We just spent 7 nights here, mid Nov 2013. We stayed in the 1br Apt, taking advantage of the 50% off offer via Tripadvisor, and would definitely recommend it to others. The resort was very clean, no mouldy smell some of the other (older) resorts have, and the service was very very good. The buffet breakfast is great, and the guys at the pool bar are awesome. The suite was excellent, and the Deluxe rooms looked really good as well, we would have been happy with one. The pools are great, basically the resort is A1. It's not a huge complex, but not too small either - we didn't feel cramped or that there were too many people around. Wifi was good, worked everywhere (which was a welcome break from most other hotels in the world...). Massages were great.

This is my first review on TA after many years of use and traveling to over 30 countries, primarily to clear the air around 'the hill'. Yep, there's a hill out front, and yes, it is quite steep, but given I'm the laziest guy around, was it an issue? Nope, not at all. In 7 days, we didn't walk up it once. How? Easy. Walk down into town/beach, walk to where you want to go (Kata/Karon/etc), then get a Tuk Tuk back for 200baht from pretty much anywhere around Kata/Karon. Worked a treat for us, no regrets whatsoever. If you can't afford $6 on a cab, you probably shouldn't be holidaying in Phuket.....

All in all, a really good resort in a great location, you will not be disappointed. Probably the best balance of quality/price I've seen in a while.

We got the airport transfer (recommended) and did the Phi Phi island tour from their tour desk. It was slightly more than the millions of other tours around, but it was definitely worth the extra as it is a modern speed boat with fewer people (10-15), thus you see more places and get there before all the other boats turn up (much better photos when you can actually see the water for the tourists!!). They also provide snorkels and flippers. Some of the boats we passed had 1000+ people on board :-o

This was pretty much the story of Phuket, look around before buying anything, then opt for the higher quality item. It'll probably be about 10-20% more, but will be worth 50% more in what you get for your money as 99% of people fight for the cheapest possible.

DO NOT hire a jetski, too many horror stories about those guys. Make sure you have an international licence if you want to hire a scooter. Take lots of photos of it before and after hiring one to fend off disputes. Wear a helmet.

Check out the night markets in Phuket Town on Sat/Sun nights. Worth it, just for the food.

Check out the artificial wave machine at the southern end of Kata beach, even just for a laugh as people fall off.

The Baan Rim Pa restaurant at the northern end of Patong beach (near the Novotel) has an amazing view for a sunset, get a seat out on the deck. It's not cheap though.

Definitely check out the Horn Grill Steakhouse (bottom end of Kata, just off the main street). The food is very very good, good value, and the service is eccentric to say the least :) A fav with the local expats.

And don't try to do too much. Hang out at the pool till 4pm, then walk into town and explore. Relax :)

Room Tip: We stayed in the 1br Apt (Kata Suite), taking advantage of the 50% off offer via Tripadvisor, and wo...

This is our 3rd time visiting Phuket but 1st time to the Kata beach area. We arrived around midnight and check in was very quick and easy with free juice & cold towels on arrival. I had requested a room on a higher floor and got a room on the 4 floor (5 floors in total)
The room was lovely with an enormous bed & even a pillow menu. Great bathroom (except for the bathrrom sink which doesnt hold the water) with amenities. We had booked on a TA offer so our stay included 2 free bottles of water and 2 cans of singha beer everyday. We mentioned we didnt drink beer so the maid made sure we got extra soft drinks instead. As it was my OH's birthday, the hotel had arranged for a birthday cake for us on arrival, a lovely touch.
Pool area's are lovely and very secluded. Always plenty of beds around no matter what time. Swim up bar nice touch. Free games room by pool with pool table and table football & darts.
Breakfast was good with good choice, only thing I didnt like was the juices, they didnt taste fresh and were very sweet.
As many have mentioned the hotel is at the top of a steep hill, it is only a 5 minute walk and gets easier each time. It as only 200 bhts for a tuktuk from kata beach.
There is a taxi mafia outside the hotel but they were very friendly, everytime we walked past they shouted "taxi, tuktu" and we just said no thank you and they were fine. We even used an external transfer company (Phuket shuttles) back to the airport and had no problems

You'll see from my contributions that I don't hold back from handing out advice but have held off from reviewing Avista until now because of an unpleasant experience I endured while staying there last year.

