“Could do with a face lift”
Reviewed 22 May 2009

We stayed here for 8 nights from May 9th to 17th 2009. We thought it would be great from the photos etc on the internet. The rooms are tired and need a good facelift. The whole place didnt have the atmosphere from the resort that we had left in Krabi so it was a bit disappointing. It was on the beach which was a plus but expected a bit more. We paid less at the previous resort and it was immaculate. Would not stay here again, think there are better Resorts around that are cheaper and nicer, even if you have a little walk to the beach.

We visited Phuket for 5 nights and stayed near the Laguna portion for part of the trip and Kata Beach for the remainder. We wanted to stay near Kata Beach since we found ourselves going there a lot and this hotel was the perfect location - literally beach front! We didn't enjoy Patong bc we found it a bit seedy, and Kata was more laid back. The whole town is touristy, but at least it was more mellow.

We rented surfboards from Nautilus Dive & Surf Shop (also located on the beach) to go surfing and when we wanted to relax, we just walked over to the hotel pool for a dip and a nap. As someone else mentioned, you can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach from vendors for $100 Baht/ chair for the entire day.

Right around the hotel, there are places to eat and massage day spas. The tuk-tuk ("taxi") prices are expensive, and they don't seem to allow you to barter too much for a lower price. It was cheaper to walk outside of the hotel and find a tuk-tuk or car for transportation nearby (car to go farther or to the airport) than to arrange it through the hotel. We couldn't seem to find the official metered taxis anywhere. If you are going to a restaurant nearby, the restaurant sometimes provides free transportation - check the tourist brochures and magazine ads for the restaurants or call to see. If you sign up for activities with tour groups, diving, etc., the company will provide transportation.

The hotel charges for wireless internet, but there are small coffee shops and internet cafes near the hotel that are much cheaper. As someone else mentioned, the staff was friendly but not necessarily the most professional. For the most part, things were fine but there are little luxuries that they could provide (like an alarm clock). We ended up asking for wake-up calls and they were all on-time. In the rooms, there is a hair dryer, air conditioning, free toiletries, complimentary bottles of water, instant coffee, cable TV, etc. The rooms aren't super posh, but they were clean and we thought they were fine.

Overall, we had a good time - we were looking for a place to relax and get some sun and surf. The most frustrating part of the trip didn't have to do with the hotel but the transportation situation - the fact that the "taxis" were all over-charging even after bargaining down the prices and there didn't seem to be an alternative mode of transportation unless you were willing to rent a moped or car. We didn't want to rent a vehicle as we're not used to driving on the other side of the road and didn't want to deal with parking and gas. Since transportation was our major headache, staying at this hotel really made things easier as we could walk down the streets and look for restaurants and the beach was right out front. Arranging a car to the airport was around $1000 baht (for two people), and we ended up asking the many tuk-tuk and "taxi" drivers hanging out around outside the hotel the night before we left and found a ride for $800. Arriving at the Phuket airport and getting a ride to wherever you're staying is cheaper than going to the airport - around $450 baht for a car or you can take a bus (depending on where you are staying) or the hotel might provide a free transfer. If you walk outside of the airport terminal, you have a better chance of finding a real metered taxi - the signs that say "metered taxi" (and the guys walking around offering "taxi? taxi?" are often just private cars that have either a set price or you negotiate. The real taxis are hot pink/yellow or some other bright dual colors and actually have meters that you can see.

We booked the hotel through the website hotelopia.com since we've used them in the past and always good experiences. Just don't forget to print out the voucher to give when you check-in and if there is any problem with the booking, call their customer service. We had a problem with a booking in a different city and they immediately were able to call the hotel and fix the problem. We felt the price (less than $100 USD) for the Kata Beach Resort was a good deal for a beach front hotel, though considering how cheap things in Thailand are, it was on the expensive side. Still, it was worth it to us since we just wanted to hang out at the beach and pool and weren't interested in much sight-seeing (we did that earlier), eating or shopping.

We booked on Agoda which has the most competitive rates- we got it for $145 US per night. The hotel has a nice big lobby with an asian theme. The rooms were very clean and spacious and had a nice style. There's no clock in the room though so take an alarm clock with you just incase they forget a wake-up call.

The pool was nice and a good size. The staff was average. We asked them to make us a reservation for a restaurant in Patong and they wanted to charge us for the phone call-I have never heard of that before! The buffet breakfast was very good and had a nice selection. However there are mosquitos everywhere! (Take bug spray with you). The taxi ride from the airport was 45 min and 500 baht. The beach was nice with greener waters, but no comparison to Phi Phi island. It cost 200 Baht for 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella.

The poolside lunch was very good quality. Do NOT go to the sushi place across the street-Mali-the sushi was not fresh at all and we didn't feel well afterwards. There's a 7/11 across the street which was convenient. There are a few shops and restaurants surrounding the hotel but its not happening at all and is mostly quiet.

I debated for a long time whether or not I should stay in Patong and I'm so happy we decided not to. we went there one night (15 min taxi ride) and it's definately busier there but it is FULL of prostitution everywhere and the entire area is filled with strip clubs. I don't know why anyone would stay there unless you want that environment. We went there one night just to see what it was all about and that was PLENTY. There is a restaurant there called Savoey which was really busy and had good food. It was the priciest meal we had in Thailand and the lobster was a little chewy but overall the food and ambience were good.

