We spent 5 days at the sugar palm hill had our own pool with our simply furnished but nice and clean room - we heard nothing but zircades and the water, the view was perfect, breakfast a treat and the beach in 10 min walk distance. The only price you have to pay: walk up the hill every day at least twice. Great value for money and a hidden treasure if you want to relax on Phuket

We loved this hotel. The rooms have a really minimal feel (don't know why people complain about the concerete floors it looks really good with the other decor) and are MASSIVE. There are heaps of pools to use and the staff are really helpful. Yes it is up a hill but once you work out the lifts it's a short climb up to your room and the views over the Kata strip/beach are worth it. Next time I would probably get a room a bit closer to the lobby or a pool access room as the pool area is really nice to relax in. Didn't get breakfast at the hotel as it seemed a bit pricey at 420 baht but there are lots of cafes near by. Booked on Agoda and it was about $60/night for a pool view room so really good value.

Room Tip: Get a pool access room.

I didnt have a choice in staying here. I have actually booked at their sister hotel down the hill. The staff messed up the reservation eventhough I have prepaid for the entire stay. Imagine 8pm and having to be "shipped" off to another location.

What greeted us was a rather cold interior. So unless you like the concrete, industrial look, I wouldn't recommend this place. I personally don't favor this style.

I have to admit that the room is HUGE, and the view is good.

Still don't think it is worth the money especially since we always had to climb up and down the steep slope to get to the shops below.

We stayed for 10 nights in Oct 2011. On arrival the bellboy watched us unload our car in the pouring rain while he stayed under cover holding an umbrella. We got saturated - not a good start to our holiday. The housekeeping staff were friendly but as for the other staff it was an effort for them to move around let alone acknowledge us. The breakfast, it was basic, but my biggest concern was the the large bowl of beaten eggs in an open dish sitting on the bench with nothing to keep it refrigerated, and breakfast started at 6.30am and finished after 10am. If they have a problem with refrigeration they should beat the eggs as needed. We stuck with fried eggs, they were cracked in front of you. My husband had a bowl of cereal and within 30 mins he got ill. He said the milk was at room temperature. Also, avoid the food in the bain-marie's it was barely warm. If you stick with toast and fried eggs you should have no problems anything more than that and you may find yourself spending the rest of your holiday in your room or worse, in hospital.

The rooms are large, but we were surprised to see polished concrete floors, including the bathroom walls, floor and shower recess. It is quite modern but very very sterile, no artwork in the room or flowers as displayed in the website. The TV reception was poor.

There was also an obvious lack of maintenance. The stainless steel handrails were rusting and the black tiles around the pools had a white residue build up on them and needed scrubbing. The shower walls and the glass door had a build up of soap scum as did the wash basin. The only positive thing about this place is the location and the room size.

Overall not a nice place to stay and the staff certainly do not make you feel welcome.

Sawadee krap!

Sugar Palm Grand Hillside exceeded all our expectations!

Things started a little bumpy as we were booked into a Grand Garden View room which was smaller than expected. We called the reception to log our complaint as we had originally booked with friends for a Grand Pool View room.

The following morning, we were relocated to a Grand Pool View room next to our friends, which was larger and nicer!

So lets get started:

Pros:
Excellent facilities
breakfast filled the void in your belly in the mornings and kept you going till the afternoon
The tour office inside the lobby offered excellent prices for tours, check them out.
Rooms were kept clean (cleaners even waited outside until you asked them to come in)
beautiful gardens
Pools were good for cooling down when it gets too hot!
The staff were excellent and helpful.
The balcony is an excellent place to chill in the morning and night!
Wifi and internet terminals for those who didn't bring a smartphone/laptop in the reception area.
You get to sit on a buggy and ride up the steep hills when you arrive!
Air conditioning worked surprisingly well.
Safe in the closest
crocks supplied
beach/pool towels supplies
nice toiletries
complimentary bottled water every day
awesome shower and huge bath tub

Cons:
Theres 3 buildings which form Sugar Palm Grand Hillside.
Building 1 is closest to the reception/food hall
Building 2 is mid way up the hill
Building 3 is furthest away, at the top it requires 2 elevators

Depending on which building you are in, the travel up and down may be too much for some people.

Its located on a steep hill,
Again, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone as the hotel name does state that its located on a hill.

Yes theres bugs, theres bugs everywhere in hot countries!

A lot of these cons can be overcome if you just embrace it as an experience.

The memories will stay with you forever which in my opinion is priceless!

Highly recommended!

we took this hotel because of the good reviews we found on trip advisor. In total we have to say that we were not satisfied with what we found there.
For us they have a real problem in service quality, the staff gives you the feeling you are not welcome at all. We had the feeling there is plenty of staff around, but just sitting there and waiting until their working time is over. As frequently visitors of thailand this was shocking for us.
The room was ok, not absolutly clean but ok. The bed linen is only changed if you really asked for (we found the bed dirty when we arrived, and had to ask twice) , the mirror stayed dirty the whole week we stayed there...
The pool area "could" be very nice if it would be maintained and clean well, which is unfortunately not the case (dirty and broken sunbed, dirty dishes, broken wood).
It is near the restaurant and shopping area, to the beach you have approx. 400m)
Breakfast is ok, nothing special- if you book a room there I would recommend to book it without breakfast as there are cafes around which serve better breakfast and have more friendly staff.

This is a nice hotel given its location and the price you pay to stay. The interior of the rooms is attractive to the eye and it has all the comfort facilities and stuff from a mac mini in each room to a most needed bottle opener. The location is a short walk from the beach, very manageable minus the steep slope to the lobby which may be a concern for elderly folks and children.

Service is nice with people paying attention to your needs.

The hotel offers land tour services and packages as well as taxi transfers but they are much much more costly if you book on just half a mile down the road.

Pool access rooms are nice provided you have nice neighbours are disruptive w children screaming as the pools are generally shared.

All in all, good stay and most enjoyable.
