“Nice place but make sure you like dogs!”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We attended a wedding at a nearby venue. The B and B was nice but unfortunately I'm not really a dog person and it was clearly a place inhabited by the a beloved dog and other dogs stay here! We stayed in the ground floor room, which did smell strongly of dog when we arrived. This had diminished by the time the floor had been washed. The downstairs room was unfortunately pretty noisy as it was near the dining room. The floors above were really creaky! Didn't get a lie in past 7.45! Beds were comfy, the owners were kind and breakfast was delicious.

We’re glad that this guest mentioned that we thoroughly clean our rooms!

The Old Cider House is an old building and things occasional creak – it’s all part of the atmosphere.

Thanks for the vote about breakfast – we’ll tell the hens.

A warm welcome followed by home cooked dinner, washed down with a delicious beer from the establishment's own micro brewery. Ian and Lynne are attentive hosts and perfect dinner companions, keeping us entertained during the evening with tales about the local area, Coleridge and other locals, and events of note. You have to try the home made house speciality, firmity, with breakfast, guaranteed to set you up for the long day ahead!

Room Tip: The village is as quiet as the grave - all rooms guaranteed to deliver a good night's sleep.

Thank you for these lovely comments.

We usually eat at the same time as our guests – and sometimes with them if invited!

Oh, and the furmity. Remind us the night before – especially in the summer.

My wife and myself were attending a wedding party and needed somewhere local to stay overnight.
We were more than happy with The Old Cider House. Our hosts,Ian and Lynne made us very welcome and our room, facilities etc were comfortable and without fault.Breakfast next morning was great, more than adequate.
We would certainly not hesitate to book again should we need to stay in that part of the world and could confidently recommend The Old Cider House to anyone.

We stayed in the Old Cider House during the Easter holidays. We were made to feel really welcome. We were greeted by a friendly face and a cup of tea upon arrival. Our room was well presented and clean. On our first night, we had dinner in the Old Cider House and we were not disappointed. The food was freshly cooked and we particularly enjoyed the home-made bread. Breakfast was continental or cooked. I would definitely recommend this hotel, we had a really relaxing and enjoyable time. The Old Cider House is a great place to stay to explore Somerset, not far from Cheddar Gorge/national park.

Thanks for mentioning the things to do.

Cheddar Gorge is a favourite, good for wet weather and dog friendly.

Arrived for our 4 night stay to be welcomed by Lynne and shown to our room, situated at the back of the property overlooking the garden. Westies Jasmine and Millie settled in quickly and enjoyed exploring the village of a Nether Stowey.
Dinner on Friday night was a lively affair with great curries cooked by Ian and shared with our hosts and other guests. Delicious!
Breakfast next morning did not disappoint and set us for the day. I had arranged for dinner at The Old Cider House on Saturday evening, joined by my son and his girlfriend' and her mum. What an evening we had! Great food, great wine, great hosts and to my son's delight, beer brewed on the premises by Ian!
The area is great for walking and exploring and relaxing. The Old Cider House is a great base, friendly and welcoming with great food too.
We will return!

Our second stay at The Old Cider House has (if possible) been even more enjoyable than our first.
We came again with our dog Fado, who is barking his agreement with what I am writing next to me right this moment, and we were made very welcome again. Nether Stowey really is a treasure, nestled just on the edge of the Quantocks and a very short drive from the beach, there are lots of sites of interest in the vicinity. This time we went to Cheddar and Cheddar Gorge, did a lovely walk, and went exploring the caves (and we bought quite a bit of chees as well :-) and we spent a day along the many pittoresque sea-side towns (a great day iterinary is provided by Lynne and Ian).

We had dinner on our second night, and again, as before we were very spoiled with the offering. risotto with shrimps, a wonderful steak (cooked to perfection by Ian) on salad, cheeses and a home made walnut ice cream.

One of the other nights we spent at the local pub, who does very nice food as well, and as it was Quiz-Night we participated and obviously, as we are French, failed to win the jackpot!

We really hope that it will not two years until we have the pleasure to visit The Old Cider House again.

Thank you Lynne and Ian for a wonderful stay. Fado misses the dog sausages for breakfast.

We visited the Old Cider House for a special Valentine's Day weekend break to an area we had never visited before. We weren’t disappointed: Lynne and Ian were so welcoming and helpful, the room and food just splendid and walking in the Quantocks was a sheer delight. I would encourage anyone to stay at the Old Cider House and to visit this enchanting corner of England.

We arrived about 6pm on Friday and settled into our room – large but cosy with a very comfortable four-poster bed – and got changed for the evening ahead. I particularly enjoyed the pre-dinner drinks (which included Ian’s tasteful brew) and chance to meet the other guests. As there was only one other couple staying, who knew Lynne and Ian well already, we decided to take our special Valentine’s meal altogether and had a lovely time chatting and eating the wonderful food and wine which Lynne and Ian had prepared for us. Once all was cleared away Ozy, lead us to the Rose and Crown to continue the evening.

We had been concerned about the stories of flooding in the Somerset levels but we need not have been. Whilst people further south were undoubtedly still having real difficulties, our journey and visit were completely unaffected although on the Sunday we saw, with some amazement, the effects of the recent enormous waves on the beach at Kive.

We started Saturday with a brilliant breakfast – the full English was fabulous but the sausage and Ian’s Furmity were standout winners. If Ian’s Furmity is on offer do taste it – it is fantastic. I don’t like porridge and didn’t fancy it but having tasted a little of my husband’s I had a bowl of my own. It’s like warming Christmas pudding in a breakfast bowl – sheer heaven.

This set us up beautifully for a fantastic walk – up to Beacon Post – mostly in beautiful bright sunshine but a sudden short hail storm certainly kept us on our toes! The scenery is magnificent: although the Quantocks are relatively low there are fabulous views from the top and the whole area feels like a different and magical country.

We had paid for a special Valentine’s Day break – with dinner, B & B on the Friday and a reduced rate for B & B on the Sat. It was great value but we would gladly pay the normal rate and return to this beautiful part of the world and the welcome Lynne and Ian offer to all their guests. We plan to return and would encourage anyone who loves food, beer and the countryside to check them out.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great but some of the rooms are dog-friendly if that is something you are looking...