We stayed at Avista some 12/13 months ago and generally enjoyed our time there, decent food and great massages while decently situated at the end of Karon Beach. My issue was that I contracted food poisoning about 3 days in and it was definitely from something I ate in the hotel - I even know exactly what it was because I spat it out and got sick almost exactly 7 hours later. I didn't hold it against the hotel, it was something they had bought in and they were understanding and accepted responsibility at a time when our holiday was all but ruined because I was laid up in bed for 4 days. The general manager determined that we wouldn't have to pay for any more food (though I ate very little) and drinks were 25% off. They called in and paid for a doctor to see me and the subsequent cost of medication and we were also offered a good rate to stay at their sister hotel in Patong the following May (distinctly off season). It was our first trip to the far east though (to celebrate our 30th anniversary) and we had to cancel two prepaid boat trips to James Bond and Phi Phi islands. The first evening I was sick I had arranged a surprise (for my wife) renewing of our vows on a sunset beach, I got through it on autopilot but really don't remember much of either it or the subsequent days.

Reading back I think I am still angry about what happened, we spent alot of money for a dream holiday and half of it was ruined. I'm pragmatic enough to accept that it was an accident but we did lose out and even if they had scrubbed our bill, we still lost a holiday that was supposed to be our most special ever. Just writing this has proven strangely cathartic, one pushes negatives from one's mind but they linger.

Having read other reviews I can see that it hasn't happened again so maybe they changed supplier. The hotel is well run and the pools are decent, I'm afraid I can only award 3 stars though because of my experience.

Dear Nidgehammer,

Sawasdee Krab!
Greetings from Avista Phuket Resort and Spa!
It was indeed a pleasure to have you stay with us. Thank you for sparing the time to give us your detailed valuable feedback.
Kindly accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused to you during your stay with us in regard to the food poisoning. We did empathize with you falling sick during your stay with us and as you mentioned we took steps to make your stay a memorable one except offering you a complimentary stay at our newly opened Avista Hideaway Resort and Spa as you demanded. However, we did offer you the best possible off season rates as a special gesture. I remember explaining to you that it is difficult to determine the exact cause of food poisoning as you had taken the previous day’s meals outside the hotel. We were happy to note that you never lost confidence in our safety and hygiene standards of our kitchen and continue to enjoy meals in the resort.
We would like to thank you for complimenting the resort facilities.
We look forward to your next visit and assure you of our best services at all times.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Avista and would definitely stay again. We had a room on the top floor so had wonderful views over the ocean. Breakfast was substantial and the swim up Bar was definitely a high light. The Resort is on the top of the hill ( which is why there is the great views) so it is a hike up the resort to get home. However the Resort does offer a shuttle to Kata, Karon & Patong, so there is no need to walk if you don 't want to. Staff were very accommodating and always enquired how your day was as you walked through the Reception on the way back to your room.

Lovely welcome after a late flight, flower garland, very cold orange juice and ice cold towel. Love it as we were hot and sticky. Shown to our room to find a bed big enough for 4 to share !!! Bathroom was lovely the window into the bed room was a nice touch but not private to use the toilet so the blind was down all the time.the toiletries supplied were great smelling leave your own at home. Buffett breakfast was delicious not over crowded. Loads of fresh food all areas kept clean and tidy. My main memory of this resort was the smell of Jasmine as I walked to our room. While staying here try the spa the Thai massage was lovely. Staff very helpful and their English was good
Defo concider going again, the only negative was the steep hill to walk up if you went any where.
