You will pay double the amount for far worse rooms in other hotels in Kata.
Being new, this hotel still feels quite fresh. The modern concrete interior will not be to everyone’s taste, but I actually quite liked it. I had a pool access room & I have no complaints about the room itself at all. I shared my pool with one other room next door. My air conditioning was very noisy while trying to sleep but to be fair to the hotel I didn’t mention this to them so didn’t give them the opportunity to fix it.

The downside… the hill. It really is very steep which does make life difficult. My room was at the very top of the hotel (Room 4305) so a buggy from reception was essential with bags etc. However, as I discovered to my horror, if it is raining or has recently been raining, (which in September is likely), they say that it is too slippery for the buggies, so you either walk or you’re stuck either up in your room or down in reception. When I checked out, it of course was raining so no buggies and I had no choice but to take my life in my hands and walk down with all my bags etc. If you have any mobility problems this hotel is definitely not for you.

The only other disappointment was that I was expecting an amazing view of the sea being so high up, but the hotel has been built facing into Kata town, so my room had no view of the sea at all. I think you would have a better view if you were on the other side of the hotel (the pools spread down the hill in the middle of 2 blocks of buildings, as you looked up the hill at the hotel from the lobby, my room was located on the right hand side).

I didn’t eat at the hotel so don’t know what the food was like, but I was disappointed that there wasn’t a hotel bar. As with most hotels and resorts the mini bar drinks are very pricey – I just bought my own in the supermarket and used the fridge in the room.

In conclusion, you will not get better than this for the price (approx £30 a night for a deluxe pool access room on agoda.com), and the rooms are good and layout of the pools quirky and even rather attractive, but ultimately the overall design of the hotel itself is rather poorly conceived and access can be a nightmare.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms lower down the hill and on the left hand side (as you look up the hill)

We stayed at the Sugar Palm Hillside for 13 nights and did so in a pool access room. It was fantastic. From the moment we were shown to the room it felt like we had hit the jackpot. Having been to Turkey and Egypt in the last couple of years I have felt that hotels advertised as 5/4 star in those countries would be lucky to get 2/3 stars in the UK. This hotel is advertised as 4 star and it would be without doubt at least that in the UK and a lot more expensive!

Pros

- Helpful and friendly staff. (Can't understand why so many people have said otherwise. There must be a lot of fussy old Victor Meldrew types around!)

- Beautiful rooms, really well designed. Great big shower and bath.

- Rooms cleaned every day and were kept immaculate.

- Pool access rooms, pretty self explanatory, however you generally have this to yourself most of the time despite it being shared with a few other rooms.

- The free wi-fi was great. I took my iPad with me and used it in conjunction with the wi-fi. Not the fastest connection but did the job.

- The mini apple PC was a nice touch connected up to the flat screen tv on the wall.

- There was a big fridge which was great. We took a taxi to the Tesco in Phuket (very different from UK Tesco) and bought lots of beers/drinks. It's nice to hop out of the pool straight into the room, grab a cold beer from the fridge and then hop back on into your private pool to enjoy the views over the town and the surrounding hills in the sunshine.

- Great views over the town and to the Big Buddha statue on top of the hill.

- Air conditioning that will keep the room freezing if you like. It is free along with the safety deposit box.

- Very close to the beach and also to the shops/bars. It's also very easy to find a taxi to go to Patong/Phuket Town etc.

- Main pool was usually quiet although I don't know what it would be like at peak season in December/January.

- Despite being close to everything, the hotel is very quiet and relaxing due to its location on the hillside.

Cons

Difficult because there aren't many.

- Possibly the hill to the hotel. Probably not idea for people requiring a wheelchair or those with bad backs etc. Not a problem though assuming your healthy. I feel other reviews make a bit of a meal of it. It's hardly Mt Everest.

