quieter meal on a busy day.
I was pleasantly surprised by the accessibility of the menu- basic bar food at reasonable prices.
On the first night of the holiday we tried the fish and chips and the scampi- both of which were considered excellent. Service was friendly and efficient and we looked forward to a return with friends later in the week.
The one drawback to this was that the food served mid-week was just not as good (apart from the crab which a friend enjoyed) as the food served on a Saturday. Two of my friends had the fish and chips, which we had raved about- but the fish was dry and although the scampi was still good, the chips were hard and strangely bubbly! Very disappointing indeed. I hope that this was not typical, that the good food is served at week-ends when the regulars are there, with the poor quality food served in the week. That would be a great shame and spoil the experience of eating and drinking in this unique and lovely place.