We booked Kata Beach Resort in January - and between then and our trip, which we've just returned from, I began to wonder if I'd made the right choice given the recent poor reviews of this hotel on this site. I can now say that I was very happy with our choice. The staff were pleasant, the room was clean and the proximity to the beach, shops and restaurants is fantastic. I think it depends on what you use the hotel for. We spent every day on the beach between 10 and 4, then as it clouded over, went back to our room (we had a grand pool access room) for another swim/spa and shower before heading out for drinks and dinner. We never ate at the resort other than the breakfast buffet, which had a good variety. The bed was firm, but we liked that. I had a 2 and a half hour session at the resort spa, which was very relaxing (I highly recommend the coconut cream scrub!). The only downside I could see was all the pool deckchairs are reserved very early as others have mentioned. However we much preferred to spend our days relaxing on the beach under an umbrella - much nicer view, better swimming and less noise, as the pool was overrun everyday with parents and kids.
I definitely recommend Kata Resort for couples planning to spend days on the beach and nights eating out. If you are looking for a hotel where you can get up late, laze by the pool all day and eat at the resort every night, this is probably not right for you.

We have lived in Asia for 20 years and travelled extensively. We made a big mistake staying at this hotel.

Good things:

location

Bad things:

Service was absolutely terrible from start to finish. Two examples. One morning we accidently locked our key in the room. We politely asked one of the maids to let us in. She stared at us, turned around and walked toward our room mumbling nastily. I told her to forget it and asked someone else. On the day we left we asked for a 2 hour late check-out (had been there 8 days and paid a lot of money). When we finally found someone who seemed allowed to make the desision she just said 'NO' and turned away. So much for any Thai hospitality - it does not exist at Kata Beach Resort.

Room and Food. Very ordinary indeed (paid for the pool view). Bathroom a bit like a 1950s Super 6. Roome servic was like a lottery, some days you got amenities, or some amenities, other times nothing. Wait for it, one day we had to call up for toilet paper!

Pool: Enough has been said by others about the norm of 'reserving' lounges - my god. We only used them one day and a Russian lady came up after we'd been there for over an hour and said she'd reserved 4 and wanted them back...

Finally, we went to the hotel because we wanted to use it for our daughter's wedding in August. Needed a decent sized place for 70-80 people. The only good thing about staying at Kata Beach Resort was that it made us look around for a another place for them to stay and for our daughter to be married.

In my opinion the management of the Hotel should be held accountable. I don't know what they are doing wrong. I wrote to them to tell them about my experiences - they didn't even bother to respond. We will never stay there again, or at any other establishments run by the Group.

Yes the hotel's on the beach. Is that it? You have to pay 5 euros if you want 2 filthy broken loungers and stay on the beach granted it's not all prebooked. But while you wait some skanky dogs will entertain you with a fleas show.

Perhaps you may just stay in the ONE pool of the resort that is supposed to accommodate some 200 guests who reserve the loungers and then walk away to breakfast or whatever for 2 hours. Loungers are so close to one another you can feel neighbours breathing on your neck. Again, granted you find a lounger at all.

Hotel leaves a note in your room suggesting to reserve loungers for a maximum time of 1 hour after which someone will take towels and personal belongings away (never seen that occur even after 3 hours) and then they leave another note saying it's complitely forbidden to reserve loungers. Make your mind up!

This place looks terribly cheap and is actually terribly expensive compared to some real luxury resorts (Indigo Pearl for instance). The sea is hollow every 5 minutes there are crazy waves and in the afternoon you can't even approach the water for the stingers.
The beach is quite packed.

The resort looks something between an old retirement home and a kindergarden. Buckets of screaming kids all over the place and definitely too many loud drunk russians.

Rooms: the bathroom is tiny and looks barely 3 stars. The room needs some major cleaning. Floors so dirty I walked barefoot once and my feet were all shades of black. Major leak on the ceiling. Only pros: spacious, nice balcony, good wardrobe space.

Food: lunch at the pool bar was very good and decent price. Dinner at Atrium on the other hand was a nightmare. I ordered a seafood salad and it was so outrageously spicey I couldn't even eat it. They could at least use the spicey symbols on the menu as most quality resorts restaurants do. I swear I had tears running down my eyes from how spicey it was.

After the room, the dinner and the beach experiences I had had enough! Was supposed to stay one week but rushed to reception to say we were checking out the following day. We stayed one more day just to buy some gifts outside the resort and to avoid cancellation charges.
We rushed back to the Indigo Pearl and I at last felt on holiday again.

Bottom line: If you find a deal less than €80 you might as well go, knowing what you will get. I paid twice that for a deluxe room facing pool and it was unacceptable.

I stayed in Kata Bech Resort last November with my girlfried.

We had to pay about 50% (about 400€) in advance in order to make the reservation on the internet. When we did chek out, they charged us the full price. We said we had payed half of it in advance, but they assured us that those 50% would never be charged (as it usually happens in other cases), so we believed and payd the full price. When we got back to Portugal and received the credit card bill, we realized that those 50% had in fact been charged, as well has the full price payed on check out. So we ended up paying 150% of the price of our stay.

Well, my girlfriend sent an e-mail to the hotel and they said they had in fact made a mistake and they would refund those 50%. Nevertheless, they said we had to pay for the transfer expenses (about 5% charge for THEIR mistake).

It only gets worse. Until this day (again, we were there in NOVEMBER) we received nothing. This never happened to us and we surely feel cheated.

The hotel has a great location but is really expensive, so if above all that you end up paying about 50% more it seems a total nightmare. Do not go there, kata beach has several other options.