- My girlfriend wasn't a fan of all of the lizards running around the walls and the gardens, especially when a couple got into the room. It's to be expected though if your going to a tropical country like Thailand. House keeping came with a nice big broom to "dispose" of the problem though so you won't need to get lizard guts on the bottom of your shoe.

Honestly, there are no other cons!

This hotel stands out in comparison to all of the other hotels in the area. If your going to Kata, this is a no brainer. Book up!

Recently stayed here for 7 nights, following advice from family. Stayed in the pool access rooms which is a must for couples wanting to enjoy some alone time! We were in the pool twice daily and there was never anyone else even in it! The pool access rooms have a pool outside your door which is shared with only one room beside you and two rooms on the opposite side of the 'U' shaped pool.

Staff were very helpful and responded to every extra request (copy of passports, keeping our bags, non-fat milk in the fridge for breakkie even!) Buffet breakfast was wonderful and consisted of eggs (cooked to your liking), salads, yogurt, cereals, chocolate milk, juices, croissants, pastries, all types of bread, fried rice, hot thai food, pancakes, waffes, fruit and that's about all I can remember.

The hotel is on a hill, which is the only difference between this hotel and Sugar Palm Kata. So if you want views, pick this hotel and if the steep hill deters you there is an alternative option for the same style hotel rooms.

Room was cleaned daily with freshtowels and beach towels, bottles of water and mini bar is very cheap (cheaper than 7/11!). Beds are massive (king size) and you have a tv in room with MTV and some other foxtel channels, and an apple computer in your room (free internet).

Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Would definitely pay the little bit extra for pool access!

This Hotel is on a hill but no worries about walking to your room as there are lifts and they are small enough hills to walk up.
5 mins walk to Kata beach and town. The infinity pools are great as well. We had breakfast included in the room rate and had a variety each morning.

Rooms are spacious with concrete floors and bathroom. All amenities required during our stay, only downside to the room we had, were ants along the headboard.
Staff are nice and friendly. Pre-book your taxi back to the airport as the Hotel only recommends their hotel transfers which is slightly more expensive.

Do not order room service - microwaved food and not so tasty. Gym is very small as well.

This is a 5 minute walk to the beach.

There was a bad smell in the toilet when we came - they room maintence did something and the smell stopped.

Rooms are large, clean and well equipped - minimalist in style but luxurious - robes, coffee, tea, umbrellas torchlight - everything you'd expect at a proper resort hotel.

The hotel will even arange bike rentals at 250THB a day.

Wi-Fi was alright. Pool was nice.

The property is up a steep hill but upon arrival you are dropped to the lobby and the staff carry your bags for you so during your stay it isn't that bad to walk up it a couple of times a day.....its short anyway and it leads right into kata town with immediate access to shops and restuarants and the beautiful beach.

The rooms are big and spacious and clean with an excellent bathroom and great ammenities like a flat screen tv and dvd player and the balcony/terrace is spacious too. The design is modern and minimal and this is what attracted us to the hotel as we are not fans of the old thai design. The staff were helpful and friendly and my only negative is that the pool bar has only one bar tender who wanders a bit, but we were there in low season and other that that everything else is great.

We booked this on a whim, looking for a bargain but also a great hotel and we were not disappointed - we hired a scooter for the week and drove all around, from kata to karon to patong and back and we were able to park the scooter on site. We did not eat in the restuarant so I cannto comment on that but straight accross from the hotel (on the hill) is an excellent local thai restuarant with a broad menu at bargain prices.

All round it was great - especially considering what we paid for it!!! woud reccommend it to couples and young people.

Room Tip: take the pool view room - its half the price of a pool access and the pool is literally accessible o...

This hotel has excellent location - 5 mins from kata beach and in the area in front of the hotel you can find the bus stop, tuk tuk station, and of course restaurants and massage parlours and some good shopping shops. Good!

Did not try the restaurant, Baby Palm though. Yep, the up-slope walk can be a bit physically taxing but hey, its great after a heavy meal:) Will return!
