“Here history is present in a very impressive way”

If you are in Johannesburg, you really must go and see Nelson Mandela's House in Soweto. He used to live there until he was sent to prison and from that momen this wive lived there for a long time. They show you the small Soweto house with the typical 4 rooms. Lots of texts from Nelson are there, that give a good impresiion of Nelson and the brave way he resisted apartheid. Not far from huis house you will also see Tutu's house and the monument for those kids that died 1976 as the police shot a lot of young students because they refused to use the Afrikaans. This place is also a must go.

“Don't miss this”

This is so well done as a museum and you feel that you are in the presence of the man himself. Doesn't take long to look round it but still worth making the trip there.

“Good tour”

Very nice to be able to walk into Mandela's House. The place is really a piece of history. We were given an informative summary of Mandela by a young female college student.

“Great to be there”

Excellent to look around and see exactly where Nelson Mandela lived and a short walk to where Desmond Tutu also resides when in Soweto.

“Part of History”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

I can't imagine coming to Johannesburg and not visiting Mandela's house, though it does only take 10 or 20 minutes to see it. A block away in the direction of Bishop Tutu's house you'll find lots of restaurants - our guide took us to Sakhumzi which offered a buffet of African favorites that we enjoyed. What was most interesting to us about Mandela's house is that our guide (who lives in Soweto) seemed more admiring of Winnie Mandela. In her opinion more credit should be given to Winnie for having kept Nelson from being forgotten over those 27 years.
